Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb and Zn were studied in cores of peat from two major vegetational areas of the Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia; both total peat and organic fractions were investigated. Except for Hg and Pb, metal concentrations were either higher or equal to Clarke values. The sandy bedrock is not an important contributor to metal concentrations found in peat. Levels of metals in a given peat sample were related to plant materials which gave rise to the peat; it does not appear that vegetational environment plays a critical role in determining trace metal distribution, but does play a role in determining the amount of humic or pre-vitrinitic constituents that eventually are found in coal.  相似文献

Cumulative and differential cumulative seismic strain release of shallow earthquakes during 1964 through 1972 show significant time-delayed correlation for many of the rises and/or sinks of tectonic plate boundaries for the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. For the Pacific, time delays are almost exclusively from areas of higher to areas of lower strain release, and could imply viscous stress relaxation along or near the lithosphere—asthenosphere boundary. Seismically determined slip rates for many of the subduction zones during 1964–1972 are lower than those of the preceding part of the century by a factor of 5. The significant correlation between many rises and sinks suggests worldwide interaction and coupling of plate motion.  相似文献

A formulation for the effects of a time-dependent input flux to a sedimentation system consisting of a diffusive layer underlain by a non-diffusive medium has been developed. The intent is to provide interpretation procedures for the determination of sedimentation rate, diffusion coefficient and mixed layer thickness from observed tracer concentrations. The successive intrusive events in the eastern part of the south Rogaland anorthosito-mangeritic complex have been dated by the UPb method applied to zircon, sphene, monazite, uraninite and accessorily by the RbSr whole rock isochron method. The whole magmatic activity in that part of the complex takes place in a short time interval: between 955 m.y., the intrusion age of the Bjerkrem-Sogndal layered norites, and 910 m.y., the emplacement age of a pergmatite in the Lyngdal granodiorite. The UPb geochronological data are consistent with field and petrological data on origin and mutual relations of the intrusives. The RbSr data give incoherent results probably due to open system behaviour in some cases.  相似文献

The 87Sr86Sr ratio of interstitial waters squeezed from recent sediments of the Pacific Ocean increases from 0.70920 ± 0.00017 (2σ) to 0.70960 ± 0.0023 and 0.70984 ± 0.00040 at 1.50 and 1.60 m depth—reference value for sea water: 0.70910 ± 0.00035. This variation underlines the likely existence of exchanges between the clays and the interstitial environment. The isotopic homogenization of strontium between the clays and their environment, result of these changes, becomes thus a credible phenomenon. This is a new argument for the dating of clays by the RbSr method.  相似文献

The palaeomagnetism of Middle Triassic (224 ± 5 m.y.) igneous rocks from the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin (67°40′W, 30°20′S) was investigated through 86 oriented hand samples from 11 sites. At least one reversal of the geomagnetic field has been found in these rocks. Nine sites yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 239°E, 79°S (α95 = 15°, k = 13).The K-Ar age determinations of five igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation give a mean age of 232 ± 4 m.y. (Early Triassic). The palaeomagnetism of six igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation (68°W, 35°S) was investigated through 60 oriented samples. These units, two reversed relative to the present magnetic field of the Earth and four normal, yield a pole at 236°E, 76°S (α95 = 18°, k = 14).Data from the Puesto Viejo Formation indicate, for the first time on the basis of palaeomagnetic and radiometric data, that the Illawarra Zone, which defines the end of the Kiaman Magnetic Interval, extends at least down to 232 ± 4 m.y. within the Early Triassic. The palaeomagnetic poles for the igneous rocks of the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin and Puesto Viejo Formation form an “age group” with the South American Triassic palaeomagnetic poles (mean pole position: 239°E, 77°S; α95 = 6.6°, k = 190). The Middle and Upper Permian, Triassic and Middle Jurassic palaeomagnetic poles for South America would define a “time group” reflecting a quasi-static interval (mean pole position: 232°E, 81°S; α95 = 4°, k = 131).  相似文献

Recent sedimentary facies in marginal basins which are isolated from terrigenous sedimentation have been analysed in relation to their tectonic environment to generate a general evolutionary model for sedimentation in marginal basins of this type. Marginal basins are assumed to open symmetrically, while the sedimentation pattern is asymmetric. A volcaniclastic apron forms as a large submarine fan complex adjacent to the volcanic chain; beyond the distal end of the apron pelagic brown clay with a high content of montmorillonite, glass and phenocrysts accumulates. Pelagic oozes with high contents of CaCO3 are deposited in distal parts of the basin. The volcaniclastic apron migrates toward the remnant arc, prograding over older pelagic sediments. Cessation of spreading has little effect on the sedimentation pattern if volcanism is still active. When volcanic activity ceases, the dominant sediment sources are biogenous and wind-blown pelagics. Most basins by this time have subsided below the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) and these brown clays accumulate at rates near 2.5 m/m.y. No simple pattern of sedimentation emerges from the available data in marginal basins adjacent to continents or to major sources of terrigenous material.  相似文献

Global sea-level changes are expressed in the coastal landforms and deposits of northern San Clemente Island. Stratigraphic, radiometric, amino acid, and pedologic dating techniques have allowed the development of a chronology of sea-level changes for about the last 500,000 yr. A uranium-series date on coral of about 127,000 yr for the 2nd terrace serves as a calibration point for amino acid age estimates of four other mapped terraces. Two of these terraces have age estimates of about 80,000–105,000 yr, another has an age estimate of about 127,000 yr, and the 5th terrace on the west side of the island is estimated to be about 415,000–575,000 yr old. These dates correlate reasonably well with marine terraces dated elsewhere and with stages of the oxygen-isotope record that are thought to represent high stands of the sea. Weakly cemented calcareous dune sands (eolianites) are moderately extensive on northern San Clemente Island and appear to represent low stands of the sea, since calcareous shelf sands were the most likely source. A radiocarbon date of about 22,000 yr suggests that the youngest eolianite was deposited during the last glacial maximum. An older eolianite is estimated to be about 140,000–195,000 yr old based on stratigraphic relations and degree of soil development. The suggested ages for the eolianites also correlate well with oxygen-isotope estimates of low sea levels.  相似文献
