The plate margin features defining the Arabian Sea Triple Junction (ASTJ) are: the Aden Ridge (AR), Sheba Ridge (SR) with
their intervening Alula-Fartak Transform (AFT), Carlsberg Ridge (CR) and Owen Fracture Zone (OFZ). Exact nature of ASTJ is
presently debated: whether it is RRF (ridge-ridge-fault) or RRR (ridge-ridge-ridge) type. A revised seismicity map for ASTJ
is given here using data for a period little more than a century. “Point density spatial statistical criterion” is applied
to short-listed 742 earthquakes (mb ≥ 4.3), 10 numbers of spatio-temporal seismic clusters are identified for ASTJ and its
arms. Relocated hypocentres help better constraining the cluster identification wherever such data exist. Seismic clusters
actually diagnose the most intense zones of strain accumulation due to far field as well as the local stress operating at
ASTJ. An earthquake swarm emanating from a prominent seismic cluster below SR provides an opportunity to investigate the pore
pressure diffusion process (due to the active source) by means of “r-t plot”. Stress and faulting pattern in the active zones
are deduced from 43 CMT solutions. While normal or lateral faulting is characteristic for these arms, an anomalous thrust
earthquake occurs in the triangular ‘Wheatley Deep’ deformation zone proximal to ASTJ. The latter appears to have formed due
to a shift of the deformational front from OFZ towards a transform that offsets SR. Though ASTJ is still in the process of
evolution, available data favour that this RRF triple junction may eventually be converted to a more stable RRR type. 相似文献

We studied a chalcopyrite from a Cu ore deposit in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, by Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature and 110 K. Supporting methods to check for sample purity and to characterize further sample properties were slow-scanning X-ray powder diffraction and optical and microprobe analyses of polished sections of selected grains. Chemical analyses obtained using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer showed the sample to consist of homogeneous and essentially stoichiometric chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Mössbauer spectra taken at both the above temperatures consist of asymmetric magnetically ordered patterns with unequal intensities of the line pairs 1–6 and 2–5, pointing to the existence of non-equivalent or multiple Fe sites. Least-squares fittings evidenced that the resonance intensity ratio of subspectrum with lower quadrupole shift (indicative of a more symmetric environment) to that with higher shift is 69:31, at room temperature, and 68:32, at 110 K. Rietveld refinement of the XRD data indicates the existence of tetragonal [a = 0.52855(1) and c = 1.0412(1) nm] and cubic [a 0 = 0.5273(2) nm] modifications in a proportion of 74:26, in good agreement with the Mössbauer data. The saturation magnetization of the sample was 32.7 J/(T kg), confirming the oxidation state of Fe as trivalent and pointing to little to no spin canting. 相似文献

An unsolved problem of regional importance for both the evolution and structure of the Northwest German Basin is the existence
or non-existence of the so-called Bramsche Massif. Explaining the nature of this massif and the cause of a related strong,
positive Bouguer anomaly (Bramsche Anomaly) is critical. In the study described here, we tested an existing “intrusion model”
against a newer “inversion model” in the southern Northwest German Basin. In the intrusion model, the strongly-positive Bouguer
anomaly represents the gravity effect of an intrusion at depths between 6 and 10 km. More recent interpretations invoke tectonic
inversion rather than intrusion to explain increased burial and the low level of hydrocarbon maturity found in boreholes.
We tested these different interpretations by constructing 3D forward density models to 15 km depth. The intrusion model was
updated and adjusted to incorporate recent data and we also modelled pre-Zechstein structures using different scenarios. The
final model has a very good fit between measured and modelled gravity fields. Based on currently available seismic and structural
models, as well as borehole density measurements, we show that the positive Bouguer anomaly cannot be modeled without a high-density,
intrusive-like body at depth. However, further in-sight into the crustal structures of the Bramsche region requires more detailed
investigations.

The evolution of porosity and changes in wave velocity in granite after high-temperature treatment has been experimentally investigated in different studies. Statistical analysis of the test results shows that there is a temperature threshold value that leads to variations in porosity and wave velocity. At a temperature that is less than 200 °C, the porosity of granite slowly increases with increases in temperature, while the wave velocity decreases. When the temperature is greater than 200 °C (especially between 400 and 600 °C), the porosity quickly increases, while the wave velocity substantially decreases. The temperature ranges of room temperature to 200 and 200–400 °C correspond to the undamaged state and the micro-damage state, respectively. The results confirm that there is an important link between the variations of physical and mechanical properties in response to thermal treatment. By studying the relationships among rock porosity, wave velocity and temperature, this provides the basis for solving multi-variable coupling problems under high temperatures for the thermal exploitation of petroleum and safe disposal of nuclear waste. 相似文献

Mt. Nyiragongo is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world for the risk associated with the propagation of lava flows.
In 2002 several vents opened along a huge system of fractures, pouring out lava which reached and destroyed a considerable
part of Goma, a town of about 500,000 inhabitants on the shore of Lake Kivu. In a companion paper (Favalli et al. in Bull
Volcanol, this issue, 2008) we employed numerical simulations of probable lava flow paths to evaluate the lava flow hazard on the flanks of the volcano,
including the neighbouring towns of Goma (DRC) and Gisenyi (Rwanda). In this paper we use numerical simulations to investigate
the possibility of significantly reducing the lava flow hazard in the city through the construction of protective barriers.
These barriers are added to the DEM of the area as additional morphological elements, and their effect is evaluated by repeating
numerical simulations with and without the presence of barriers. A parametric study on barrier location, size, shape and orientation
led to the identification of barriers which maximize protection while minimizing their impact. This study shows that the highest
hazard area corresponding to eastern Goma, which was largely destroyed by lava flows in 2002, cannot be effectively protected
from future lava flows towards Lake Kivu and should be abandoned. On the contrary, the rest of the town can be sheltered from
lava flows by means of two barriers that deviate or contain the lava within the East Goma sector. A proposal for the future
development of the town is formulated, whereby “new” Goma is completely safe from the arrival of lava flows originating from
vents outside its boundaries. The proposal minimizes the risk of further destruction in town due to future lava flows. 相似文献

Dissolved and particulate concentrations of silver in Tokyo Bay estuarine waters and Japanese rivers were determined in this
study. The dissolved silver concentrations in the surface water of Tokyo Bay range from 5.9 to 15.1 pmol kg−1, which is comparable to those in the surface water of the Japan Sea, but two or three times higher than those in the surface
water of the open ocean. However, elevated concentrations of dissolved silver are not found in Tokyo Bay compared with those
in other highly urbanized estuaries, such as San Francisco Bay (20∼243 pmol kg−1). In the Tokyo Bay estuary, silver typically exhibits non-conservative mixing behavior, which is a common feature in the
other estuaries reported previously. Dissolved silver concentrations decrease with salinity from the rivers to the mouth of
Tokyo Bay. Silver is efficiently scavenged by suspended particulates, as evidenced by the high conditional distribution coefficients
for silver throughout the estuary (log Kd > 5.0 ± 0.6). The silver fluxes into Tokyo Bay via inflowing rivers and atmospheric deposition were estimated as 83 kg y−1 and 15 kg y−1, respectively. A simple budget calculation shows that the silver supplied from rivers and atmosphere must be rapidly scavenged

This research is focused on evaluating heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) uptake and removal by Eleocharis ovata, Cyperus manimae, Typha dominguensis, and Pteridium aquilinum in a natural wetland impacted by mining activities. We analyzed heavy metals content and distribution in native plants, soils, and water of a semipermanent natural wetland in Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero, and we also determined the physicochemical characteristics of the water. Translocation factor (TF) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) were evaluated. Results showed that physical and chemical conditions are favorable for plants development. Correlation analysis showed a good and positive relation (0.95) between Cu and Pb in soils and plants. In the analyzed matrices: Zn (0.62–2.20 mg/L) exceeded the permissible limits in water, high concentrations of Pb and Zn (26.57–525.67 and 266.67–983.33 mg/kg, respectively) were detected in the studied soils, and Pb exceeded the normal range for E. ovata and P. aquilinum in the analyzed plants. Uptake of heavy metals in the tissues of different species was found in the following order: root > leaf. Data of TF and BCF showed that E. ovata is a tolerant plant with respect to heavy metals exposure since TF value was greater than 1. In 2007, the CNA Military Advisory Board (MAB), an expert panel composed of 11 retired admirals and generals from the United
States, identified climate change as a “threat multiplier” for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world.

2007)The Department of Defense reached a similar conclusion in last year’s Quadrennial Defense Review–a legislatively mandated
analysis of the Defense Department’s strategy and priorities. This document frames the long-term course for policy decision-making
at the highest levels. The reports demonstrate that climate change and energy are now mainstream elements of national security
planning, and can be assessed within the frameworks used to evaluate other threats, risks, and responses. However, the exact
magnitude of the threat posed by climate change is difficult to calibrate in part because the language used by scientists
to predict uncertainty and the confidence levels of judgments is not sufficiently clear. The defense community has a vast
amount of experience exploring and dealing with uncertainty. Scientists trying to better describe the effects of climate change
may be able to draw lessons from the defense community’s approach to uncertainty including how to better communicate findings

Heat wave of 2015 over India, a natural disaster with 2500 human deaths, was studied to understand the characteristics, associated atmospheric circulation patterns and to evaluate its predictability. Although temperatures are highest in May over India, occurrence of heat wave conditions over southeast coastal parts of India in May 2015 had been unanticipated. Analyses revealed that isolated region of Andhra Pradesh (AP) had experienced severe heat wave conditions during May 23–27, 2015, with temperatures above 42 °C and the sudden escalation by 7–10 °C within a short span of 2–3 days. Short-range weather predictions with Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model at 3-km resolution, up to 72-h lead time, have been found accurate with statistical metrics of small mean absolute error and root-mean-square error and high index of agreement confirming the predictability of the heat wave evolution. Analyses have indicated that regional atmospheric pressure disparities within the Eurasia region, i.e., increased pressure gradient between the Middle East and India, had been responsible for increased northwest wind flow over to northwest India and to southeast India which have advected higher temperatures. Estimates of warm air advection have shown heat accumulation over AP region, due to sea breeze effect. The study led to the conclusion that changing pressure gradients between Middle East and India, enhancement of northwest wind flow with warm air advection and sea breeze effect along southeast coast blocking the free flow have contributed to the observed heat wave episode over coastal Andhra Pradesh. 相似文献
