The polarization of Pluto has been measured for a range of solar phase angles from 0.8 to 1.8°. A mean linear polarization of 0.29 ± 0.01% (error of the mean) was found. No dependence of both the amount of polarization and position angles with rotational phase or solar phase angle could be detected. The positional angles of polarization agree with calculated position angles of the defect of illumination and are therefore parallel to the scattering plane. The observed polarization cannot be explained as resulting purely from a surface material which is similar to asteroidal surfaces. A hypothesis of polarization from a thin atmosphere, in addition to the surface polarization, is advanced. 相似文献

High-energy proton (E
p > 55 MeV) and electron (E
e > 50 keV) events were observed by University of Iowa experiments on the satellites Explorer 33 and 35. The solar X-ray (2–12 Å) flares associated with the energetic proton events were found to have in general higher peak fluxes, considerably longer decay times (t) and smaller rise to decay time ratios (r) than the X-ray flares associated with the electron events. The most common decay times and rise to decay time ratios are: 80 t 100 min, 0.1 r 0.2 for the proton X-ray flares and t 20 min, 0.3 r 0.7 for the electron ones. 相似文献

In this review paper we first discuss the dimensions of major ring features and of the disk of the planet. We then summarize the observed photometric parameters, and because frozen H2O appears to be a major ring constituent, we compare the appropriate photometric properties of various forms of snow with those of the ring. We examine several ring models, noting certain characteristics that any model should supply. In our view, a physical means of accounting for the observed ring thickness of ~2 km is a prime requirement. There appears to be one model that presents no clear observational or theoretical inconsistency. Finally, we list certain problems whose solutions should broaden our knowledge of the ring system. 相似文献

The radio emission from Jupiter at 10, 21 cm wavelength has been measured with a spatial resolution of the order of 1 Jupiter radius. This may be analytically reduced to the emission per cubic centimeter of source at each measured frequency. The theoretically predicted synchrotron emission of electrons as a function of frequency, magnetic field and electron energy can then be compared to the observed source emissivity to obtain the number density and ‘temperature’ of the electrons. Present observations taken at different epochs are not sufficiently reliable to infer peak energies within an order of magnitude. Nevertheless the present results indicate that electrons diffuse in rapidly (in a time of the order of months) conserving the first adiabatic invariant and reach a peak energy at about 2 Jupiter radii. The electron energy decreases rapidly nearer the planet because of energy lost to radiation in the large magnetic field close to the planet. 相似文献

One of the most striking and persistent features in high latitude regions as seen by the ISIS-2 scanning auroral photometer is a fairly uniform belt of diffuse auroral emission extending along the auroral oval. Indications are that this region follows, contributes to, and may in a sense actually define the auroral oval during quiet times.The diffuse belt is sharply defined at its equatorward edge, which is located at an invariant latitude of about 65° in the midnight sector during relatively low magnetic activity (Kp = 1?3). The poleward edge of the region is not as sharply defined but is typically at about 68°. Discrete auroras (arcs and bands) are located, in general, near the poleward boundary of the diffuse aurora. The position of the belt appears to be relatively unaffected by the occurrence of individual substorms, even when discrete forms have moved well poleward. Representative intensities at 5577 Å are 1–2 kR (corrected for albedo) at quiet times and may reach 5 kR during an auroral substorm.It appears that the mantle aurora and proton aurora constitute this diffuse aurora in the midnight sector. Precipitating protons and electrons both contribute to the emissions in this region. 相似文献

The satellite 1965-11D was the final-stage rocket used to launch Cosmos 54, 55 and 56 into orbit on 21 February 1965. The orbit of 1965-11D was inclined at 56° to the Equator, with an initial perigee height of 280 km; the lifetime was nearly 5 yr, with decay on 23 December 1969. The orbit has been determined at 75 epochs during the life, using the RAE orbit determination program PROP with over 4000 observations, photographic, visual and radar. Observations from the Hewitt camera at Malvern were available for 34 of the 75 orbits and typical accuracies for these orbits are 0.0005° in inclination and 100 m in perigee height.The variations in perigee height have been analyzed to determine reliable values of density scale height, at heights between 240 and 360 km. The analysis also revealed a rapid decrease of 5 km in perigee distance early in 1966, attributed to the escape of residual propellants.The variations in orbital inclination have been analyzed to determine upper-atmosphere zonal winds and 15th-order harmonics in the geopotential. The region of the upper atmosphere traversed by 1965-11D near its perigee is found to have had an average rotation rate of 1.10 ± 0.05 rev/day in 1966–1967, and 1.00 ± 0.03 rev/day between March 1968 and May 1969. In late 1969 there were probably wide variations in zonal winds, with east-to-west winds of order 100 m/s followed by west-to-east winds of order 200 m/s. The changes in inclination at the 15th-order resonance in July 1969 have been analyzed to give the first accurate values of lumped 15th-order harmonics obtained from a high-drag satellite. This success points the way towards similar analyses of the many other high-drag satellites that pass through 15th-order resonance, to evaluate individual geopotential coefficients of order 15 and even degree. 相似文献

The analysis of lunar laser ranging data requires very accurate calculations of the lunar physical librations. Libration terms are given which arise from the additive and planetary terms in the lunar theory. The large size of the recently discovered terms due to third degree gravitational harmonics will allow some of these harmonics to be measured, in addition to and, by laser ranging to the Moon.
