Granular piles are frequently used as a method of improving soft grounds as they provide increased bearing capacity and reduce foundation settlements. However, in very soft clayey soils, they may not derive their load-carrying capacity by low confining pressure provided by the surrounding soil. In such circumstances, granular piles may be reinforced with suitable geosynthetic to increase its load-carrying capacity and to reduce excessive bulging. In this study, the performance of small group of geosynthetic-reinforced granular piles (GRGPs) is examined in terms of load-carrying capacity, settlement, and modulus by laboratory model tests. The parameters investigated include modulus of reinforcement material, area replacement ratio (ARR) based on the column diameter and reinforcement length. The results indicated that increasing the modulus of the reinforcement and the ARR based on the column diameter enhances the overall performance of the GRGP group. It was also observed that reinforcement on top portion of the granular pile is sufficient to substantially increase the load-carrying capacity of granular pile group.  相似文献

The paper reports the estimation of surface soil moisture (SM) using surface wetness Index (SWI) retrieved from multi-frequency passive microwave radiometer. A change detection algorithm was followed which transforms SWI variations in to SM variations using per pixel soil property of field capacity and air-dry status. Estimated soil moisture was compared with the point measurements made at the Monmouth and De Kalb sites of Illinois (USA) for the validation. Sensitivity of the SWI to the variations of rainfall at various vegetation fractions is analyzed. RMS error of volumetric soil moisture is found to be in the range of 6.35 to 8.85 %. The method works well up to the vegetation fraction of 40 %. Applications of the technique are demonstrated by the spatio-temporal analysis of estimated soil moisture maps for India. Characteristic increase in soil moisture was observed with the progress of monsoon from 25 to 32 week in northern India and 46 to 52 week in the costal parts of Tamil Nadu in south.  相似文献

A non-linear three-dimensional finite element procedur is developed and applied for the analysis of pile group foundations. The numerical procedure allows for elastic, non-linear elastic and elastic-plastic hardening behaviour of sand. In order to include the interaction effects involving relative slip and debonding, the thin-layer interface element is used. The predictions for displacements and loads obtained from the numerical procedure are compared with laboratory model test results of a pile group. Displacements, stresses and forces distribution in various components of the pile group are also examined. Furthermore, the effects of the non-linear soil response and relative motions at the interface are indentified and discussed.  相似文献

A novel data logger has been designed and tested for logging data from a satellite navigator, magnetometer, and a deep-sea echosounder. The logger exploits the interrupt structure of an in-house 8085 single-board computer (SBC) to service requests from the satellite navigator and real-time clock chip. The real-time clock interrupt forces the 8085 central processing unit (CPU) to fetch data from the magnetometer and echosounder at a user-selected interval. At present, up to four days of data can be stored on a single DC-100 tape cartridge. All recorded data are displayed on a dumb CRT terminal. The data-logging software is written in PLM/85-a higher level language for the 8085 microprocessor.  相似文献

The idea of using a thin solid element, called a thin-layer element, in soil-structure interaction and rock joints is proposed. A special constitutive model is used and various deformation modes such as no slip, slip, debonding and rebonding are incorporated. The shear stiffness is found from special laboratory tests and the normal stiffness is assumed to be composed of participation of the thin-layer element and the adjoining solid elements. A parametric study shows that the thickness of the thin-layer element can be such that the ratio of thickness to (mean) dimension of the adjacent element is in the range of 0.01 to 0.1. A number of simple and practical problems are solved to illustrate the success of the thin-layer element for soil-structure interaction problems.  相似文献

Work at Goddard is preséntly being carried out in three major areas of gamma-ray burst research: (1) A pair of simultaneously operating 0.8-m2 burst detectors were successfully balloon-borne at locations 800 miles apart on 9 May, 1975, each to atmospheric depths of 3 to 4 g cm–2, for a 20-h period of coincident data coverage. This experiment investigates the size spectrum of bursts in the 10–7 to 10–6 erg cm–2 size region where dozens of events per day are expected on a –1.5 index integral power-law extrapolation. Considerable separation in latitude was used to avoid possible atmospheric and auroral secondary effects. Its results are not yet available. This experiment is the sequel to a single balloon flight in May 1974, in which candidate events were found to fit the –1.5 spectral extrapolation, indicating the need for positive event identification. (2) A deep-space burst detector, the first spacecraft instrument built specifically for gamma-ray burst studies, was recently successfully integrated into the Helios-B space probe. Its use at distances of up to 2 AU will make possible the first high-resolution directional study of gamma-ray burst source locations. Similar modifications to several other space vehicles are also being prepared. (3) Our gamma-ray instrument on the IMP-7 satellite is presently the most sensitive burst detector still operating in orbit. Its results have shown that all measured event-average energy spectra are consistent with being alike. Using this characteristic spectrum to select IMP-7 candidate events of smaller size than those detected using other spacecraft in coincidence, a size spectrum is constructed which fits the –1.5 index power law down to 2.5×10–5 erg cm–2 per event, at an occurrence rate of about once per month.Paper presented at the COSPAR Symposium on Fast Transients in X-and Gamma-Rays, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 29–31 May, 1975.  相似文献

The Goddard program of gamma-ray burst studies is briefly reviewed. The past results, present status and future expectations are outlined regarding our endeavors using experiments on balloons, IMP-6 and IMP-7, OGO-3, ISEE-1 and ISEE-3, Helios-2, Solar Maximum Mission, the Einstein Observatory, Solar Polar and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and with the interplanetary gamma-ray burst networks, to which some of these spacecraft sensors contribute.
