Concentrations of mercury, lead, copper, zinc, cadmium, iron and aluminium were recorded in coastal and river mouths surficial sediments, collected along the Mediterranean coast of Israel, during 1988–1991. The levels of trace metal concentrations when normalized against Fe concentration (trace metal/iron ratios) indicated no contamination at most of the stations along the coast. Enrichment of Hg, Cu, Zn and Cd attributed to land-based point sources of pollution, was found in the estuaries of the Kishon and Yarkon rivers. The normalized Pb, Cu and Zn data showed a trend of increasing values from the south toward the north. This S-N trend could be a result of three processes which may be occurring simultaneously: progressive mixing between sediment with a low trace metal/iron ratio in the south, which probably represents a single source derived from the Nile region with (a) non-point source input of pollutants by atmospheric transport, or (b) with point sources of pollutants introduced by rivers and streams, or (c) a natural change in the mineralogy of the sediments along the coast with a relative increase in the trace metals or a decrease in iron as one progresses further north. The relative importance of these three possible processes remains to be established.  相似文献

Scenarios of CO2-induced climatic change, based on models produced by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab (GFDL), were used to estimate future changes in water supply in the Great Lakes Basin. The major components of annual Net Basin Supply, surface runoff and lake evaporation, were estimated using the Thornthwaite water balance model and the mass transfer approach, respectively. Two scenarios were derived from each climatic change model, one based on present normal winds, the other assuming reduced wind speeds. A third scenario was derived from GFDL, using wind speeds generated by the GFDL model. Results varied from a decrease in Net Basin Supply of 28.9% for GISS-normal winds, to a decrease of 11.7% for GFDL-reduced wind speeds. All five scenarios projected decreases. These differences in projection will have to be considered when performing climate impact studies, since economic activities affected by lake levels would probably experience different impacts under these scenarios.  相似文献

A statistical mechanical analysis of the limiting laws for coupled solid solutions shows that the random model, in which the configurational entropy is calculated as if atoms mix randomly on each crystallographic site, is correct as a first approximation. In coupled solid solutions, since atoms of different valence substitute on the same sites, significant short-range order which reduces the entropy can be expected. A first-order correction is rigorously obtained for the entropy in dilute binary short-range ordered coupled solid solutions: $$\bar S^{{\text{XS}}} {\text{/R = }}Q\left( {{\text{e}}^{--H_{\text{A}} /{\text{R}}T} \left( {\frac{{H_{\text{A}} }}{{{\text{R}}T}} + 1} \right) - 1} \right)N_2^a N_4^b ,$$ where Q is the number of positions an associated cation pair can assume per formula unit, H A is the association energy per formula unit, and N 2 a and N 4 b are the site occupancy fractions for atoms 2 and 4 that are dilute on sites a and b. S XS is the configurational entropy minus the random model entropy. Aluminous pyroxenes on the joints diopside-jadeite and diopside-CaTs are examined as examples. A total association model is examined as well as the partial association and random models. Real solution behavior must lie between the total association model and the random model. Molecular models in which the ideal activity is proportional to a mole fraction, which in itself is not always unambiguously defined, do not lie in this range and furthermore have no physical justification.  相似文献

Isotopes of plutonium (Pu), cesium (Cs), and cobalt (Co) introduced into the Hudson River Estuary from fallout deposition, the erosion of fallout-contaminated surface soils, and nuclear reactor effluent (isotopes of Cs and Co only) have been measured in water column samples collected from 1975 to 1980 Isotopic measurements conducted independently by two research groups utilizing different sampling and analytical techniques have been summarized. The major conclusions drawn from the work are that for water samples collected by the two laboratories over similar time periods, the mean concentrations of nonfilterable239,240Pu (<0.45 μm) were identical at 0.13 fCi/l, mean concentrations of both137Cs and239,240Pu in suspended particulates were more divergent at 2,270±920 pCi/kg (±1 SD) and 1,430±430 pCi/kg for137Cs, and 19±8 pCi/kg and 12±4 pCi/kg for239,240Pu The behavior of239,240Pu and137Cs within the water column is shown to diverge within brackish waters Specifically, the magnitude of the137Cs distribution coefficient (K d ) can be expressed as an inverse power function of the chloride ion concentrations for chlorinities between 0.1 and 4 g Cl/l No difference in the239,240PuK d has been observed between fresh and brackish waters Based on the expected inventories of239,240Pu and137Cs within watershed soils, the current downstream transport of these radionuclides represents fractional mobilization rates on the order of 1–4 (×10−4) per year  相似文献

Evidence for the presence of Sn2+ in an octahedral interstitial site in synthetic and natural cassiterite (SnO2) is presented. The absorption and relative absorption spectral peaks measured are similar to ones found in Sn2+-doped KI by absorption spectrophotometry and Sn2+-doped soda-silica glass by reflection spectroscopy. The estimated quantity of interstitial Sn2+ present is found by calculating that needed to balance the uncompensated M3+ impurity in substitutional Sn4+ sites where M3+ is mainly Al3+ and Fe3+. Estimates of the oscillator strengths of three Sn2+ bands detected by absorption spectrophotometry in the synthetic crystal are given. The interstitial Sn2+ content in synthetic and natural cassiterite is not affected by heating,60Co gamma irradiation, or UV light treatment with a high pressure xenon-mercury lamp.  相似文献

All objects >100 μm in apparent diameter in five polished thin sections of the Mokoia CV3 chondrite were studied and classified. Number and volume percentages and mean apparent size of each type of chondrule and inclusion were determined. Three major types of olivine chondrules were observed: igneous chondrules, recrystallized chondrules, and chondrules that appear to be accretional aggregates. Coarse-grained CAI's have igneous textures and mineral parageneses, while fine-grained CAI's are aggregates containing varying proportions of Al-rich concentric objects, Ca-rich chaotic material, and inclusion matrix. Chondrules and refractory inclusions in Mokoia and Allende are broadly similar in texture and mineral chemistry, but Mokoia refractory inclusions contain phyllosilicates rather than feldspathoids, and melilite-rich CAI's are more abundant in Allende.We think that most CAI's formed during the metamorphism, partial melting, and incomplete distillation of primitive dust aggregates when they were heated in the solar nebula. In the process, Ca-rich melt appears to have been physically separated from Al-rich residues, producing the observed fractionation of Ca from Al into distinct constituents of CAI's. Some CAI's may be aggregates of devitrified, amorphous metastable condensates. Inclusion matrix may have condensed from silicate-rich vapors produced during distillation. Mokoia inclusion matrix contains phyllosilicates that are probably primitive nebular material.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the effects of geology and geomorphology on surface-water/-groundwater interactions, evapotranspiration, and recharge under conditions of long-term climatic change. Our analysis uses hydrologic data from the glaciated Crow Wing watershed in central Minnesota, USA, combined with a hydrologic model of transient coupled unsaturated/saturated flow (HYDRAT2D). Analysis of historical water-table (1970–1993) and lake-level (1924–2002) records indicates that larger amplitude and longer period fluctuations occur within the upland portions of watersheds due to the response of the aquifer system to relatively short-term climatic fluctuations. Under drought conditions, lake and water-table levels fell by as much as 2–4 m in the uplands but by 1 m in the lowlands. The same pattern can be seen on millennial time scales. Analysis of Holocene lake-core records indicates that Moody Lake, located near the outlet of the Crow Wing watershed, fell by as much as 4 m between about 4400 and 7000 yr BP. During the same time, water levels in Lake Mina, located near the upland watershed divide, fell by about 15 m. Reconstructed Holocene climate as represented by HYDRAT2D gives somewhat larger drops (6 and 24 m for Moody Lake and Lake Mina, respectively). The discrepancy is probably due to the effect of three-dimensional flow. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out to study how aquifer hydraulic conductivity and land-surface topography can influence water-table fluctuations, wetlands formation, and evapotranspiration. The models were run by recycling a wet year (1985, 87 cm annual precipitation) over a 10-year period followed by 20 years of drier and warmer climate (1976, 38 cm precipitation). Model results indicated that groundwater-supported evapotranspiration accounted for as much as 12% (10 cm) of evapotranspiration. The aquifers of highest hydraulic conductivity had the least amount of groundwater-supported evapotranspiration owing to a deep water table. Recharge was even more sensitive to aquifer hydraulic conductivity, especially in the lowland regions. These findings have important implications for paleoclimatic studies, because the hydrologic response of a surface-water body will vary across the watershed to a given climate signal.  相似文献
