Subsea-floor replacement in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent research on volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VMS) deposits indicates that syngenetic subsea-floor replacement ores form an important component of many deposits. In the context of VMS deposits, subsea-floor replacement can be defined as the syn-volcanic formation of sulfide minerals within pre-existing volcanic or sedimentary deposits by infiltration and precipitation in open spaces (fractures, inter- and intra-granular porosity) as well as replacement of solid materials. There are five criteria for distinguishing subsea-floor replacement in massive sulfide deposits: (1) mineralized intervals are enclosed within rapidly emplaced volcanic or sedimentary facies (lavas, intrusions, subaqueous mass-flow deposits, pyroclastic fallout); (2) relics of the host facies occur within the mineral deposit; (3) replacement fronts occur between the mineral deposit and the host lithofacies; (4) the mineral deposit is discordant to bedding; and (5) strong hydrothermal alteration continues into the hanging wall without an abrupt break in intensity. Criteria 1–3 are diagnostic of replacement, whereas criteria 4 and 5 may suggest replacement but are not alone diagnostic. Because clastic sulfide ores contain accessory rock fragments collected by the parent sediment gravity flow(s) during transport, criteria 2 can only be applied to massive, semi-massive, disseminated or vein style deposits, and not clastic ores. The spectrum of VMS deposit types includes deposits that have accumulated largely subsea-floor, and others in which sedimentation and volcanism were synchronous with hydrothermal activity, and precipitation of sulfides occurred at and below the sea floor over the life of the hydrothermal system. Deposits that formed largely subsea-floor are mainly hosted by syn-eruptive or post-eruptive volcaniclastic facies (gravity flow deposits, water-settled fall, autoclastic breccia). However, some subsea-floor replacement VMS deposits are hosted by lavas and syn-volcanic intrusions (sills, domes, cryptodomes). Burial of sea-floor massive sulfide by lavas or sediment gravity flow deposits can interrupt sea-floor mineralization and promote subsea-floor replacement and zone-refining.The distance below the sea floor at which infiltration and replacement took place is rarely well constrained, with published estimates ranging from less than 1 to more than 500 m, but mainly in the range 10–200 m. The upper few tens to hundreds of metres in the volcano-sedimentary pile are the favoured position for replacement, as clastic facies are wet, porous and poorly consolidated in this zone, and at greater depths become progressively more compacted, dewatered, altered, and less amenable to large scale infiltration and replacement by hydrothermal fluids. Furthermore, sustained mixing between the upwelling hydrothermal fluid and cold seawater is regarded as a major cause of sulfide precipitation in VMS systems, and this mixing process generally becomes less effective with increasing depth in the volcanic pile. The relative importance of subsea-floor replacement in VMS systems is related principally to four factors: the permeability and porosity patterns of host lithofacies, sedimentation rate, the relative ease of replacement of host lithofacies (especially glassy materials) and early formed alteration minerals during hydrothermal attack, and physiochemical characteristics of the hydrothermal fluid.  相似文献

Coarse, co-ignimbrite lithic breccia, Ebx, occurs at the base of ignimbrite E, the most voluminous and widespread unit of the Kos Plateau Tuff (KPT) in Greece. Similar but generally less coarse-grained basal lithic breccias (Dbx) are also associated with the ignimbrites in the underlying D unit. Ebx shows considerable lateral variations in texture, geometry and contact relationships but is generally less than a few metres thick and comprises lithic clasts that are centimetres to a few metres in diameter in a matrix ranging from fines bearing (F2: 10 wt.%) to fines poor (F2: 0.1 wt.%). Lithic clasts are predominantly vent-derived andesite, although clasts derived locally from the underlying sedimentary formations are also present. There are no proximal exposures of KPT. There is a highly irregular lower erosional contact at the base of ignimbrite E at the closest exposures to the inferred vent, 10–14 km from the centre of the inferred source, but no Ebx was deposited. From 14 to <20 km from source, Ebx is present over a planar erosional contact. At 16 km Ebx is a 3-m-thick, coarse, fines-poor lithic breccia separated from the overlying fines-bearing, pumiceous ignimbrite by a sharp contact. This grades downcurrent into a lithic breccia that comprises a mixture of coarse lithic clasts, pumice and ash, or into a thinner one-clast-thick lithic breccia that grades upward into relatively lithic-poor, pumiceous ignimbrite. Distally, 27 to <36 km from source Ebx is a finer one-clast-thick lithic breccia that overlies a non-erosional base. A downcurrent change from strongly erosional to depositional basal contacts of Ebx dominantly reflects a depletive pyroclastic density current. Initially, the front of the flow was highly energetic and scoured tens of metres into the underlying deposits. Once deposition of the lithic clasts began, local topography influenced the geometry and distribution of Ebx, and in some cases Ebx was deposited only on topographic crests and slopes on the lee-side of ridges. The KPT ignimbrites also contain discontinuous lithic-rich layers within texturally uniform pumiceous ignimbrite. These intra-ignimbrite lithic breccias are finer grained and thinner than the basal lithic breccias and overlie non-erosional basal contacts. The proportion of fine ash within the KPT lithic breccias is heterogeneous and is attributed to a combination of fluidisation within the leading part of the flow, turbulence induced locally by interaction with topography, flushing by steam generated by passage of pyroclastic density currents over and deposition onto wet mud, and to self-fluidisation accompanying the settling of coarse, dense lithic clasts. There are problems in interpreting the KPT lithic breccias as conventional co-ignimbrite lithic breccias. These problems arise in part from the inherent assumption in conventional models that pyroclastic flows are highly concentrated, non-turbulent systems that deposit en masse. The KPT coarse basal lithic breccias are more readily interpreted in terms of aggradation from stratified, waning pyroclastic density currents and from variations in lithic clast supply from source. By using two spacecraft equipped with multi-bandpass X-ray telescopes, it is possible to obtain direct 3-dimensional morphology of coronal structures which is essential for understanding the energetics and dynamics of the solar atmosphere. X-ray observations taken only in orbit about the Earth are inadequate to fully resolve the 3-dimensional nature of the solar corona. These Earth-orbit observations produce 2-dimensional images and an appropriate model must be included to derive the 3-dimensional structures from the line-of-sight information. Stereoscopic observations from space will remove this limitation and are needed if we are to improve our knowledge of the 3-dimensional morphology of the corona.Several important points regarding a stereoscopic mission are investigated and illustrated using model coronal flux tubes and image-rendering techniques. Synthesized images are formed by integrating the emission from volume elements along the line-of-sight path through a 3-dimensional volume in which a set of model flux tubes are located. The flux tubes are defined by (1) a plasma model defining the emissivity for a specific density, temperature, and pressure distribution, and (2) a magnetic field model from which a set of field lines are selected to define the geometry of the flux tubes. The field lines are used to define the flux-tube volume by assuming an initial base radius and conservation of flux. An effective instrumental spectral-response function is folded into the integration. Analysis of pairs of these synthesized images with various angular perspectives are used to investigate the effect of angular separation on mission objectives. The resulting images and analysis provide guidelines for developing a stereoscopic mission. Our study produced four important results, namely: (1) An angular separation of 30 degrees maximizes the scientific return by direct triangulation analysis because of the tradeoff between increased line-of-sight resolution of position and decreased recognition of individual loop structures arising from the overlapping of multiple loops with increasing angular separation. (2) The analysis benefits from the use of time-differential images to select flux tubes from the collection of numerous overlapping systems by selecting only recently heated or cooled flux tubes. (3) An analysis needs to be developed for algebraic reconstruction techniques applying a priori information, specific to the solar coronal structures, i.e., flux-tube continuity, maximum emission strength, non-negative emission, previous history, and maximum gradients of emission. (4) An analysis strategy combining triangulation, modeling techniques, and algebraic restoration is necessary to derive a complete understanding of the 3-dimensional morphology of the magnetic field. In the same way that helioseismology is classical viewing of the Sun with a tailored set of analysis tools for probing the interior of the Sun, heliostereoscopy is classical viewing of the X-ray emitting corona and requires a tailored set of analysis tools to deduce the true 3-dimensional structure of the corona.  相似文献

The spatial variability and co-variability of two different types of remote sensing derivatives that portray vegetation and geomorphic patterns are analyzed in the context of estimating regional-scale CO2 flux from land surfaces in the arctic tundra. For a study area encompassing the Kuparuk River watershed of the North Slope of Alaska, we compare satellite-derived maps of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) generated at two different spatial resolutions to a map of vegetation types derived by image classification of data from the Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS). Mean values of NDVI for each cover type stratum are unique (with the exception of moist acidic tundra and shrubland types). Based on analysis of semi-variograms generated for SPOT-NDVI data, most of the vegetation cover and landform features of this arctic tundra landscape have spatial dimensions of less than 1 km. Thaw lakes on the coastal plain and glacial depositional landforms, such as moraines in the foothills, seem to be the largest features, with vegetation units having dimensions no larger than 700 m. Frequency distributions of NDVI and vegetation types extracted for sampling transects flown by an aircraft sensing CO2 flux, relative to distributions for the entire Kuparuk River watershed, suggest a slight sampling bias towards greater cover of mesic wet sedge tundra and thaw lakes and associated lower NDVI values. The regional pattern of NDVI for the North Slope of Alaska corresponds primarily to differences between the two major physiographic provinces of this region.  相似文献

High-K mafic alkalic lavas (5.4 to 3.2 wt% K2O) from Deep Springs Valley, California define good correlations of increasing incompatible element (e.g., Sr, Zr, Ba, LREE) and compatible element contents (e.g., Ni, Cr) with increasing MgO. Strontium and Nd isotope compositions are also correlated with MgO; 87Sr/86Sr ratios decrease and ɛNd values increase with decreasing MgO. The Sr and Nd isotope compositions of these lavas are extreme compared to most other continental and oceanic rocks; 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.7121 to 0.7105 and ɛNd values range from −16.9 to −15.4. Lead isotope ratios are relatively constant, 206Pb/204Pb ∼17.2, 207Pb/204Pb ∼15.5, and 208Pb/204Pb ∼38.6. Depleted mantle model ages calculated using Sr and Nd isotopes imply that the reservoir these lavas were derived from has been distinct from the depleted mantle reservoir since the early Proterozoic. The Sr-Nd-Pb isotope variations of the Deep Springs Valley lavas are unique because they do not plot along either the EM I or EM II arrays. For example, most basalts that have low ɛNd values and unradiogenic 206Pb/204Pb ratios have relatively low 87Sr/86Sr ratios (the EM I array), whereas basalts with low ɛNd values and high 87Sr/86Sr ratios have radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb ratios (the EM II array). High-K lavas from Deep Springs Valley have EM II-like Sr and Nd isotope compositions, but EM I-like Pb isotope compositions. A simple method for producing the range of isotopic and major- and trace-element variations in the Deep Springs Valley lavas is by two-component mixing between this unusual K-rich mantle source and a more typical depleted mantle basalt. We favor passage of MORB-like magmas that partially fused and were contaminated by potassic magmas derived from melting high-K mantle veins that were stored in the lithospheric mantle. The origin of the anomalously high 87Sr/86Sr and 208Pb/204Pb ratios and low ɛNd values and 206Pb/204Pb ratios requires addition of an old component with high Rb/Sr and Th/Pb ratios but low Sm/Nd and U/Pb ratios into the mantle source region from which these basalts were derived. This old component may be sediments that were introduced into the mantle, either during Proterozoic subduction, or by foundering of Proterozoic age crust into the mantle at some time prior to eruption of the lavas. A detailed study of a small hill in NE Mojave Desert in eastern California was conducted to elucidate the effect of climate on the variations in soil erosion rates through Holocene. Field surveys and sampling were carried out to obtain information on topography, geomorphology, soil and vegetation conditions, seismic refraction, sediment deposition, and hillslope processes. Integration of this information allowed reconstruction of the hill topography at the end of the Pleistocene, deduction of the evolution of the hill from the end of the Pleistocene to the present, and estimation of total soil losses resulting from various hillslope processes. The estimates are consistent with the premise that early Holocene climate change resulted in vegetation change, soil destabilization, and topographic roughening. Current, very slow, hillslope transport rates (e.g., 5 mm ky−1 by rodent burrowing, a presently important transport form) appear inconsistent with the inferred total soil loss rate (31 mm ky−1). Packrat midden studies imply that the NE Mojave Desert experienced enhanced monsoonal precipitation in the early Holocene, presumably accentuating soil loss. Water erosion on one slope of the hill was simulated using Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP), a process-based erosion model, using 4 and 6 ky of precipitation input compatible with an appropriate monsoonal climate and the present climate, respectively. The WEPP-predicted soil losses for the chosen slope were compatible with inferred soil losses. Identification of two time periods within the Holocene with distinct erosion characteristics may provide new insight into the current state of Mojave Desert landform evolution.  相似文献

Aquifer properties can be evaluated by monitoring artificially stimulated fluid movements between wells, if the fluid is heated. Changes in the temperature profile recorded in observation wells indicate the flow path of the heated fluid, which in effect acts as a tracer. A fluid-flow experiment in the Cretaceous Dakota Formation at the Hodgeman County site, west-central Kansas, demonstrated the advantage of using the distributed optical-fiber temperature sensing method for monitoring transient temperature conditions in this hydrological application. The fluid flow in the aquifer was increased by producing water from a pumping well and injecting heated water in an injection well 13 m (43 ft) distant from the pumping well. The time-temperature series data obtained and compared with results from previous pumping tests point to interwell heterogeneity of the aquifer and to a zone in the sandstone aquifer of high hydraulic conductivity. However, the experiment would have allowed further clarification of aquifer heterogeneity and thermal properties if at least one observation well had been present between the injection and production wells. Spherulitic pseudotachylytes from the Arunta Block formed by frictional fusion of mylonitic parent rocks during high-level reactivation of a previously ductile fault zone. Fusion occurred preferentially in mica-rich domains due to release of water through disruption of the mica lattice by frictional sliding. This generated selective localised melting of mica during frictional heating, with the production of initial pseudotachylyte melts enriched in water and ferromagnesian components. Subsequent fusion of adjacent salic phases, promoted by the high water content of the existing melt, would tend to shift the trend of later melts towards a total melt composition. Therefore, under conditions of frictional sliding, fusion appears to be favoured in crystalline quartzofeldspathic rocks possessing both a high shear strength, and a significant water content locked up in the lattices of hydrous minerals, principally biotite. The presence or pre-existence of glass in many pseudotachylytes demands that they cooled in a near-surface environment, i.e. at depths of less than about 5 km. Thus glassy pseudotachylytes must postdate associated mylonite series rocks, generally forming subsequent to exhumation of the mylonites to a higher level in the crust. Some non-glassy pseudotachylytes, however, may possibly form towards the end of movements in a ductile regime, as strain hardening sets in.  相似文献
