Spherically symmetric transonic accretion of a fractal medium has been studied in both the stationary and the dynamic regimes. The stationary transonic solution is greatly sensitive to infinitesimal deviations in the outer boundary condition, but the flow becomes transonic and stable when its evolution is followed through time. The evolution towards transonicity is more pronounced for a fractal medium than it is for a continuum, and in the former case the static sonic condition is met on relatively larger length scales. The dynamic approach also shows that there is a remarkable closeness between an equation of motion for a perturbation in the flow, and the metric of an analogue acoustic black hole. The stationary inflow solutions of a fractal medium are as much stable under the influence of linearized perturbations as they are for the fluid continuum. 相似文献

The decrease and degradation of the tropical forests affect not only the production of timber but also the global environment in a large scale. The ability of soil to sustain and its supply of nutrients to a growing forest are controlled by a complex of biogeochemical processes. The purpose of the present study aims to assess the degraded forest fringe areas, to promote plantations of various types and to evaluate their impacts on the soil nutrients and carbon content accumulation. The soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient content were evaluated and compared between plantations of mixed native species (MNS), some native tree species as Shorea robusta, Dalbergia sissoo, Dendrocalamus spp., certain agro‐forestry species and some exotic varieties. The impacts of the plantations on the SOC and the nutrients were firstly analyzed through comprehensive chemical analyses and the results were compared with the soil samples collected prior to plantation forestry. Significant changes were observed in SOC content, in nutrients, and in amounts of exchangeable cations. Soil carbon levels were highest under the MNS, Dendrocalamus and Tectona grandis stands and lowest under D. sissoo and Terminalia arjuna. Total N showed highest levels under Dendrocalamus and Pongamia pinnata and significantly higher in stands of native species; lowest total N level was observed in D. sissoo plantations. The C/N ratios of the soil varied between 9.2 and 13.5 among the exchangeable cations. Ca2+ recorded the maximum levels and Na+ showed the lowest levels. 相似文献

The application of SAR data is a proven technology in geological studies but very few accounts are available in India, which
can evaluate and demonstrate the utility of microwave signatures as an important tool for geological mapping. In this connection,
the significance of polarization is an important parameter in enhancing geological elements. Present study reveals that the
simple polarization composite prepared from different polarization channels can significantly aid the delineation of geological
features as demonstrated from the Proterozoic metasedimentary sequences of Kurnool Group. The polarization colour composites
reveal that different sedimentary units can be differentiated on the basis of variable back scattering return in different
polarization channel. Further geological structures of regional importance can also be delineated in these colour composite
images. Comparative analysis of different composite images with published geological maps, illustrates the capabilities of

The geomorphic and stratigraphic history of six coastal embayments has been studied in the vicinity of Newcastle, New South Wales (N.S.W.), Australia, in order to determine modes of deposition, and the degree to which marine and estuarine deposits can be correlated and dated. Each embayment possesses its own distinctive suite of landforms ranging from those dominated by coastal dunes to those in which beach ridges occur. In four of the bays dual sand barriers, comprising an Inner Barrier and an Outer Barrier, provide the framework for correlation between embayments. Six stages are recognized in the deposition of late Quaternary sediments in this area: (i) Pre-Last Interglacial, involving accumulation of separate composite units consisting of estuarine clays and transgressive dune complexes; (ii) Last Interglacial stage during which Inner Barriers were formed; (iii) Last Glacial reworking of barrier and dune sands by westerly winds; (iv) Postglacial Marine Transgression during which the Outer Barriers were initiated; (v) Mid-Holocene stage following cessation of sea-level rise ca. 6000–6500 yr B.P. on this coast, and involving progradation of Outer Barriers in some embayments; and (vi) Late Holocene episodic eolian reworking of dune complexes and Outer Barriers. The relatively high wave and wind energy as well as the tectonic setting of the central N.S.W. coast results in somewhat different geomorphic histories from barrier-island coasts in North America and Europe. 相似文献

The center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) has developed a radar data assimilation system. The system consists
of several principal components: (1) a program that quality-controls and remaps (or super-ob) radar data to the analysis grid,
(2) a Bratseth analysis method (ADAS), or a 3DVAR method for analyzing all the data except for clouds and precipitation, (3)
a cloud and hydrometer analysis package that applies diabetic adjustments to the temperature field, and (4) a non-hydrostatic
forecast model named ARPS. In this study, the system is applied to a small cyclone named OGNI, which formed over Bay of Bengal,
India during the last week of October 2006. Three experiments are carried out to test the impact of the radar data from Chennai,
India. These experiments include (1) using NCEP GFS data to initialize the ARPS model (2) using initial and boundary condition
produced from the ADAS and the cloud analysis, (3) using initial and boundary condition produced from the 3DVAR and cloud
analysis. The inter-comparison of results reveals that the experiment with the 3DVAR assimilation technique produces more
realistic forecast to capture the genesis, structure, and northward movement of the cyclone in the short-range time scale. 相似文献

Previous studies have suggested the presence of large-scale flow structures in gravel-bed rivers. These structures are pictured as intermittent high-speed wedges separated by regions of lower velocity. However, the characteristics of these structures have not been examined in detail through either visualisation techniques or detailed field measurements. This paper confirms the presence of large-scale flow structures in gravel bed rivers, pictures their sequence and patterns and characterises their mean and individual properties. The analysis relies on a new technique for displaying velocity fluctuations in a space–time matrix that allows one to see the structures as they pass an array of current meters. Streamwise and vertical velocities were measured simultaneously with an array of three electromagnetic current meters. The sampling frequency was 20 Hz. Five velocity profiles of up to 13 1-min series of measurements and one profile of three 20-min measurements were sampled. These data suggest the presence of large wedges of faster fluid joined by regions of slower fluid. Space–time correlation analysis confirmed the presence of vertical coherence of the flow. The average angle of the front of the wedges is 36°. Although individual structures are variable in size and shape, a new detection technique using all three velocity signals simultaneously showed that their average frequency is nine events per minute and their duration is more than 2 s. The high-speed wedges display a complex organisation and do not show a preferred sequence of events as was postulated by previous studies. Because of their duration and size, these high-speed wedges are likely to play a major role in bedload sediment transport. 相似文献
