Deriving drainage networks and catchment boundaries: a new methodology combining digital elevation data and environmental characteristics 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Digital data on the position and characteristics of river networks and catchments are important for the analysis of pressures and impacts on water resources. GIS tools allow for the combined analysis of digital elevation data and environmental parameters in order to derive this kind of information. This article presents a new approach making use of medium-resolution digital elevation data (250-m grid cell size) and information on climate, vegetation cover, terrain morphology, soils and lithology to derive river networks and catchments over extended areas.In general, methods to extract channel networks at small scale use a constant threshold for the critical contributing area, independent of widely varying landscape conditions. As a consequence, the resulting drainage network does not reflect the natural variability in drainage density. To overcome this limitation, a classification of the landscape is proposed. The various data available are analysed in an integrated approach in order to characterise the terrain with respect to its ability to develop lower or higher drainage densities, resulting in five landscape types. For each landscape type, the slope–area relationship is then derived and the critical contributing area is determined. In the subsequent channel extraction, a dedicated critical contributing area threshold is used for each landscape type.The described methodology has been developed and tested for the territory of Italy. Results have been validated comparing the derived data with river and catchment data sets from other sources and at varying scales. Between September and November 1999, two test seismic lines were recorded in the southern Apennine region of southern Italy using the global offset technique, which involves the acquisition of a wide offset range using two simultaneously active seismic spreads. One consisted of a symmetrical spread moving along the line, with geophone arrays every 30 m and a maximum offset of 3.6 km. The other one consisted of fixed geophone arrays every 90 m with a maximum offset of 18 km. This experimental acquisition project was carried out as part of the enhanced seismic in thrust belt (ESIT) research project, funded by the European Union, Enterprise Oil and Eni-Agip. An iterative and interactive tomographic inversion of refraction/reflection arrivals was carried out on the data from line ESIT700 to produce a velocity/interface model in depth, which used all the available offsets. The tomographic models allowed the reconstruction of layer interface geometries and interval velocities for the target carbonate platform (Apula) and the overburden sequence. The value of this technique is highlighted by the fact that the standard approach, based on near-vertical reflection seismic and a conventional processing flow, produced poor seismic images in both stack and migrated sections. 相似文献

The purpose of the so-called IFFI project (Inventario dei Fenomeni Franosi in Italia—Inventory of Landslides in Italy) and of many other related activities carried out by the Centro Regionale per le Ricerche Territoriali e Geologiche of ARPA Piemonte (Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale—Regional Agency for Environmental Protection), is to map all the existing landslides in Piemonte (including both results of monitoring data and available historical data). ARPA carried out new systematic surveys using
airphoto interpretation and created a specific alphanumeric geological information systems (GIS)-based database to store and
process all the collected data. In order to obtain proper landslide-hazard zoning, it is necessary to provide a landslide

Summary We show that daily precipitation is characterized by a behaviour regulated by power laws. Both for the frequency distribution
of both event intensity and drought duration. In this respect, precipitation appears to follow self-organized criticality
laws, much as other geophysical phenomena such as avalanches and earthquakes. We use this feature to validate the simulation
of daily precipitation events in a multi-decadal regional climate model experiment for the European region. Our focus is on
the Italian peninsula and we show that both the model results and the station observations for daily precipitation intensity
and drought length follow power laws with comparable values of the relevant parameters. We suggest that complex systems theory

AbstractWater quality of the Uruguay River was evaluated with multi-parametric (temperature, turbidity, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen) and sediment trap data (particle flux, total organic carbon and nitrogen contents) and correlated to precipitation, river discharge and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indices for the period 2006–2011. Hydro-meteorological parameters averaged 24–85% variability with coincident precipitation (200–400 mm month-1), discharge (7000–28 000 m3 s-1) and turbidity peaks (50–80 NTU) in the austral spring, and absolute maxima during the El Niño 2009 episode. Spectral analysis of discharge and sea-surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) showed consistent variance maxima at approx. 3 and 1.5 years. Deseasonalized discharge was significantly correlated to SSTA. During river floods, pH decreased (from 7.5 to 6.6) and particle dynamics peaked (turbidity: 15–80 NTU; vertical fluxes: 20–200 g m-2 d-1; total solid load: <1000 to 100 000 t d-1),whereas TOC remained stable (3.2 ± 0.8%) and C/N ratios increased (10–12) due to the higher contribution of terrestrial detritus. 相似文献

AbstractFlood frequency estimation is crucial in both engineering practice and hydrological research. Regional analysis of flood peak discharges is used for more accurate estimates of flood quantiles in ungauged or poorly gauged catchments. This is based on the identification of homogeneous zones, where the probability distribution of annual maximum peak flows is invariant, except for a scale factor represented by an index flood. The numerous applications of this method have highlighted obtaining accurate estimates of index flood as a critical step, especially in ungauged or poorly gauged sections, where direct estimation by sample mean of annual flood series (AFS) is not possible, or inaccurate. Therein indirect methods have to be used. Most indirect methods are based upon empirical relationships that link index flood to hydrological, climatological and morphological catchment characteristics, developed by means of multi-regression analysis, or simplified lumped representation of rainfall–runoff processes. The limits of these approaches are increasingly evident as the size and spatial variability of the catchment increases. In these cases, the use of a spatially-distributed, physically-based hydrological model, and time continuous simulation of discharge can improve estimation of the index flood. This work presents an application of the FEST-WB model for the reconstruction of 29 years of hourly streamflows for an Alpine snow-fed catchment in northern Italy, to be used for index flood estimation. To extend the length of the simulated discharge time series, meteorological forcings given by daily precipitation and temperature at ground automatic weather stations are disaggregated hourly, and then fed to FEST-WB. The accuracy of the method in estimating index flood depending upon length of the simulated series is discussed, and suggestions for use of the methodology provided.
