Geochemistry of ice-covered, meromictic Lake A in the Canadian High Arctic

The geochemical processes occurring within meromictic Lake A (maxdepth 120 m) on northern Ellesmere Island, Canada, were investigated to determinethe history of the lake and to provide a baseline for future studies. The lake contained seawaterdiluted by freshwater input that had been mixed prior to the lake's isolation from tidalaction. Input of freshwater after isolation of the lake created vertical stratification resultingin the creation of distinct oxic, suboxic and anoxic zones. Dissolved oxygen was present to 13 m,and sulphide beneath 32 m. Manganese and iron cycling dominated the redox chemistrybetween these depths. Total manganese concentrations reached 176 M, higher thanin most other natural stratified lake or marine environments.     

The NdSr isotopic correlation in mantle materials and geodynamic consequences

The neodymium-strontium isotopic correlation observed in most of the Earth mantle materials is evaluated by means of direct modelling. Several geochemical models are quantitatively developed to explain the observations. The main results of this modelling are that such a correlation is not geochemically trivial and that it corresponds to specific conditions in chemical fractionation. These specific conditions seem to be satisfied by solid-liquid partitioning in magmatic conditions. The discussion of the experimental data supports a continuous convecting-magmatic fractionation model for a large proportion of the mantle.     

87Rb-86Sr age of rocks from the Apollo 15 landing site and significance of internal isochrons

Internal isochrons for two Apollo 15 rocks give an age of(3.34 ± 0.09)and(3.46 ± 0.04) × 10⁹ years with an identical⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr initial ratio of 0.69928. Considering the possibility for the line obtained in a⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr,⁸⁷Rb/⁸⁶Sr diagram to be a mixing line, the significance of these results are discussed.     

Petrology of the mafic rocks of the Xigaze ophiolite,Tibet

The Xigaze ophiolite (Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone, Southern Tibet, China) shows an unusual crustal sequence characterized by a lack of large masses of cumulate gabbros, by dolerites intrusive throughout the whole ophiolite sequence, and by the injection of dolerites in already serpentinized peridotites. The abyssal tholeiitic nature of all the mafic rocks indicates that they have been generated at an oceanic ridge. All the geological arguments and petrological and textural data on the mafic rocks point to very low heat production and large heat losses through widespread intensive sea-water circulation, for the spreading centre in which they have been formed, in good agreement with a slow-spreading ridge origin.

Fuzzy factorial analysis of snow avalanches

The mutual influence of 21 factors pertaining to terrain, weather, forest and snowpack have been discussed by 10 experts. The semantic (nil, weak, medium, high) evaluations are translated as membership degrees of fuzzy sets, and averaged between the experts by taking their fuzzy expectation value, yielding a 21 × 21 fuzzy matrix for direct interactions. Fuzzy successive multiplications and additions of the matrix give the indirect interactions. The activity and the passivity of the factors with respect to avalanches is represented by directed weighted graphs, and the average semantic values by a 4 × 4 matrix: the activity (passivity) is weak (strong) for tree damage; medium (nil) for altitude; medium (weak) for ground shape; medium (medium) for vegetation, soil, wind, microclimate, tree type, vertical distribution and mechanics of trees, snowpack distribution and snow gliding; strong (nil) for ground inclination and exposition, weather; strong (medium) for heat, precipitation, horizontal distribution of trees, snowpack constitution and stability.     

Pyroxene geothermometry and geobarometry: experimental and thermodynamic evaluation of some subsolidus phase relations involving pyroxenes in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2

One petrogenetic grid for plagioclase-, spinel- and garnet-lherzolite analogues in the system CaO-MgO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ is presented from 1 bar to 30 kbar and 400 to 1500°C. Another grid for olivine-gabbro, spinel-gabbro and garnet-pyroxenite analogues in the same system is presented from 1 bar to 25 kbar and 500 to 1500°C. Both grids show the distribution of the mineral assemblages and the variations in the composition of clinopyroxene with temperature and pressure. They were developed by applying simple thermodynamic mixing models of clinopyroxene to experimentally determined clino-pyroxene compositions.Calcium tschermak's pyroxene (CaAl₂SiO₆) in complex CaMgSi₂O₆-CaAl₂SiO₆-Mg₂Si₂O₆ clinopyroxenes is best represented by a local charge balance mixing model where Enthalpy and entropy changes of subsolidus reactions involving variations in the CaAl₂SiO₆ and Mg₂Si₂O₆ content of clinopyroxene are interdependent due to nonideal mixing of these two end-members. CaAl₂SiO₆ can strongly reduce the mutual solubility of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene at moderate pressures and high temperatures. Failure to take this into account can result in temperature underestimates (up to 150°C) of spinel-lherzolites, garnet-pyroxenites, low pressure garnet-lherzolites, spinel-gabbros, and high pressure plagioclase-lherzolites and olivine-gabbros. However, at temperatures and pressures where the Al₂O₃ content of clinopyroxene is low (e.g. garnet-lherzolite nodules in kimberlite), the mutual solubility is adequantely represented by experimental results in the system CaO-MgO-SiO₂.
