Nearly 200 analyses of meltwaters, ice and snow from three alpine glacial sites in carbonate terrain are summarized and discussed in terms of sources of solutes and kinetic controls on the progress of weathering reactions. Most data derive from the Swiss Glacier de Tsanfleuron which is based on Cretaceous and Tertiary pure and impure limestones. Two other sites (Marmolada, Italian Dolomites and the Saskatchewan Glacier, Alberta) are based on a mixed calcitic-dolomitic substrate. Most solutes originate from carbonate dissolution; moreover, where pyrite is present its oxidation supplies significant sulphate and forces more dissolution of carbonate. The ratios Sr2+/Ca2+ and Mg2+/Ca2+ are much higher in Tsanfleuron melt-waters than local bedrock, a phenomenon that can be reproduced in the laboratory at small percentages of dissolution. These anomalous ratios are attributed to incongruent dissolution of traces of the metastable carbonates Mg-calcite and aragonite. These phases also provide Na+ to solution. K+ is argued to originate mainly by ion-exchange on clays with solute Ca2+. Quartz and very minor feldspar dissolution are also inferred. Locally enhanced input from atmospheric sources is recognized by high Cl? and associated Na+. The progress of weathering reactions has been evaluated by the trends in the data, computer modelling and some simple laboratory experiments. The most dilute samples show a trend towards removal of CO2 to low partial pressures (c. 10?5.5 atmospheres), reflecting initially rapid carbonate dissolution and relatively slow dissolution of gaseous CO2. Later addition of atmospheric CO2 or acid from pyrite oxidation allows further carbonate dissolution, but solutions show a wide range of saturations, and CO2 pressures as high as 10?2.2 where pyrite oxidation is important. In a carbonate terrain, measurement of electroconductivity (corrected to 25°C) and alkalinity in the field allows the following preliminary deductions (where meq stands for milliequivalents): where S is the minimum meq(Ca2+ + Mg2+) produced by simple dissolution of carbonate unconnected with pyrite oxidation. As with any proxy method, these deductions do not remove the need for chemical analysis of waters in a given study area.  相似文献

Shortly after the discovery of an oil and gas field, an initial estimate is usually made of the ultimate recovery of the field. With the passage of time, this initial estimate is almost always revised upward. The phenomenon of the growth of the expected ultimate recovery of a field, which is known as field growth, is important to resource assessment analysts for several reasons. First, field growth is the source of a large part of future additions to the inventory of proved reserves of crude oil and natural gas in most petroliferous areas of the world. Second, field growth introduces a large negative bias in the forecast of the future rates of discovery of oil and gas fields made by discovery process models. In this study, the growth in estimated ultimate recovery of oil and gas in fields made up of sandstone reservoirs formed in a complex depositional environment (Frio strand plain exploration play) is examined. The results presented here show how the growth of oil and gas fields is tied directly to the architectural element of the shoreline processes and tectonics that caused the deposition of the individual sand bodies hosting the producible hydrocarbon.  相似文献

Planning and development experiences in Guyana's coastal zone have evolved from being individualistic, ill-conceived, uncoordinated and theoretically unsound to become more systematic, integrated and practical. After presenting an overview of the efforts made by the early European settlers to make the below sea level, and flood prone coastal zone habitable and cultivable, the paper analyses the planning experiences in the post-emancipation and post Second World War periods. Analysis of the Black Bush Polder project reveals both the positive and negative experiences of policy and planning strategies.Although planners have acquired the experiential knowledge that water control is necessary for coastal development and they have attempted to develop scientific plans, the paper, nevertheless, claims that coastal residents are becoming disenchanted with the escalating and aggravating water control problems. With the planning experience considered as being neither disappointing nor successful the paper concludes that 90% of the country's population will continue living in the coastal zone given rehabilitation and modernization of the water control infrastructure, and implementation of better policy, planning and management strategies.  相似文献

We implement a geographic information system (GIS) to map surficial geologic habitats (SGH) with varying scales at Nehalem Bank, Oregon, USA. Geologic interpretation was first used to produce a regional-scale SGH map of mega habitats. Local-scale algorithmic classification techniques were then implemented where data density and richness permitted the mapping of meso (10 m-1 km) macro scale (1-10 m) habitat features. We use a ranked-(data) density approach to assess the distribution and quality of input data for the regional SGH map. We then apply a virtual reference dataset and error matrix technique to assess the thematic accuracy of local-scale maps.  相似文献

Recent data on the sources of organic carbon buried in the ocean have emphasized the probable importance of terrigenous organic matter in burial budgets of deltaic depocenters. The many markers used to assess relative importance of marine vs. terrestrial sources each have ambiguities. We use the ratio of bromine to organic carbon (Br:OC) as a source indicator for organic matter in the Mississippi delta. Progressive increases in bromine concentrations from the river to the slope indicate increasing content of marine-derived organic matter. Quantitative estimates of marine vs. terrigenous organic matter using Br:OC ratios in a two-endmember mixing model are consistent with recent estimates using a combination of three other source markers [Gordon, E.S., Goñi, M.A. 2003. Sources and distribution of terrigenous organic matter delivered by the Atchafalaya River to sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 67:2359–2375]. The Br:OC vs. δ13C relationship indicates seaward increase in δ13C without proportionate incorporation of marine organic matter, consistent with recent arguments that isotopically depleted terrestrial detritus derived from C3 plants is separated from C4-derived terrigenous organic matter during transport. Decreasing Br:OC ratios downcore at many sites that have significant amounts of marine organic matter indicate that the marine organic matter is preferentially lost during burial diagenesis. This preferential loss constrains the contribution of organic matter burial in deltaic environments to global removal of Br.  相似文献

Abstract Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata have been studied primarily in inshore, shallow‐water areas. However, they are abundant in deeper waters on the Florida gulf‐coast shelf and seem important components of the benthic communities there. Lytechinus variegatus occurs alone on sand bottoms and A. punctulata occurs alone on rubble bottoms in these deeper waters. The species also co‐occur there on ­heterogeneous bottoms, each in a distinct microhabitat with A. punctulata on rubble and L. variegatus on surrounding sand. Characteristics of the sea urchins in these different deeper‐water habitat types and at one nearshore site with a heterogeneous rubble‐sand bottom were compared. Over the 2‐year study, offshore individuals of both species had low gut and gonad indices and the maximum size of individuals did not change. This suggests food limitation and low production. Offshore, A. punctulata had a higher Aristotle's lantern index and lower gut and gonad indices in populations where it ­co‐occurred with L. variegatus compared to populations where it occurred alone. The ­Aristotle's lantern index of L. variegatus did not differ among the offshore sites. Neither species seemed food limited at the nearshore site. Although productivity is lower at the offshore sites, both species extend their distribution and reproduction potential by existing there.  相似文献

Finding the right jobs-housing balance has long been an important concern for urban planners. More recently, attention has turned to jobs-housing fit – the extent to which housing price is well matched to local job quality. Prior analyses have been constrained by a lack of local data on job quality, making it difficult to identify the geography and scale of the problem. We introduce a new methodology for calculating the low-wage jobs-housing fit at both a jurisdiction and neighborhood scale that was designed in collaboration with affordable housing advocates and has been directly applied in urban planning and affordable housing policy efforts. Low-wage fit is particularly important because of ongoing difficulties with affordable housing provision and the disproportionate benefits of reducing transportation costs for low-income earners. We use the calculated metric at both a city and neighborhood scale to identify what can be learned from a low-wage jobs-housing fit metric that is not evident in traditional measures of jobs-housing balance. In contrast to jobs-housing balance, the low-wage fit analysis clearly highlights those jurisdictions and neighborhoods where there is a substantial shortage of affordable housing in relation to the number of low-wage jobs. Because of the geographic coverage of the data sources used, the results can be widely applied across the United States by affordable housing advocates, land-use planners, and policy makers.  相似文献

In this study, the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model is adapted to benefit from a broad range of distance metrics, where it is demonstrated that a well-chosen distance metric can improve model performance. How to choose or define such a distance metric is key, and in this respect, a ‘Minkowski approach’ is proposed that enables the selection of an optimum distance metric for a given GWR model. This approach is evaluated within a simulation experiment consisting of three scenarios. The results are twofold: (1) a well-chosen distance metric can significantly improve the predictive accuracy of a GWR model; and (2) the approach allows a good approximation of the underlying ‘optimal distance metric’, which is considered useful when the ‘true’ distance metric is unknown.  相似文献

Manganese (Mn) and rare-earth elements (REEs) in a stalagmite (SJ3) collected from Central China were analyzed, using an ICP-MS method for the precise determination of > 40 trace elements in geological samples by enriched-isotope internal standardization. Unlike speleothem Mn and REEs investigated by cathodoluminescence, which may be incorporated into crystal lattice, the Mn and REEs analyzed in SJ3 should come largely from colloidal and particle phases in groundwater and may be associated with non-carbonate inclusions. The Mn and REEs in SJ3 vary significantly during the period between 20 and 10 ka. These elements show remarkable increases since  14.5 ka, suggesting enhanced weathering of the overlying soil layer and the host rock since the onset of the last deglaciation and the strengthening of the Asian summer monsoon. In addition, the Mn and REEs in SJ3 display significant centennial fluctuations which may reflect groundwater dynamics.  相似文献

Proglacial lakes, formed during retreat of the Laurentide ice sheet, evolved quickly as outlets became ice-free and the earth deformed through glacial isostatic adjustment. With high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and GIS methods, it is possible to reconstruct the evolution of surface hydrology. When a DEM deforms through time as predicted by our model of viscoelastic earth relaxation, the entire surface hydrologic system with its lakes, outlets, shorelines and rivers also evolves without requiring assumptions of outlet position. The method is applied to proglacial Lake Oshkosh in Wisconsin (13,600 to 12,900 cal yr BP). Comparison of predicted to observed shoreline tilt indicates the ice sheet was about 400 m thick over the Great Lakes region. During ice sheet recession, each of the five outlets are predicted to uplift more than 100 m and then subside approximately 30 m. At its maximum extent, Lake Oshkosh covered 6600 km2 with a volume of 111 km3. Using the Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System model, flow velocities during glacial outburst floods up to 9 m/s and peak discharge of 140,000 m3/s are predicted, which could drain 33.5 km3 of lake water in 10 days and transport boulders up to 3 m in diameter.  相似文献
