Recent field investigations have shown that differential mixing causes a significant density driven exchange between the two eastern basins of Lake Lucerne, Gersauersee and Urnersee. The long term vertical mixing characteristics during the winter mixing period and the influence of the resulting exchange flow on water quality are examined through the analysis of ten years (1964 to 1974) of monthly limnological data. Vertical homogenization of the state variables (temperature, electric conductivity and density) occurred on average once every two years in Urnersee, but not once in Gersauersee where the ten year average winter mixed-layer depth extended to 120 m. In Urnersee intense mixing was evident over the whole water column for every year. In contrast intense mixing in the deeper layers of Gersauersee occurred approximately once every four years. A three layer model shows that theT/20 signature of the Gersauersee intermediate water correlates best with the Urnersee deep water confirming the regular occurrence of a density driven exchange. For the lower layers the oxygen consumption rate in Urnersee was approximately twice that for Gersauersee. It appears the exchange flow can act either as a source or sink for the oxygen balance of Urnersee deep water. The larger rate in Urnersee hypolimnion might also be associated with the larger sediment input to this system. Density driven exchange resulting from differential mixing is probably an important contribution to the vertical water replenishment in many lakes. 相似文献
In the olivine crystal structure, cations are distributed over two inequivalent octahedral sites, M1 and M2. Kinetics of cation
exchange between the two octahedral sites in (Co0.1Mg0.9)2SiO4 single crystal have been studied in the temperature range from 600 to 800°C by monitoring the time evolution of the absorbance
of Co2+ ions in M1 or M2 sites using optical spectroscopy after rapid temperature jumps. It was found from such temperature-jump
induced relaxation experiments that with increasing temperature the absorbance of Co2+ ions in the M1 site decreases while that in the M2 site increases. This indicates a tendency of Co2+ cations to populate the M2 site with increasing temperatures and vice versa. The experimental relaxation data can be modeled
using a triple exponential equation based on theoretical analysis. Activation energies of 221 ± 4 and 213 ± 10 kJ/mol were
derived from relaxation experiments on the M2 site and M1 site, respectively, for the cation exchange processes in (Co0.1Mg0.9)2SiO4 olivine. Implications for cation diffusion at low temperatures are discussed. 相似文献
For the Tortonian, Steppuhn et al. [Steppuhn, A., Micheels, A., Geiger, G., Mosbrugger, V., 2006. Reconstructing the Late Miocene climate and oceanic heat flux using the AGCM ECHAM4 coupled to a mixed-layer ocean model with adjusted flux correction. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423] perform a model simulation which considers a generally lower palaeorography, a weaker ocean heat transport and an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 353 ppm. The Tortonian simulation of Steppuhn et al. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423] demonstrates some realistic trends: the high latitudes are warmer than today and the meridional temperature gradient is reduced. However, the Tortonian run also indicates some insufficiencies such as too cool mid-latitudes which can be due to an underestimated pCO2 in the atmosphere. As a sensitivity study, we perform a further model experiment for which we additionally increase the atmospheric carbon dioxide (700 ppm). According to this CO2 sensitivity experiment, we find a global warming and a globally more intense water cycle as compared to the previous Tortonian run. Particularly the high latitudes are warmer in the Tortonian CO2 sensitivity run which leads to a lower amount of Arctic sea ice and a reduced equator-to-pole temperature difference. Our Tortonian CO2 sensitivity study basically agrees with results from recent climate model experiments which consider an increase of CO2 during the next century (e.g. [Cubasch, U., Meehl, G.A., Boer, G.J., Stouffer, R.J., Dix, M., Noda, A., Senior, C.A., Raper, S., Yap, K.S., 2001. Projections of Future Climate Change. In: Houghton, J.T., Y. Ding, D.J. Griggs, M. Noguer, P.J. van der Linden, X. Dai, K. Maskell, C.A. Johnson (eds.), Climate Change 2001: The Scientific Basis. Contribution of Working Group I to the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 525–582]) suggesting that the climatic response on a higher atmospheric CO2 concentration is almost independent from the different settings of boundary conditions (Tortonian versus today). To validate the Tortonian model simulations, we perform a quantitative comparison with terrestrial proxy data. This comparison demonstrates that the Tortonian CO2 sensitivity experiment tends to be more realistic than the previous Tortonian simulation by Steppuhn et al. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423]. However, a high carbon dioxide concentration of 700 ppm is questionable for the Late Miocene, and it cannot explain shortcomings of our Tortonian run with ‘normal’ CO2. In order to fully understand the Late Miocene climate, further model experiments should also consider the palaeovegetation. 相似文献
Segmentation along convergent margins controls earthquake magnitude and location, but the physical causes of segment boundaries, and their impact on earthquake rupture dynamics, are still poorly understood. One aspect of the 2004 and 2005 great Sumatra–Andaman earthquakes is their abrupt termination along a common boundary. This has led to speculation on the nature of the boundary, its origin and why it was not breached.
For the first time the boundary has been imaged and, with newly acquired marine geophysical data, we demonstrate that a ridge on the subducting Indo-Australian oceanic crust may exert a control on margin segmentation. This suggests a lower plate influence on margin structure, particularly its segmentation. The ridge is masked by the sedimentary cover in the trench. Its most likely trend is NNE–SSW. It is interpreted as a fracture zone on the subducting oceanic plate. A ramp or tear along the eastern flank of the subducting fracture zone beneath Simeulue Island may be considered as an intensification factor in terms of rupture propagation barrier. 相似文献
A group of low‐angle normal faults developed in banded gabbro of Moa Ophiolite, Cuba. The dark gabbro was cut into puddings by several normal faults, while light gabbro was just swelling in layer thickness. In Hongliuhe ophiolite at eastern segment of South Tien Shan Suture Zone in China, the extensional deformation concentrates on fine cumulus gabbro which is typically mylonitized. Abundant structural features were discovered in HLH ophiolite such as S‐C foliation, C’ foliation, extensional crenulation cleavage, small toughness normal fault, low‐angle normal faults and high‐angle normal faults. According to the above tectonic phenomenon from the ophiolite belts in Cuba and China, we will get the conclusion: the maximum principal compressive stress (b1) is vertical to cumulus bedding, and the maximum tensile stress (b3) is paralleling to cumulus bedding. Considering of the above evidence, the extensional tectonic event should developed at mid‐ocean ridge. Due to seafloor spreading, the maximum tensile stress is paralleling to cumulus layer, and extensional tectonic is kept in cumulus gabbro. In this way, normal faults developed in dark gabbro, while brittle‐ductile extensional developed in light gabbro. A large number of domes, folds paralleling to ocean ridge and detachment faults represented by low angle normal fault were discovered near ocean ridge in Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. In this way, materials from deep oceanic lithosphere (e.g. gabbro, mantle peridotite) outcrop at the crust surface of ocean basin. The above evidences from China and Cuba are consistent with extensional tectonic and metamorphic core complex from slowly and super‐slowly spreading Indian Ocean and Atlantic Oceanic lithosphere based on ODP. Therefore, extensional deformation in the ophiolite belt is of significant meaning for clarifying the formation process and mechanism of ancient oceanic basin. 相似文献
A new olivine reference material – MongOL Sh11‐2 – for in situ analysis has been prepared from the central portion of a large (20 × 20 × 10 cm) mantle peridotite xenolith from a ~ 0.5 My old basaltic breccia at Shavaryn‐Tsaram, Tariat region, central Mongolia. The xenolith is a fertile mantle lherzolite with minimal signs of alteration. Approximately 10 g of 0.5–2 mm gem quality olivine fragments were separated under binocular microscope and analysed by EPMA, LA‐ICP‐MS, SIMS and bulk analytical methods (ID‐ICP‐MS for Mg and Fe, XRF, ICP‐MS) for major, minor and trace elements at six institutions world‐wide. The results show that the olivine fragments are sufficiently homogeneous with respect to major (Mg, Fe, Si), minor and trace elements. Significant inhomogeneity was revealed only for phosphorus (homogeneity index of 12.4), whereas Li, Na, Al, Sc, Ti and Cr show minor inhomogeneity (homogeneity index of 1–2). The presence of some mineral and fluid‐melt micro‐inclusions may be responsible for the inconsistency in mass fractions obtained by in situ and bulk analytical methods for Al, Cu, Sr, Zr, Ga, Dy and Ho. Here we report reference and information values for twenty‐seven major, minor and trace elements. 相似文献
A database of the electron temperature (Te) comprising of most of the available LEO satellite measurements is used for studying the solar activity variations of Te. The Te data are grouped for two levels of solar activity (low LSA and high HSA), five altitude ranges between 350 and 2000 km, and day and night. By fitting a theoretical expression to the Te values we obtain variation of Te along magnetic field lines and heat flux for LSA and HSA. We have found that Te increases with increase in solar activity at low and mid-latitudes during nighttime at all altitudes studied. During daytime the Te response to solar activity depends on latitude, altitude, and season. This analysis shows existence of anti-correlation between Te and solar activity at mid-latitudes below 700 km during the equinox and winter day hours. Heat fluxes show small latitudinal dependence for daytime but substantial for nighttime. 相似文献
Erosion due to waves is an important and actual problem for most coastal areas of the North Sea. The objective of this study
was to estimate the impact of wave action on the coastline of Sylt Island. From a 2-year time series (November 1999 to October
2001) of hydrological and wave parameters generated with a coupled wave–current modelling system, a period comprising storm
‘Anatol’ (3–4 December 1999) is used to investigate the effects of waves on currents and water levels and the input of wave
energy into the coastline. The wave-induced stress causes an increase of the current velocity of 1 m/s over sand and an additional
drift along the coast of about 20 cm/s. This produces a water level increase of more than 20 cm in parts of the tidal basin.
The model system also calculates the wave energy input into the coastline. Scenario runs for December 1999 with a water level
increase of 50 cm and wind velocity increased by 10% show that the input of the wave energy into the west coast of Sylt Island
increases by 30% compared to present conditions. With regard to the forecasted near-future (Woth et al., Ocean Dyn 56:3–15,
2006) increase of strong storm surges, the scenario results indicate an increased risk of coastal erosion in the surf zone of
Sylt Island. 相似文献
