We compare several statistical routines that may be used to calculate δ18Osw and SSS from paired coral Sr/Ca and δ18O measurements. Typically, the δ18Ocoral-SST relationship is estimated by linear regression of coral δ18O vs. SST. If this method is applied, evidence should be given that at a particular site SST and SSS do not co-vary. In the tropical oceans, SST and δ18Osw (SSS) often co-vary, and this will bias the estimate of the regression slope of δ18Ocoral-SST. Using a stochastic model, we show that covariance leads to a bias in the coefficients of the univariate regression equations. As the slope of the δ18Ocoral-SST relationship has known, we propose to insert this value for γ1 in the regression models. This requires that the constants of the regression equations are removed. To omit the constants, we propose to center the regression equations (i.e., to remove the mean values from the variables). The statistical error propagation is calculated to assess our ability to resolve past variations in δ18Osw (SSS). At Tahiti, we find that the combined analytical uncertainties of coral δ18O and Sr/Ca equal the amplitude of the seasonal cycle of δ18Osw (SSS). Therefore, we cannot resolve the seasonal cycle of SSS at Tahiti. At Timor, the error of reconstructed δ18Osw (SSS) is lower than the magnitude of seasonal variations of δ18Osw (SSS), and the seasonal cycle of δ18Osw (SSS) can be resolved.  相似文献

Abstract– We report an analysis of instrumental observations of a very bright fireball which terminated with a meteorite fall near the town of Jesenice in Slovenia on April 9, 2009, at 0h59m46s UT. The fireball designated EN090409 was recorded photographically and photoelectrically by two southern stations of the Czech part of the European Fireball Network (EN). Simultaneously, a part of the luminous trajectory was also captured by two all‐sky CCD systems and one video camera of the Slovenian meteor network. In addition to these optical recordings, the sonic booms produced by the Jesenice fireball were detected at 16 seismic stations located within 150 km of the trajectory. From all these records, we reconstructed the fireball’s atmospheric trajectory, basic geophysical data, the possible impact area, and the original heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid. Using a detailed fireball light curve, we modeled the atmospheric fragmentation of the meteoroid. Both the atmospheric behavior and the heliocentric orbit proved to be quite normal in comparison with other observed meteorite falls. The Jesenice orbit is markedly different from the P?íbram and Neuschwanstein orbital meteorite pair, which fell on similar dates (April 7, 1959, and April 6, 2002, respectively). Three meteorites with a total weight of 3.6 kg (until April 2010) were found in a high mountain area near the town of Jesenice. Mesoproterozoic (~ 1050 Ma; Stenian) zircon crystals from the Saranac Prospect, Bancroft, Ontario, contain up to ~ 1 wt.% U and ~ 0.15 wt.% Th and, correspondingly, they are for the most part extensively radiation-damaged (calculated total α-doses 2.3?35.3 × 1018/g). The crystals show textures of complex, intense chemical alteration that is attributed to multiple, low-T replacement events along fluid-controlled reaction fronts. Centers of crystals appear totally replaced; the primary zoning is virtually erased and the material has high porosity and numerous inclusions. Interior regions surrounding the central reworked areas still exhibit primary igneous-type zoning; in those regions the alteration emanates from fractures and then follows the more radiation-damaged growth zones. Altered areas are typically recognized by their high porosity, low BSE intensity, and deficient analytical totals. Those regions often have lost a significant fraction of their radiogenic Pb. They are in general somewhat depleted in Zr, Si, and U, and are notably enriched in Ca and Fe. Element maps reveal elevated concentrations of Al and Y within filled fractures. Our observations indicate that the fluid-driven ion exchange is mainly controlled by the accessibility of micro-areas with elevated levels of radiation damage to transporting fluids via “fast pathways”. Most importantly, there is apparent Zr?Si?U equilibrium between initially existing and newly formed zircon. The retention of U after the chemical replacement (94 ± 14% relative to the original U content in the respective zones) does not significantly fall below the retention of two major cations Zr (95 ± 4%) and Si (95 ± 2%). In spite of the partially extreme hydrothermal alteration overprinting, the original U zoning in the crystals is well preserved. These observations suggest that preferential chemical leaching of U from zircon is clearly not a general feature of this mineral. This in turn seems to question the general validity of hydrothermal experiments to low-T, fluid-driven alteration of zircon in geological environments. The observed apparent immobility of U may affect the interpretation of U?Pb discordance in zircon, and the performance assessment of this mineral as potential waste form for actinides.  相似文献

The complex microstructure of kelyphitic rims around garnet in lower crustal garnet granulite xenoliths from the Bakony–Balaton Highland Volcanic Field, Central Pannonian Basin has been studied in order to identify controls on garnet breakdown. Symplectites comprised of a vermicular intergrowth of submicron sized anorthite, orthopyroxene and spinel replace garnet at a sharp reaction front. Based on element distribution maps the transformation of garnet to symplectite is isochemical. Phase diagram calculations indicate that this reaction was induced by a pressure decrease and/or a temperature increase. In site-specific TEM foils prepared by focused ion beam technique and oriented parallel and perpendicular to the reaction front 200 nm wide rods of anorthite and 20 nm wide rods of spinel are identified. The rods are oriented approximately perpendicular to the replacement front and are embedded in an orthopyroxene matrix. The regular spacing of the symplectite phases along the reaction front suggests that their growth is controlled by diffusion. The kinetics of symplectite formation has been modelled based on irreversible thermodynamics. During interaction of the xenolith with the host basalt the microstructure and chemistry of the An–Opx–Spl symplectite was significantly modified and it was partially replaced by an olivine bearing symplectite. In contrast to primary symplectite formation, these processes were metasomatic in nature including addition of sodium, titanium and some trace elements from the basaltic melt and can clearly be discerned from the garnet breakdown. Based on these observations it is inferred that symplectite formation took place within the deep crust during the extension of the Pannonian Basin between 15 and 30 km depth at high temperature (850–1,050°C) prior to the volcanic transport to the surface.  相似文献

Trees form a significant part of the urban vegetation. Their meteorological and climatological effects at all scales in urban environments make them a flexible tool for creating a landscape oriented to the needs of an urban dweller. This study aims at quantifying the spatio-temporal patterns of canopy temperature (T C) and canopy-to-air temperature difference (?T C) in relation to meteorological conditions and tree-specific (physiological) and urban site-specific characteristics. We observed T C and ?T C of 67 urban trees (18 species) using a high-resolution thermal-infrared (TIR) camera and meteorological measurements in the city of Berlin, Germany. TIR images were recorded at 1-min intervals over a period of 2?months from 1st July to 31st August 2010. The results showed that ?T C depends on tree species, leaf size and fraction of impervious surfaces. Average canopy temperature was nearly equal to air temperature. Species-specific maximum ?T C varied between 1.9?±?0.3?K (Populus nigra), 2.9?±?0.3?K (Quercus robur), 3.2?±?0.5?K (Fagus sylvatica), 3.9?±?1.0?K (Platanus acerifolia), 4.6?±?0.2?K (Acer pseudoplatanus), 5.0?±?0.5?K (A. platanoides) and 5.6?±?1.1?K (A. campestre). We analysed ?T C for a hot and dry period (A) and a warm and wet period (B). The range of species-specific ?T C at noon was nearly equal, i.e. 4.4?K for period A and 4.2?K for period B. Trees surrounded by high fraction of impervious surfaces showed consistently higher ?T C. Knowledge of species-specific canopy temperature and the impacts of urban structures are essential in order to optimise the benefits from trees in cities. However, comprehensive evaluation and optimisation should take the full range of climatological effects into account.  相似文献

The combination of the O-shell theory of Heymann and Dziczkaniec and the supernova theory of Woosley and Howard clearly identifies the astrophysical sites for the formation of the anomalous light Xe component in carbonaceous chondrites. These sites are the O- and Ne-shells, and possibly C-shell of a massive star. Most of the 124Xe and 126Xe are formed in the O-shell during hydrostatic core silicon-burning, when a seed of heavy nuclei is exposed to an effective temperature near T9 = 2.0. 128Xe is formed via 128Ba in the O-shell, but the amounts appear too small to satisfy the deduced 128Xe/124Xe and 128Xe/126Xe yield ratios from the chondrites. However, substantial amounts of 128Xe can be formed in the adjacent Ne- and C-shells during the explosion. The formation of 128Ba in the O-shell would increase if the (γ, α) photodisintegration rate in 128Ba is actually smaller than calculated by Woosley and Howard. Lewis et al. have proposed that the anomalous light Xe component is mass-fractionated normal Xe. It is in this sense that the process of stellar nucleosynthesis of the present paper mimicks mass-fractionation.  相似文献
