We present a submillimetre continuum survey for accretion discs around seven embedded protostars in the Perseus and Serpens molecular clouds. Observations were made at frequencies between 339 and 357 GHz using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope–Caltech Submillimeter Observatory single-baseline interferometer on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. All the objects in our survey show compact dust emission on scales ≲1 arcsec, assumed to arise in a circumstellar accretion disc. We compare the properties of this compact component with evolutionary indicators, such as the ratio of compact to extended emission, and bolometric temperature. We find that discs of mass ∼0.01 M have formed by the Class 0 stage, and that similar mass discs are observed in Class I and Class II sources. A trend is observed whereby the ratio of compact to extended emission in our sources increases from Class 0 to Class II sources. For three of the objects in the survey, NGC 1333 IRAS2:CR1 and SVS13 in Perseus, and FIRS1 in Serpens, the signal-to-noise ratio is sufficient to allow us to model the brightness distributions with elliptical Gaussian and power-law disc models. The Gaussian fits give semimajor half-power radii of approximately 90 to 140 au, at the assumed distance of 350 pc to the Perseus and Serpens clouds.  相似文献

Summary This paper focuses on the ways in which demographic, social and environmental factors, combined with differential emphases on priorities and patterns of spending between local authority jurisdictions, are contributing to a changing spatial geography of caring. This is examined firstly by highlighting how macro factors contribute to a restructured landscape of care, and secondly by examining the personal geographies of carers located within the Scottish environment. Finally, the paper suggests that as care moves from institutional space to the homespace, it may be creating a blurring of the boundaries between what has traditionally been public/institutional space, and the homespace. 1  相似文献

As opposed to ocean crustal drilling that often yields a discontinuous core, ophiolites provide a unique opportunity to study continuous sections of oceanic basalts. In order to provide high frequency constraints on the construction of the upper oceanic crust, a continuous 280 m thick volcanic transect was sampled in the Semail ophiolite in Oman. The analyzed section is located in the Sarami Massif, in the central part of the ophiolite, and exposed along Wadi Shaffan. A multidisciplinary study was carried out after sampling in the field. Core measurements including porosity, grain density, compressional velocity, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity for over 100 samples from this transect have been made. Geochemical analyses including major, trace and Rare Earth Elements were also performed on 23 selected samples from this transect. The Wadi Shaffan transect appears as composed of two main petrological and geochemical members providing the main lithostratigraphic signal. The boundary between the two sequences is marked by the presence of a massive flow unit equating to the most primitive lava and across which significant changes in mineralogy and texture are observed. The physical properties equally record significant changes. In all, the section is characterized by chemical compositions coherent with that of V1-Geotime volcanism and appears as built through two main sequences of volcanic activity. The magnetic susceptibility profile correlated to geochemical variations present the most detailed evolution allowing to individualize a succession of at least 4 volcanic phases. These phases are interpreted as magmatic cycles characterized by differentiation processes, allowing one to place high frequency constraints on the volcanic behavior of fast spreading ridges. Some of the physical properties also reflect this series of differentiation trends, as noticed in the past from downhole measurements recorded in the context of deep ocean drilling into the crust.  相似文献

Changes in the water table level result in variable water saturation and variable hydrological fluxes at the interface between the unsaturated and saturated zone. This may influence the transport and fate of contaminants in the subsurface. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of a decreasing and an increasing water table on solute transport. We conducted tracer experiments at downward flow conditions in laboratory columns filled with two different uniform porous media under static and transient flow conditions either increasing or decreasing the water table. Tracer breakthrough curves were simulated using a mobile–immobile transport model. The resulting transport parameters were compared to identify dominant transport processes. Changes in the water table level affected dispersivities and mobile water fractions depending on the direction of water table movement and the grain size of the porous media. In fine glass beads, the water flow velocity was similar to the decline rate of the water table, and the mobile water fraction was decreased compared with steady‐state saturated conditions. However, immobile water was negligible. In coarse glass beads, water flow was faster because of fingered flow in the unsaturated part, and the mobile water fraction was smaller than in the fine material. Here, a rising water table led to an even smaller mobile water fraction and increased solute spreading because of diffusive interaction with immobile water. We conclude that changes of the water table need to be considered to correctly simulate transport in the subsurface at the transition of the unsaturated–saturated zone. To constrain the origins of meteoritic nanodiamonds, the abundance ratios of stable C isotopes in acid residues from the carbonaceous chondritic meteorite Allende CV3 were measured using coordinated atom‐probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We combined our data with previously published APT data. A statistical analysis of this combined data set suggests an upper bound of 1 in 102 on the subpopulation that could have a large isotopic enrichment in 13C relative to 12C, consistent with the possible detection by secondary ion mass spectrometry of a similar enrichment in a 1 in 105 fraction, abundant enough to account for the Xe‐HL anomalous isotopic component carried by the acid residues. Supernovae are believed to be the source of Xe‐HL, leading to the mystery of why all other supernova minerals do not carry Xe‐HL. The lack of Xe‐HL in low‐density disordered supernova graphite suggests that the isotopically anomalous component is the nanodiamonds, but the disordered C in the residue is not ruled out. We discuss possible origins of the disordered C and implications of our results for proposed formation scenarios for nanodiamonds. At least 99% of the meteoritic acid residue exhibits no unambiguous evidence of presolar formation, although production with solar isotope ratios in asymptotic giant branch stars is not ruled out. Comparison of TEM and APT results indicates that a minority of the APT reconstructions may preferentially sample disordered C rather than nanodiamonds. If this is the case, a presolar origin for a larger fraction of the nanodiamonds remains possible.  相似文献

Recent studies have highlighted the nonlinear rainfall response to El Niño sea surface temperature (SST) events in the Indo-Pacific region and how this response might change over coming decades. Here we investigate the response to La Niña SST anomalies with and without global warming by performing idealised SST-forced experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model. The La Niña SST anomaly is multiplied by a factor \(1 \le \alpha \le 4\) and added to climatological SSTs. Similar experiments using El Niño SST anomalies were previously performed, in which large nonlinearities in the precipitation response were evident. We find that: (i) Under current climatic conditions, as \(\alpha\) increases, the precipitation responds in three ways: the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) dries and moves poleward, the maximum precipitation along the equator moves west, and the South Pacific convergence zone (SPCZ) narrows, intensifies, and elongates. For weak ( \(\alpha = 1\) ) La Niña events, the precipitation anomalies approximately mirror those from the El Niño events along the ITCZ and SPCZ, though there are some marked differences in the central-eastern Pacific. For stronger La Niña events ( \(\alpha > 1\) ), precipitation responds nonlinearly to SST anomalies, though the nonlinearities are smaller and differ spatially from the nonlinearities in the El Niño runs. (ii) The addition of a global warming SST pattern increases rainfall in the western Pacific and SPCZ, enhances the narrowing of the SPCZ, and increases the nonlinear response in the western Pacific. However, large La Niña events reduce the impact of global warming along the central-eastern equatorial Pacific as the global warming and La Niña SST anomalies have opposite signs in that region. (iii) The response to La Niña SST anomalies is driven primarily by changes in the atmospheric circulation, whereas the response to the global warming SST pattern is mainly driven by increases in atmospheric moisture. (iv) Large changes in La Niña-driven rainfall anomalies can occur in response to global warming, even if the La Nina SST anomalies relative to the warmer background state are completely unchanged.  相似文献

Maximum likelihood factor analysis (MLFA) is applied to investigate the variables of monthly Tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures (SST) from Niño 1+2, Niño 3, Niño 3.4, and Niño 4 and precipitation over New South Wales and Queensland of eastern Australia, Kalimantan Island of Indonesia, and California and Oregon of the west coast of the United States. The monthly data used were from 1950 to 1999. The November-February SST with time leads of 0, 1, 2, and 3 months to precipitation are considered for both El Niño warm phases and non El Niño seasons. Interpretations of the factor loadings are made to diagnose relationships between the SST and precipitation variables. For El Niño signals, the rotated FA loadings can efficiently group the SST and precipitation variables with interpretable physical meanings. When the time lag is 0 or 1 month, the November–February El Niño SST explains much of the drought signals over eastern Australia and Kalimantan. However, when the time lag is 2 or 3 months, the same SST cannot adequately explain the precipitation during January–May over the two regions. Communality results of five factors for precipitation indicate nearly 100% explanation of variances for Queensland and California, but the percentages are reduced to only about 30% for Oregon and Kalimantan. Factor scores clearly identify the strongest El Niño relevant to precipitation variations. Principal component factor analysis (PCFA) is also investigated, and its results are compared with MLFA. The comparison indicates that MLFA can better group SST data relevant to precipitation. The residuals of MLFA are always smaller than the PCFA. Thus, MLFA may become a useful tool for improving potential predictability of precipitation from SST predictors.  相似文献
