We present detailed science cases that a large fraction of the Indian AGN community is interested in pursuing with the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA). These interests range from understanding low luminosity active galactic nuclei in the nearby Universe to powerful radio galaxies at high redshifts. We present and interpret observations of two morphologically homologous flares that occurred in active region (AR) NOAA 10501
on 20 November 2003. Both flares displayed four homologous Hα ribbons and were both accompanied by coronal mass ejections
(CMEs). The central flare ribbons were located at the site of an emerging bipole in the centre of the active region. The negative
polarity of this bipole fragmented in two main pieces, one rotating around the positive polarity by ≈ 110° within 32 hours.
We model the coronal magnetic field and compute its topology, using as boundary condition the magnetogram closest in time
to each flare. In particular, we calculate the location of quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs) in order to understand the connectivity between the flare ribbons. Though several polarities were present in AR 10501,
the global magnetic field topology corresponds to a quadrupolar magnetic field distribution without magnetic null points.
For both flares, the photospheric traces of QSLs are similar and match well the locations of the four Hα ribbons. This globally
unchanged topology and the continuous shearing by the rotating bipole are two key factors responsible for the flare homology.
However, our analyses also indicate that different magnetic connectivity domains of the quadrupolar configuration become unstable
during each flare, so that magnetic reconnection proceeds differently in both events. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of iron and manganese, the two important mobile metals, in an aquatic environment have been presented. These metals play an important role in the binding of nutrients and toxic elements by virtue of their high specific area in the oxide form. The concentration of Fe ranged from 1.08 to 5.2 mg/g and that of Mn from 0.27 to 2.17 mg/g. The Dal lake sediments were rich in Fe and those of the Wular lake had the lowest mean concentration of Fe. It was observed that the smaller particle size fractions had a higher metal content in comparison to large size fractions. Data on the selective extraction of Fe and Mn and their accumulation in humus material have also been given. 相似文献

Summary The eye readings of easterly declination at Trevandrum observatory have been analysed to determine solar and lunar daily vatiations. Hourly readings during February 1853 to February 1865 are analysed by Chapman-Miller method. The 8 values read at unequidistant day-time hours during March 1865 to December 1869 are analysed to compute the amplitude and phase of the semimonthly wave at each of the hours separately. The semi-monthly lunar wave obtained from the hourly readings shows a considerable night-time variation. In developing countries like India, migration of people from rural to urban areas is responsible for ever expanding urban boundaries. This trend is exerting significant pressure on unprotected natural forests located near urban centers. This paper highlights the case of Kerwa Forest Area (KFA), located at about 10 km from the city of Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh state. The objectives of this study are to quantify the extent of disturbance faced and ecosystem services provided by the KFA. Suitable spatial technologies and forest sampling techniques have been used to achieve the objectives of the study. It was found that the KFA is currently facing severe anthropogenic pressure. Parts of the KFA, located close to the settlements, were found more disturbed than the parts which were located far from the settlements. In spite of disturbances, KFA is a habitat for many threatened and endangered plant, animal, and bird species. KFA also plays a critical role of a carbon sink with a total storage of about 19.5 thousand tons of aboveground carbon. Immediate precautionary measures are required to prevent further degradation of the KFA for ensuring better environmental quality for the residents of Bhopal city in the future. 相似文献

In the absence of many gauging stations in the major and mighty river systems, there is a need for satellite-based observations to estimate temporal variations in the river water storage and associated water management. In this study, SARAL/AltiKa application for setting up hydraulic model (HEC-RAS) and river flow simulations over Tapi River India has been discussed. Waveform data of 40 Hz from Ka band altimeter has been used for water levels retrieval in the Tapi river. SARAL/AltiKa retrieved water levels were converted to discharge in the upstream location (track-926) using the rating curve available for the nearby gauging site and using linear spatial interpolation technique. Steady state simulations were done for various flow conditions in the upstream. Validation of river flow model was done in the downstream location (track-367) by comparing simulated and altimeter retrieved water levels (RMSE 0.67 m). Validated model was used to develop rating curve between water levels and simulated discharge for the downstream location which enables to monitor discharge variations from satellite platform in the absence of in situ observations. It has been demonstrated that SARAL/AltiKa data has potential for river flow monitoring and modeling which will feed for flood disaster forecasting, management and planning. 相似文献

This paper presents the study of normalized north–south asymmetry, cumulative normalized north–south asymmetry and cumulative difference indices of sunspot areas, solar active prominences (at total, low (?40°) and high (?50°) latitudes) and Hα solar flares from 1964 to 2008 spanning the solar cycles 20–23. Three different statistical methods are used to obtain the asymmetric behavior of different solar activity features. Hemispherical distribution of activity features shows the dominance of activities in northern hemisphere for solar cycle 20 and in southern hemisphere for solar cycles 21–23 excluding solar active prominences at high latitudes. Cumulative difference index of solar activity features in each solar cycle is observed at the maximum of the respective solar cycle suggesting a cyclic behavior of approximately one solar cycle length. Asymmetric behavior of all activity features except solar active prominences at high latitudes hints at the long term periodic trend of eight solar cycles. North–south asymmetries of SAP (H) express the specific behavior of solar activity at high solar latitudes and its behavior in long-time scale is distinctly opposite to those of other activity features. Our results show that in most cases the asymmetry is statistically highly significant meaning thereby that the asymmetries are real features in the N–S distribution of solar activity features. 相似文献
