Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is an enhanced oil recovery process for heavy oils and bitumens. Numerical simulations of this thermal process allow us to estimate the retrievable volume of oil and to evaluate the benefits of the project. As there exists a thin flow interface (compared to the reservoir dimensions), SAGD simulations are sensitive to the grid size. Thus, to obtain precise forecasts of oil production, very small-sized cells have to be used, which leads to prohibitive CPU times. To reduce these computation times, one can use an adaptive mesh refinement technique, which will only refine the grid in the interface area and use coarser cells outside. To this end, in this work, we introduce new refinement criteria, which are based on the work achieved in Kröner and Ohlberger (Math Comput 69(229):25–39, 2000) on a posteriori error estimators for finite volume schemes for hyperbolic equations. Through numerical experiments, we show that they enable us to decrease in a significant way the number of cells (and then CPU times) while maintaining a good accuracy in the results.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of natural wollastonite, diopside, enstatite, forsterite, and albite in aqueous solutions was characterized using both electrokinetic techniques and surface titrations performed for 20 min in batch reactors. Titrations performed in such reactors allow determination of both proton consumption and metal release from the mineral surface as a function of pH. The compositions, based on aqueous solution analysis, of all investigated surfaces vary dramatically with solution pH. Ca and Mg are preferentially released from the surfaces of all investigated divalent metal silicates at pH less than ∼8.5-10 but preferentially retained relative to silica at higher pH. As such, the surfaces of these minerals are Si-rich and divalent metal poor except in strongly alkaline solutions. The preferential removal of divalent cations from these surfaces is coupled to proton consumption. The number of protons consumed by the preferential removal of each divalent cation is pH independent but depends on the identity of the mineral; ∼1.5 protons are consumed by the preferential removal of each Ca atom from wollastonite, ∼3 protons are consumed by the preferential removal of each Mg or Ca atom from diopside or enstatite, and ∼4 protons are consumed by the preferential removal of each Mg from forsterite. These observations are interpreted to stem from the creation of additional ‘internal’ adsorption sites by the preferential removal of divalent metal cations which can be coupled to the condensation of partially detached Si. Similarly, Na and Al are preferentially removed from the albite surface at 2 > pH > 11; mass balance calculations suggest that three protons are consumed by the preferential removal of each Al atom from this surface over this entire pH range. Electrokinetic measurements on fresh mineral powders yield an isoelectric point (pHIEP) 2.6, 4.4, 3.0, 4.5, and <1, for wollastonite, diopside, enstatite, forsterite, and albite, respectively, consistent with the predominance of SiO2 in the surface layer of all of these multi-oxide silicates at acidic pH. Taken together, these observations suggest fundamental differences between the surface chemistry of simple versus multi-oxide minerals including (1) a dependency of the number and identity of multi-oxide silicate surface sites on the aqueous solution composition, and (2) the dominant role of metal-proton exchange reactions on the reactivity of multi-oxide mineral surfaces including their dissolution rate variation with aqueous solution composition.  相似文献

We analyzed 210Pb-dated sediment cores from four relatively shallow lakes (zmax < 10 m) in the Upper Ocklawaha River Basin, Florida, USA to compare primary producer community structure before and after anthropogenic impacts. We measured physical and chemical sediment variables including density, organic matter (OM), water-soluble phosphorus, polyphosphate (Poly-P), total P (TP), total carbon to total nitrogen mass ratios of OM (TC:TN), biogenic silica (diatoms, sponge spicules), total amorphous silica, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of bulk OM. Principal component analysis showed that diatom biogenic silica, TC:TN, Poly-P and TP displayed discernible stratigraphic changes associated with the shift in the primary producer community. We applied k-means cluster analysis to these variables to identify macrophyte-derived, transitional, and phytoplankton-derived sediments. Our approach provides an objective method for identifying sediment sources that may be applied to shallow lakes in other regions. The four study lakes shifted from a macrophyte-dominated state to a transitional state before major anthropogenic disturbances, and became phytoplankton-dominated after ~1950.  相似文献

Conventionally, a raster operation that needs to scan the entire image employs only one scanning order (i.e., single scanning order (SSO)), and the scan usually runs from upper left to lower right and row by row. We explore the idea of alternately applying multiple scanning orders (MSO) to raster operations that are based on the local direction, using the flow accumulation (FA) calculation as an example. We constructed several FA methods based on MSO, and compared them with those widely used methods. Our comparison includes experiments over digital elevation models (DEMs) of different landforms and DEMs of different resolutions. For each DEM, we calculated both single-direction FA (SD-FA) and multi-direction FA (MD-FA). In the theoretical aspect, we deducted the time complexity of an MSO sequential algorithm (MSOsq) for FA based on empirical equations in hydrology. Findings from the experiments include the following: (1) an MSO-based method is generally superior to its counterpart SSO-based method. (2) The advantage of MSO is more significant in the SD-FA calculation than in the MD-FA calculation. (3) For SD-FA, the best method among the compared methods is the one that combines the MSOsq and the depth-first algorithm. This method surpasses the commonly recommended dependency graph algorithm, in both speed and memory use. (4) The differences between the compared methods are not sensitive to specific landforms. (5) For SD-FA, the advantage of MSO-based methods is more obvious in a higher DEM resolution, but this does not apply to MD-FA.  相似文献

We present ion microprobe measurements of oxygen isotopic compositions in the deep-sea coral Lophelia pertusa. Compared to bulk skeletal aragonite fibres, the EMZ (early mineralization zone), near the inside of the calyx, was systematically depleted in 18O. Rayleigh fractionation from a semi-closed fluid reservoir does not explain this and other geochemical differences. Furthermore, pH values estimated from skeletal δ11B data are inconsistent with the idea that EMZ (or centres of calcification) 18O depletion reflects a more alkaline calcification environment. Our data, combined with microstructural and geochemical observations, indicate that the aragonitic fibres and EMZ are formed by a compartmentalized mineralization calicoblastic ectoderm, which exerts strong biological control on the composition of the skeleton. Hence, we propose a new model whereby amorphous calcium carbonates (ACC) are precursors to the EMZ, whereas the fibre precipitation is probably governed by kinetic processes.  相似文献

Motivated by radar and near-infrared data indicating that Titan’s polar lakes are extremely smooth, we consider the conditions under which a lake surface will be ruffled by wind to form capillary waves. We evaluate laboratory data on wind generation and derive, without scaling for surface tension effects, a threshold for pure methane/ethane of ∼0.5-1 m/s. However, we compute the physical properties of predicted Titan lake compositions using the National Institute for Standards Technology (NIST) code and note that dissolved amounts of C3 and C4 compounds are likely to make Titan lakes much more viscous than pure ethane or methane, even without allowing for suspended particulates which would increase the viscosity further. Wind tunnel experiments show a strong dependence of capillary wave growth on liquid viscosity, and this effect may explain the apparent absence so far of waves, contrary to prior expectations that generation of gravity waves by wind should be easy on Titan. On the other hand, we note that winds over Titan lakes predicted with the TitanWRF Global Circulation Model indicate radar observations so far have in any case been when winds have been low (∼0.5-0.7 m/s), possibly below the wave generation threshold, while peak winds during summer may reach 1-2 m/s. Thus observations of Titan’s northern lakes during the coming years by the Cassini Solstice mission offer the highest probability of observing wind-roughening of lake surfaces, while observations of Ontario Lacus in the south will likely continue to show it to be flat and smooth.  相似文献

Patterns in the spatial or temporal distribution of genotypes may be indicative of natural selection. Previous work on the woolly mammoth melanocortin-1 receptor (Mc1r) gene identified three polymorphic positions that suggest Pleistocene populations may have harboured both light- and dark-haired mammoths (Rompler et al., 2006, 313: 62). Here, we extend this work and present the first population-level analysis of a functional gene in an extinct species. We genotyped the Mc1r gene in 47 woolly mammoth samples excavated from sites across the central portion of the woolly mammoths’ former range to examine the extent of variation of this polymorphism through time and across space. Only one individual was found to be heterozygous, indicating that the frequency of the ‘light’ mutant allele was very low. We conclude that light-coloured woolly mammoths would have been very rare, and may even have been non-existent if the ‘light’ mutant allele was strongly selected against in its homozygotic form. With the increasing availability of large-scale sequencing technologies, population-level datasets capable of identifying local adaptation will become increasingly attainable.  相似文献
