Sedimentological analyses of 289 years (AD 1718-2006) of varved sediment from Shadow Bay, southwest Alaska, were used to investigate hydroclimate variability during and prior to the instrumental period. Varve thicknesses relate most strongly to total annual discharge (r2 = 0.75, n = 43, p < 0.0001). Maximum annual grain size depends most strongly on maximum spring daily discharge (r2 = 0.63, n = 43, p < 0.0001) and maximum annual daily discharge (r2 = 0.61, n = 43, p < 0.0001), while varve thickness is poorly correlated with maximum annual grain size (r2 = 0.004, n = 287, p = 0.33). Relations between varve thickness and annual climate variables (temperature, precipitation, North Pacific (NP) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) indices) are insignificant. On multidecadal timescales, however, regime shifts in varve thickness and total annual discharge coincide with shifts in NP and PDO indices. Periods with increased varve thickness and total annual discharge were associated with warm PDO phases and a strengthened Aleutian Low. The varve-inferred record of PDO suggests that any periodicity in the PDO varied over time, and that the early 19th century marked a transition to a more frequent or detectable shifts.  相似文献

Whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr and δ18O analyses of volcanic rocks and 3He/4He analyses of sulphides and sulphates from mineralized rocks on Wetar, Indonesia indicate a variable contribution of assimilated crustal material or sediment sourced from the subducted Australian craton to the south. These new data support the idea of progressive source contamination with precisely dated events showing that Wetar Island hosts the most extreme examples of crustal assimilation in the region. The increased continental contamination occurs during the Pliocene (Zanclian to Piacenzian) during distinct magmatic events between 5 and 4 Ma, and at 2.4 Ma when 87Sr/86Sr ratios in unaltered lavas, with whole-rock δ18O values between 5.7 and 9.6‰, increase from 0.707484 to extreme radiogenic values of 0.711656.The earlier of these magmatic events is important in the generation of the hydrothermal systems responsible for the mineralization recorded on Wetar. Samples from this yield radiogenic 3He/4He ratios between 0.5 and 1.4 R/RA, similar to the data from volcanic rocks on nearby Romang. The later magmatic event coincides with the arrival of the Australian Continental Margin at the subduction zone along the Banda arc. Progressive incorporation of continental-sourced components into the source region below the Wetar Island edifice coincides with the formation of gold-rich volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits hosted within the contaminated volcanic pile.  相似文献

To improve our knowledge about the geochemical and environmental aftermath of Neoproterozoic global glaciations, we analyzed stable isotopes (δ13C, δ18O, δ34S) and elemental concentrations (Ca, Mg, S, Sr, Fe, and Mn) of the ~ 10-m-thick Zhamoketi cap dolostone atop the Tereeken diamictite in the Quruqtagh area, eastern Chinese Tianshan. Available chemostratigraphic data suggest that the Tereeken diamictite is probably equivalent to the Marinoan glaciation. Our new data indicate that organic and carbonate carbon isotopes of the Zhamoketi cap dolostone show little stratigraphic variations, averaging ? 28.2‰ and ? 4.6‰, respectively. In contrast, sulfur isotopes show significant stratigraphic variations. Carbonate associated sulfate (CAS) abundance decreases rapidly in the basal cap dolostone and δ34SCAS composition varies between + 9‰ and + 15‰ in the lower 2.5 m. In the overlying interval, CAS abundance remains low while δ34SCAS rises ~ 5‰ and varies more widely between + 10‰ and + 21‰. The range of δ34Spy of the cap dolostone overlaps with that of δ34SCAS, but direct comparison shows that δ34Spy is typically greater than δ34SCAS measured from the same samples. Hypotheses to explain the observations must account for both the remarkable sulfur isotope enrichment of pyrites and the inverse fractionation. We propose that CAS and pyrite were derived from two isotopically distinct reservoirs in a chemically stratified basin or a basin with a sulfate minimum zone. In this model, CAS was derived from shallow, oxic surface waters with moderate sulfate concentration and depleted in 34S due to the post-glacial influx of sulfur from continental weathering. In contrast, pyrite was derived from anoxic bottom waters (or a sulfate minimum zone) with low sulfate concentration and 34S enrichment due to long-term syn-glacial sulfate reduction. The rapid shift in CAS abundance and sulfur isotope composition within the cap dolostone is interpreted to reflect the mixing of the two reservoirs after initial deglaciation. Comparison with other post-Marinoan cap carbonates shows significant spatial heterogeneity in δ34SCAS, which together with strong temporal variation in δ34SCAS, points to generally low sulfate concentrations in post-Marinoan oceans.  相似文献

Instrumental climate records from the central Canadian treeline zone display a pattern of variation similar to general Northern Hemisphere temperature trends. To examine whether this general correspondence extends back beyond the instrumental record, we obtained a sediment core from Lake S41, a small lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada at 63°43.11′ N, 109°19.07′ W. A radiocarbon-based chronology was developed for the core. The sediments were analyzed for organic-matter content by loss-on-ignition (LOI), biogenic-silica content (BSi), and chironomid community composition to reconstruct July air temperature and summer water temperature. The paleolimnological records were compared with records of atmospheric CO2 concentration, solar variability, and hemispheric temperature variations over the past 2000 years. The results of the analyses suggest that widely-documented long-term variations in Northern Hemisphere temperature associated with radiative forcing, namely the cooling following the medieval period during the Little Ice Age (LIA), and twentieth century warming, are represented in the central Canadian treeline zone. There is also evidence of a brief episode of warming during the eighteenth century. As evidenced by LOI and BSi, the twentieth century warming is typified by increased lake productivity relative to the LIA. Depending upon the measure, the increased productivity of the twentieth century nearly equals or exceeds that of any other period in the past 2000 years. In contrast, the rate of chironomid head capsule accumulation decreased and remained low during the twentieth century. Although the chironomid-inferred temperature reconstructions indicate cooling during the LIA, they present no evidence of greatly increased temperatures during the twentieth century. Warming during the twentieth century might have enhanced lake stratification, and the response of the chironomid fauna to warming was attenuated by decreased oxygen and lower temperatures in the hypolimnion of the more stratification-prone lake.

Models for the chemical evolution of the galaxy are constructed in which the time evolution is imposed by the contraction rate of the galaxy and present observations of stellar metal abundances as a function of height above the galactic plane. Stars with massm?3.5m do not contribute to the metal enrichment of the interstellar gas, and we argue that the interstellar metal abundance at this epoch should be fairly insensitive to the size of the mass fraction of the galaxy that condenses into such stars. The birth rate for stars more massive than 3.5m is assumed proportional toV gal ?n , whereV gal is the contracting volume of the main body of the galaxy. If a dynamic time-scale is adopted for the contraction of the galaxy, then the assumed power-law birth rate yields suitable chemical evolution models only if observed Population II metals are synthesized in stars more massive than about 8.5m . This mass range is consistent with the predictions of current stellar-evolution theory. Provided the birth function does include stars more massive than 8.5m , the relation between the value of the parametern in the birth rate and the observed chemical evolution rate is not particularly sensitive to the specific form adopted for the initial mass spectrum, or to the proportionality constant in the birth rate. We find (i)n?1.4, in general, and (ii)n is close to 1.4 if the contraction of the galaxy to a heighth=400 pc above the plane occurs at close to the free-fall rate. These results are independent of the form of the initial mass spectrum, providedS 3 is small. HereS is the total mass fraction of the galaxy that cycles through stars during its contraction. Numerical models, with an explicit initial mass spectrum, indicate that the same restrictions on the values ofn apply approximately whenS 3 is not small. To introduce low mass stars, we allow the birth rate for stars more massive than 3.5m to level off at a time intervalt L just before the contraction of the galaxy stops, while the total birth rate remains a simple power law. We find that reasonable models are obtained witht L ?1.5×107 yr if the galaxy contracts at a dynamic rate. However, aside from these restrictions on the values ofn andt L , there is no uniquely favored model. For any suitable model, the supernova rate must be small enough so that shock waves from neighboring supernovae do not collide during the adiabatic expansion stage. Otherwise, the interstellar gas would not have time to cool, and its high temperature would tend to impede both star formation and the rapid contraction of the galaxy. The supernova rates in the numerical models given here are small enough to avoid this problem, but large enough to achieve a uniform metal abundance on a time scale short compared to the chemical-evolution time scale. At the epoch considered here, the interstellar metal abundance is approximately less than 0.4Z , and the models are assumed to apply before galactic-scale inhomogeneities, such as the galactic nucleus, become important. Therefore, the chemical mixing time scales imply that most Population II stars of the same age should have approximately the same initial metal abundance, unless the clustering of supernova explosions associated with massive Population II stars is significant. It is shown that collisions between shock waves from neighboring supernovae can produce local regions of significantly enhanced density. The peak bolometric luminosity of the galaxy during its contraction is similar to that predicted by Partridge and Peebles (1967a), but it occurs during the final stages of contraction to the disc. Numerical models give values between 13 and 34 yr?1 for the average number of supernova explosions per year during this bright phase. The X-ray luminosity of the galaxy from these supernovae may be comparable to that of Seyfert galaxies.  相似文献

Estimation of swell conditions in coastal regions is important for a variety of public, government, and research applications. Driving a model of the near-shore wave transformation from an offshore global swell model such as NOAA WaveWatch3 is an economical means to arrive at swell size estimates at particular locations of interest. Recently, some work (e.g. Browne et al. [Browne, M., Strauss, D., Castelle, B., Blumenstein, M., Tomlinson, R., 2006. Local swell estimation and prediction from a global wind-wave model. IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters 3 (4), 462–466.]) has examined an artificial neural network (ANN) based, empirical approach to wave estimation. Here, we provide a comprehensive evaluation of two data driven approaches to estimating waves near-shore (linear and ANN), and also contrast these with a more traditional spectral wave simulation model (SWAN). Performance was assessed on data gathered from a total of 17 near-shore locations, with heterogenous geography and bathymetry, around the continent of Australia over a 7 month period. It was found that the ANNs out-performed SWAN and the non-linear architecture consistently out-performed the linear method. Variability in performance and differential performance with regard to geographical location could largely be explained in terms of the underlying complexity of the local wave transformation.  相似文献

Tidal waves driven by Titan's orbital eccentricity through the time-dependent component of Saturn's gravitational potential attain nonlinear, saturation amplitudes (|T|>10 K, , and ) in the upper atmosphere (?500 km) due to the approximate exponential growth as the inverse square root of pressure. The gravitational tides, with vertical wavelengths of ∼100-150 km above 500 km altitude, carry energy fluxes sufficient in magnitude to affect the energy balance of the upper atmosphere with heating rates in the altitude range of 500-900 km.  相似文献
