A field experiment consisting of geophysical logging and tracer testing was conducted in a single well that penetrated a sand-and-gravel aquifer at the U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology research site on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Geophysical logs and flowmeter/pumping measurements were obtained to estimate vertical profiles of porosity ϕ, hydraulic conductivity K, temperature, and bulk electrical conductivity under background, freshwater conditions. Saline-tracer fluid was then injected into the well for 2 h and its radial migration into the surrounding deposits was monitored by recording an electromagnetic-induction log every 10 min. The field data are analyzed and interpreted primarily through the use of Archie's (1942) law to investigate the role of topological factors such as pore geometry and connectivity, and grain size and packing configuration in regulating fluid flow through these coarse-grained materials. The logs reveal no significant correlation between K and ϕ, and imply that groundwater models that link these two properties may not be useful at this site. Rather, it is the distribution and connectivity of the fluid phase as defined by formation factor F, cementation index m, and tortuosity α that primarily control the hydraulic conductivity. Results show that F correlates well with K, thereby indicating that induction logs provide qualitative information on the distribution of hydraulic conductivity. A comparison of α, which incorporates porosity data, with K produces only a slightly better correlation and further emphasizes the weak influence of the bulk value of ϕ on K. 相似文献

Saturation index with respect to calcite (SIc) and equilibrium CO2 partial pressure are important parameters to study groundwater in limestone aquifers. Aside from their use in time series, CO2 and SIc are used to estimate the baseline of CO2 in the vadose zone. The objective of this paper is to present conceptual examples on the use of the CO2–SIc relationship to have new information from usual parameters. Case study was considered as an example of use from Cussac site, a limestone aquifer in southwest of France. Abstract This study, using a climate change scenario generated by the Canadian Climate Centre (CCC) general circulation model (GCM) examines the impacts of such a climate change on agriculture in southern Quebec. Using a crop model from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), yield responses of a variety of cereals, legumes, oleaginous and special crops to climate change are analysed and discussed. Results show that under the 2 × CO2 climate scenario the growing season would be longer and accumulation of corn heat units and growing degree days would be more important than under actual climate (1961–1990). One of the more important results of this study is that, on the one hand yield of C3 cereals would be lower and that of C4 cereals higher in most agricultural regions. On the other hand, the direct fertilisation effect of increased CO2 is not considered. Abstract— Fifty-eight lunar rocks have been analysed by prompt gamma neutron activation for B, Gd and Sm. The data were interpreted together with published analyses for Li and other elements. The behaviour of B in lunar rocks is virtually identical to that of Sm, Gd, Li and the other incompatible LIL (Large Ion Lithophile) and HFS (High Field Strength) elements, collectively known as the KREEP component. To a first approximation, the distribution of B concentrations in all lunar rocks can be described as a two-component mixture of KREEP, with ~32 ppm, and B-free mare basalts and anorthositic rocks. The lunar B abundance, estimated from correlations with other KREEP elements, is ~0.14 ppm. Alpha-track images of the analysed lunar rocks were made from thin sections specially prepared to avoid contamination from terrestrial B. They provided surprising evidence that the distributions of B and Li within individual rocks fall into four categories: (1) substitution in mineral structures; (2) in irregular minute particles, disseminated through the rock with no apparent connection with mineralogy; (3) as aggregate properties of rock fragments, acquired prior to assembly in a breccia; and, (4) as aggregate properties of a breccia matrix, distinct from unaffected clasts. Only category (1) is encountered in terrestrial rocks. Categories (2), (3) and (4) become progressively more important as the abundance of KREEP components increases, and it is concluded that the alpha-track images probably show the localisation of not only B and Li but all the KREEP elements. In terrestrial rocks, such textures could be understood in terms of successive episodes of permeation by solutions followed by brecciation, then cementation. It is difficult to adapt such a mechanism to a dry Moon, with brecciation imposed by impact melting. The linear correlation of lunar B and Gd contrasts strongly with the relationship seen in terrestrial rocks, where the presence of water creates a terrestrial B cycle quite different from that of Gd and other lunar incompatible elements. 相似文献

The Palaeoproterozoic units of Terre Adélie show two types of structural domains associated with HT–LP metamorphic conditions: domes and NS–N340° striking vertical shear zones. Shear zones reflect dextral transpressive motions. Domes reflect sub-vertical shortening and principal stretching subparallel to shear zones. They could partly result from longitudinal flow coeval with transpression. Deformations are comparable to those described along the eastern and western boundaries of the Archean Gawler Craton (South-East Australia), which underlines the continuity between these two areas before opening of the Austral Ocean. In recent years a number of double-humped supernovae (SNe) have been discovered. This is a feature predicted by the dual-shock Quark-Nova (QN) model where an SN explosion is followed (a few days to a few weeks later) by a QN explo- sion. SN 2009ip and SN 2010mc are the best observed examples of double-humped SNe. Here, we show that the dual-shock QN model naturally explains their light curves including the late time emission, which we attribute to the interaction between the mixed SN and QN ejecta and the surrounding circumstellar matter. Our model applies to any star (O-stars, luminous blue variables, Wolf-Rayet stars, etc.) provided that the mass involved in the SN explosion is ~ 20 Mo which provides good conditions for forming a QN. 相似文献

GETEMME (Gravity, Einstein??s Theory, and Exploration of the Martian Moons?? Environment), a mission which is being proposed in ESA??s Cosmic Vision program, shall be launched for Mars on a Soyuz Fregat in 2020. The spacecraft will initially rendezvous with Phobos and Deimos in order to carry out a comprehensive mapping and characterization of the two satellites and to deploy passive Laser retro-reflectors on their surfaces. In the second stage of the mission, the spacecraft will be transferred into a lower 1500-km Mars orbit, to carry out routine Laser range measurements to the reflectors on Phobos and Deimos. Also, asynchronous two-way Laser ranging measurements between the spacecraft and stations of the ILRS (International Laser Ranging Service) on Earth are foreseen. An onboard accelerometer will ensure a high accuracy for the spacecraft orbit determination. The inversion of all range and accelerometer data will allow us to determine or improve dramatically on a host of dynamic parameters of the Martian satellite system. From the complex motion and rotation of Phobos and Deimos we will obtain clues on internal structures and the origins of the satellites. Also, crucial data on the time-varying gravity field of Mars related to climate variation and internal structure will be obtained. Ranging measurements will also be essential to improve on several parameters in fundamental physics, such as the Post-Newtonian parameter ?? as well as time-rate changes of the gravitational constant and the Lense-Thirring effect.
