During the past ten years of the Association of American State Geologists-Mineral Management Service Continental Margins Program, the Maryland Geological Sur vey investigated the sedimentological, paleontological, stratigraphical and geophysi cal character of Maryland's inner continental shelf. Based on seismic records and sedimentological analyses completed during the first four years, a late Quaternary stratigraphic model was developed. Five distinct stratigraphic units were identified and described on the Maryland inner shelf. These units represent late Pleistocene interglacial deposits, the oldest of which corresponds to pre-Illinoian (oxygen-isotope stages 7 and or 9) transgressive shelf sands. Overlying the Q1 unit, the Q2 unit is a 6-meter thick mud sequence of oxygen-isotope stage 5 (128-75 ka) age. Units Q3 and Q4 representing fluvial and leading edge estuarine deposits (oxygen-isotope stages 4, 3 and 2) filled numerous paleochannels that were incised into units Q2 and Q1. Modern trailing-edge transgressive shelf shoals (Unit Q5) discontinuously cap the sequence. The 5th and 6th years studies reported on the economic minerals of surficial and cored sediments. Vibracores collected off the Maryland's shelf during previous studies were analyzed for mineral types and abundances, weight percent of general size fractions, and heavy mineral (HM) content. Mineralogic maturity indices were compiled to correlate the THM and economic heavy minerals (EHM) abundances with position offshore, sediment type, and the indices themselves. For the 7th year, the Maryland Geological Survey re-examined geophysical records and lithological data originally collected by the Army Corps of Engineers to locate and assess beach fill borrow areas for the Ocean City Beach Replenishment Project. Data from 163 vibracores and over 300 kilometers of high-resolution seismic profile records collected off Ocean City, Maryland, supported the strati graphic model developed by MGS during the first four years of the AASG-MMS program. The Maryland coastal bays became the focus of study during the 8th and 9th years during which seismic records, cores and surficial sediment were collected in Isle of Wight and Assawoman Bays. Shallow pretransgression surface was mapped, relating the existing streams to offshore paleochannels. The tenth year study focused on developing a repository for vibracores collected on Maryland's inner continental shelf. 相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide can form through the interaction of pyrite and anoxic water. The oxidation of pyrite results in the precipitation of sulfates and iron oxides, high redox potentials (~ 1000 mV) and acidic pH (3–4). The oxidative potential of the resultant solution may be responsible for the oxidation of organic compounds, as observed in the subsurface of the Rio Tinto Mars analog. On Mars subsurface migration of groundwater interacting with volcanogenic massive pyrite deposits would have mobilized acidic and oxidizing fluids through large portions of the crust, resulting in the widespread deposition of sulfates and iron oxides. This groundwater could have leached substantial volumes of aquifer material and crustal rocks, thereby erasing any organic compounds possibly down to depths of hundreds of meters. Therefore, the preservation of organic biosignatures must have been severely constrained in the portions of the ancient Martian crust that were exposed to aqueous processes, calling for a redefinition of the future targets in the search for biomolecular traces of life on Mars. 相似文献

The relationship between total and chemically labile Fe has been studied in estuarine, coastal and shelf waters of the Gulf of Maine, U.S.A. Measurements of the labile fraction of total Fe, defined by complexation with 8-hydroxyquinoline in 1 h, correlate with the availability of Fe to marine phytoplankton and therefore can be used to estimate Fe availability in seawater. The results show that the relative lability (=labile/total) of Fe in seawater varied both spatially and temporally from near-zero to 100%. Although particulate Fe (>0.45 μm) was generally less labile than dissolved Fe (<0.45 μm), the particulate fraction often contributed substantially to labile Fe concentrations overall. Conversely, as much as 75% of ‘dissolved’ Fe was non-labile, and therefore was probably not available to phytoplankton. In seawater/river-water mixing experiments, aggregation diminished the relative lability of Fe by 30%, even though much of it remained in the ‘dissolved’ fraction. Considering phytoplankton nutrition, these results demonstrate that equating dissolved Fe concentrations with ‘available’ metal can be misleading. Furthermore, the large variability observed in the labile proportion of total Fe in seawater indicates that Fe availability to phytoplankton cannot be estimated by applying fixed lability-ratios to total Fe concentrations. 相似文献

In the past the global, fully coupled, time-dependent mathematical model of the Earths thermo-sphere/ionosphere/plasmasphere (CTIP) has been unable to reproduce accurately observed values of the maximum plasma frequency, foF2, at extreme geophysical locations such as the Argentine Islands during the summer solstice where the ionosphere remains in sunlight throughout the day. This is probably because the seasonal dependence of thermospheric cooling by 5.3 m nitric oxide has been neglected and the photodissociation of O2 and heating rate calculations have been over-simplified. Now we have included an up-to-date calculation of the solar EUV and UV thermospheric heating rate, coupled with a new calculation of a diurnally varying O2 photodissociation rate, in the model. Seasonally dependent 5.3 m nitric oxide cooling is also included. With these important improvements, it is found that model values of foF2 are in substantially better agreement with observation. The height of the F2-peak is reduced throughout the day, but remains within acceptable limits of values derived from observation, except at around 0600 h LT. We also carry out two studies of the sensitivity of the upper atmosphere to changes in the magnitude of nitric oxide cooling and photodissociation rates. We find that hmF2 increases with increased heating, whilst foF2 falls. The converse is true for an increase in the cooling rate. Similarly increasing the photodissociation rate increases both hmF2 and foF2. These changes are explained in terms of changes in the neutral temperature, composition and neutral wind. 相似文献

The impacts of climate change on future river flows are a growing concern. Typically, impacts are simulated by driving hydrological models with climate model ensemble data. The U.K. Climate Projections 2009 (UKCP09) provided probabilistic projections, enabling a risk-based approach to decision-making under climate change. Recently, an update was released—UKCP18—so there is a need for information on how impacts may differ. The probabilistic projections from UKCP18 and UKCP09 are here applied using the change factor method with catchment-based hydrological modelling for 10 catchments across England. Projections of changes in median, mean, high, and low flows are made for the 2050s, using the A1B emissions scenario from UKCP09 and UKCP18 as well as the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emissions scenarios from UCKP18. The results show that, in all catchments for all flow measures, the central estimate of change under UKCP18 is similar to that from UKCP09 (A1B emissions). However, the probabilistic uncertainty ranges from UKCP18 are, in all cases, greater than from UKCP09, despite UKCP18 having a smaller ensemble size than UKCP09. Although there are differences between the central estimates of change using UKCP18 RCP4.5, RCP8.5 and A1B emissions, there is considerable overlap in the uncertainty ranges. The results suggest that existing assessments of hydrological impacts remain relevant, though it will be necessary to evaluate sensitive decisions using the latest projections. The analysis will aid development of advice to users of current guidance based on UKCP09 and help make decisions about the prioritization of further hydrological impacts work using UKCP18, which should also apply other products from UKCP18 like the 12-km regional data. 相似文献

One of the most important considerations in designing cut slopes in sub-horizontal, inter-layered, sedimentary rocks subject to differential weathering is predicting the total depth of undercutting. Undercutting-induced rockfalls are a major problem for many roadways in Ohio. The total depth of undercutting was measured for 59 profiles from 18 cut slope sites in Ohio with references to cut faces of hard rock units containing pre-split blast-hole traces. The presence of blast hole traces ensured that the rock face represented the slope surface that was cut during construction. Additionally, initial design plans were used for reference. Step-wise regression was used to determine the geological, geotechnical, and geometrical factors that have the highest influence on the total depth of undercutting. Selected independent factors used in the regression analysis included the vertical distance of the undercut unit from the slope crest, the relative position of the undercut unit from the slope crest, the total thickness of the undercut unit, the spacing of orthogonal joints within the undercut unit, the slake durability index value of the undercutting unit, the initial slope angle, and the age of the road cut. Factors that showed the most significant correlation with the total depth of undercutting were found to be the vertical distance of the undercut unit from the slope crest, the relative position of the undercut unit from the slope crest, the total thickness of the undercut unit, joint spacing within the undercut unit, and the slake durability index of the undercutting unit. The regression analysis resulted in an R2 value of 0.61, with the depth of undercutting correlating most strongly with a closer relative position of the undercut unit to the slope crest above it and to a closer spacing of orthogonal joints within the undercut unit. These results can be attributed to the fact that more porous and fractured rock units closer to the slope crest intercept and transport greater amounts of infiltrating groundwater, producing greater depths of undercutting.
