Abstract— A composition approximating the lithology A groundmass of the Elephant Moraine (EET) 79001 martian basalt (Eg; McSween and Jarosewich, 1983) has been used to investigate the petrogenesis of the meteorite and the behavior of Cr and V at different oxygen fugacities. Crystallization experiments were carried out over a range of temperatures, and oxygen fugacities of either iron‐wüstite (IW) or IW + 2 (i.e., 1.5 log units below the quartz‐fayalite‐magnetite (QFM) buffer). Comparison of trace element concentrations (obtained by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis) in experimental silicates with those of natural silicates supports the Fe‐Ti oxide‐derived oxygen fugacity of QFM ?1.8 ± 0.3 for this basalt (Herd et al., 2001). Experimental distribution coefficients, in conjunction with SIMS analyses of rims from the olivine and pyroxene xenocrysts in lithology A, as well as analyses of lithology A groundmass pigeonite cores, are used to calculate coexisting liquid concentrations of V and Cr. Liquid compositions derived from pigeonite xenocryst rims and groundmass pigeonite cores are similar, suggesting that the rims of orthopyroxene xenocrysts are overgrowths, which have not previously been accounted for when reconstructing the groundmass composition. This implies that the Eg composition requires modification. A similar exercise for the ferroan rims on olivine xenocrysts yields very different liquid compositions, indicating that these rims are not overgrowths but are part of the xenocryst assemblage. These results are shown to be consistent with the petrography of lithology A xenocrysts.  相似文献

The high degree of symmetry often assumed in studies of the structure and stability of coronal magnetic field configurations is restrictive and can yield misleading results. We have therefore developed fully three-dimensional numerical methods for constructing force-free equilibria and for examining their stability properties, which make no assumptions about symmetry. A test of the stability analysis has been performed by applying it to the Gold-Hoyle twisted flux tube, which is known to be kink-unstable if the helical field makes more than about one turn between the line-tying end-plates. Our preliminary result is that the critical number of turns is about 1.1, in good agreement with the previous best estimate. However, we find that the growth rate, which has not been discussed previously, is orders of magnitude smaller than expected, even when the flux tube is twisted far beyond the stability limit.  相似文献

In Part I of this paper, we derived a set of data tapers designed to minimize the spectral leakage of decaying sinusoids immersed in white noise. Multiplying a long-period seismic record by K of these tapers creates K time series. A decaying sinusoid is fit to these K time series in the frequency domain at a number of chosen frequencies by a least-squares procedure. The fit is tested at each frequency using a statistical F -test. In Part I, we demonstrated that the multiple-taper method is a more sensitive detector of decaying sinusoids than the conventional direct spectral-estimate.
In this paper, we present a number of extensions to the multiple-taper method. We explain how the technique can be modified to estimate the harmonic components of records containing gaps. We discuss how sinusoids at frequencies between FFT bin frequencies can be detected, and how this method can be combined with conventional multi-station stacking procedures.  相似文献

The problem of synchrotron radiation spectra is treated from the viewpoint of deconvolving the spectrum of ultrarelativistic source electrons from the observed photon spectrum. It is shown that for homogeneous sources the problem amounts to inversion of a Meijer transform with a modified Bessel finction kernel. A precise analytic inversion is only possible in the complex plane but Meijer transform tables are available for a wide range of functions. More convenient inversion formulae prove possible by use of a Laplace transform approximation or by analysing the spectra in terms of their integral moments. The filtering property of the transform is also established showing that the contribution to the synchrotron spectrum of high frequency components in the electron spectrum declines exponentially with their frequency. Thus, as with other Laplace-like transforms, only a few terms in an electron spectrum expansion can be deconvolved for any plausible noise level in the synchrotron spectrum.  相似文献

We derive upper limits to the radiation temperaturesT t(k) for emission near the fundamental and second harmonic of the electron plasma frequency in terms of the effective temperature for plasma wavesT l(k). We findT t(k)(c/(3)1/2 V e)3 T l(k) for emission near the fundamental which differs from the result of Melrose (1970b) by the factor in parentheses. This factor can exceed 4×104 in some plasmas. The conditions under which this limit could be reached are delinated. An oil-spill fishery impact assessment model composed of an oil-spill fates model, a shelf hydrodynamics model, an ichthyoplankton transport and fate model, and a fishery population model originally developed by Reed & Spaulding, has been improved and applied to the Georges Bank-Gulf of Maine region to assess the probable impact of oil spills on several key fisheries. The model addresses direct impacts of oil on the commercial fishery through hydrocarbon-induced egg and larval mortality. This early life stage hydrocarbon-induced mortality is estimated by assuming a toxicity threshold approach and by mapping the spatial/temporal interaction between the subsurface oil concentrations caused by the spill and the developing eggs and larvae. Model output is given in terms of differential catch, with a comparison made of hydrocarbon-impacted fisheries.Simulations of tanker and blowout spills at two separate locations for each season of the year in the Outer Continental Shelf lease areas have been completed for Atlantic herring, haddock, and Atlantic cod. Results to date suggest a complex interaction among spill location and timing, the spatial and temporal spawning distribution of the species, and the hydrodynamics of the area. The largest impacts occur for spring and winter spills.  相似文献

In order to quantify possible fractionation of U and Pb into a metallic core, we have performed piston cylinder and multi-anvil press experiments at high pressure (up to 20 GPa) and high temperature (up to 2400 °C) and obtained the distribution coefficient Dmetal-silicate and the exchange partition coefficient Kmetal-silicate for these elements between metal and silicates (mineral or liquid). and depend strongly on the S content of the metallic phase, and also on the oxygen fugacity, in agreement with an effective valence state of 4 for U in silicates and 2 for Pb in silicates. and show no discernable pressure and temperature trend. U remains lithophile even at high pressure and high temperature but its lithophile nature decreases at very low oxygen fugacity. From our experimental data, it was possible to calculate the U and Pb contents of the cores of Mars and Earth under core-mantle equilibrium conditions at high pressure and high temperature. From the Dmetal-silicate of the present study, we obtained that: 0.008 ppm < Pbin the core <4.4 ppm, and 0.0003 ppb < Uin the core < 0.63 ppb, depending on whether the metal is S-free or S-saturated respectively, and if the mantle was molten or solid during the segregation process of the Earth’s core around ΔIW-2. For Mars, based on a core segregation process around ΔIW-1, we obtained that: 0.005 ppm < Pbin the core < 3 ppm, and 0.00002 ppb < Uin the core < 0.05 ppb, depending on the metallic composition: S-free or S-saturated respectively.Our results suggest that the low concentration of Pb in the terrestrial mantle could not be explained by an early Pb sequestration in the Earth’s core even if S is the dominant light element of the core. If we assume a magma ocean scenario, U might produced a maximum value of 1.5% of the total heat budget of the core with a segregation occurring below ΔIW-3. The values found in the present study for U in the Martian core suggest that the magnetic field activity of Mars before ∼0.5 b.y. after its formation would be difficult to ascribe to the decay of U alone.  相似文献
