About a century of exploitation of the galena-arsenopyrite deposit of Baccu Locci in Sardinia (Italy) has caused a severe, persistent arsenic contamination that extends downstream from the mine for several kilometres. Differently from As, the contamination of lead in surface waters is only localised in the upper part of the mine despite very high Pb concentrations in geologic materials (waste rocks, tailings, stream sediments, soils) over the whole Baccu Locci stream catchment. The aqueous and solid speciation of Pb in various environmental media of the Baccu Locci system was determined by means of a combined analytical (ICP-MS, SEM-EDX, TEM-EDX, chemical extraction) and thermodynamic approach (PHREEQC). The study has pointed out that relatively little Pb (up to 30 µg/L) is initially released to surface waters (pH = 7–8, Eh = 0.4–0.6 V) very rapidly due to dissolution of anglesite that is the first product of galena oxidation. Subsequently, Pb is removed (down to 0.6 µg/L) by probable sorption onto hydrous ferric oxides (e.g. ferrihydrite) and/or possible precipitation of As-containing plumbojarosite that is the main secondary Pb-bearing phase in stream sediments/tailings along the Baccu Locci stream course. The latter hypothesis is controversial since it is reported from the literature that plumbojarosite is formed under acidic conditions, although there is contrary field evidence as well. Bearing in mind the uncertainties introduced from thermodynamic and analytical data, the solubility calculations indicate strong undersaturation of surface waters with respect to plumbojarosite (SI: ? 19.9 to ? 3.7). On the contrary arsenatian plumbojarosite is at or close to saturation (SI: ? 0.6 to 3.2) in most surface waters and beudantite is clearly above saturation (SI: 4.1 to 12.7). This suggests that the incorporation of As might increase the stability of plumbojarosite, extending it up to near-neutral conditions. As a consequence, Pb is prevented from being released downstream to surface waters, and dissolved Pb concentrations remain definitely below the Italian and WHO limits for drinking waters (50 µg/L and 10 µg/L, respectively).  相似文献

We use a geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach to examine how the relationships between a set of predictors and prenatal care vary across the continental US. At its most fundamental, GWR is an exploratory technique that can facilitate the identification of areas with low prenatal care utilization and help better understand which predictors are associated with prenatal care at specific locations. Our work complements existing prenatal care research in providing an ecological, place-sensitive analysis. We found that the percent of the population who was uninsured was positively associated with the percent of women receiving late or no prenatal care in the global model. The GWR map not only confirmed, but also demonstrated the spatial varying association. Additionally, we found that the number of Ob-Gyn doctors per 100,000 females of childbearing age in a county was associated with the percentage of women receiving late or no prenatal care, and that a higher value of female disadvantage is associated with higher percentages of late or no prenatal care. GWR offers a more nuanced examination of prenatal care and provides empirical evidence in support of locally tailored health policy formation and program implementation, which may improve program effectiveness.  相似文献

Data were collected in the Tagus estuary from 1999–2007 on a monthly basis and combined with published results and for several previous years between 1980 and 1995, so that a comprehensive analysis could be performed over a non-continuous 27-year period. Sampling conditions and methods were similar for all datasets. Extreme wet and dry years were observed. River flow was strongly linked to phytoplankton abundance, with the highest biomass attained in dry years. The observed range of annual median Chl a was 1.8–7.6 µg L?1 and the overall median was 3.5 µg L?1. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and silicate showed a clear seasonal pattern, with a maximum in winter?spring, indicating a freshwater origin. Although wastewater treatment started in 1990, no difference was detected from 1980 to the present in terms of DIN and phosphorus. The recorded seasonal pattern for biomass with highest values in late spring–summer period is comparable to other temperate tidally influenced ecosystems. In spite of interannual differences in terms of Chl a concentration or the time of the maximum Chl a occurrence, a repeatable pattern could be identified. The mean growth development time for phytoplankton was 163 days (June 12) ranging 129–206 days (May 9–July 26) during the sampling period. No obvious changes in phytoplankton community structure were observed over time: diatoms were always the dominant group, and cryptophytes were relatively abundant throughout autumn–winter. The dominant species have remained essentially the same since 1969. River inflow, light availability, and temperature were the major factors shaping phytoplankton variability patterns. The strong influence of tidal mixing on the estuarine waters appears to lower the risk of potential eutrophication in the Tagus estuary. The lack of change in nutrients and phytoplankton biomass and composition observed in this study is an important contribution towards the assessment of natural variability versus responses to man-induced inputs in this severely anthropogenically disturbed estuary.  相似文献

Teleseismic body waves from broadband seismic stations are used to investigate the crustal and uppermost mantle structure of Stromboli volcano through inversion of the receiver functions (RFs). First, we computed RFs in the frequency domain using a multiple-taper spectral correlation technique. Then, the non-linear neighbourhood algorithm was applied to estimate the seismic shear wave velocity of the crust and uppermost mantle and to define the main seismic velocity discontinuities. The stability of the inversion solution was tested using a range of initial random seeds and model parameterizations. A shallow Moho, present at depth of 14.8 km, is evidence of a thinned crust beneath Stromboli volcano. However, the most intriguing and innovative result is a low S velocity layer in the uppermost mantle, below 32 km. The low S velocity layer suggests a possible partial melt region associated with the volcanism, as also recently supported by tomographic studies and petrological estimations.  相似文献

A methodology was tested for high‐resolution mapping of vegetation and detailed geoecological patterns in the Arctic Tundra, based on aerial imagery from an unmanned aerial vehicle (visible wavelength – RGB, 6 cm pixel resolution) and from an aircraft (visible and near infrared, 20 cm pixel resolution). The scenes were fused at 10 and 20 cm to evaluate their applicability for vegetation mapping in an alluvial fan in Adventdalen, Svalbard. Ground‐truthing was used to create training and accuracy evaluation sets. Supervised classification tests were conducted with different band sets, including the original and derived ones, such as NDVI and principal component analysis bands. The fusion of all original bands at 10 cm resolution provided the best accuracies. The best classifier was systematically the maximum neighbourhood algorithm, with overall accuracies up to 84%. Mapped vegetation patterns reflect geoecological conditioning factors. The main limitation in the classification was differentiating between the classes graminea, moss and Salix, and moss, graminea and Salix, which showed spectral signature mixing. Silty‐clay surfaces are probably overestimated in the south part of the study area due to microscale shadowing effects. The results distinguished vegetation zones according to a general gradient of ecological limiting factors and show that VIS+NIR high‐resolution imagery are excellent tools for identifying the main vegetation groups within the lowland fan study site of Adventdalen, but do not allow for detailed discrimination between species.  相似文献

We experimentally investigated the dissolution of forsterite, enstatite and magnesite in graphite-saturated COH fluids, synthesized using a rocking piston cylinder apparatus at pressures from 1.0 to 2.1 GPa and temperatures from 700 to 1200 °C. Synthetic forsterite, enstatite, and nearly pure natural magnesite were used as starting materials. Redox conditions were buffered by Ni–NiO–H2O (ΔFMQ = ??0.21 to ??1.01), employing a double-capsule setting. Fluids, binary H2O–CO2 mixtures at the P, T, and fO2 conditions investigated, were generated from graphite, oxalic acid anhydrous (H2C2O4) and water. Their dissolved solute loads were analyzed through an improved version of the cryogenic technique, which takes into account the complexities associated with the presence of CO2-bearing fluids. The experimental data show that forsterite?+?enstatite solubility in H2O–CO2 fluids is higher compared to pure water, both in terms of dissolved silica (mSiO2?=?1.24 mol/kgH2O versus mSiO2?=?0.22 mol/kgH2O at P?=?1 GPa, T?=?800 °C) and magnesia (mMgO?=?1.08 mol/kgH2O versus mMgO?=?0.28 mol/kgH2O) probably due to the formation of organic C–Mg–Si complexes. Our experimental results show that at low temperature conditions, a graphite-saturated H2O–CO2 fluid interacting with a simplified model mantle composition, characterized by low MgO/SiO2 ratios, would lead to the formation of significant amounts of enstatite if solute concentrations are equal, while at higher temperatures these fluid, characterized by MgO/SiO2 ratios comparable with that of olivine, would be less effective in metasomatizing the surrounding rocks. However, the molality of COH fluids increases with pressure and temperature, and quintuplicates with respect to the carbon-free aqueous fluids. Therefore, the amount of fluid required to metasomatize the mantle decreases in the presence of carbon at high PT conditions. COH fluids are thus effective carriers of C, Mg and Si in the mantle wedge up to the shallowest level of the upper mantle.  相似文献

Strong-motion data consisting of peak ground acceleration and velocity and 5 % damped response spectra are presented for 46 earthquakes of the Emilia seismic sequence which occurred in the Po Plain (northern Italy) in 2012. The data were recorded by the OGS temporary network installed close to the town of Ferrara following the main shock of May 20, 2012. Ground-motion peak parameters and spectral responses are compared with the ground-motion prediction equation (GMPE) of Bindi et al. (Bull Earthq Eng 9:1899–1920, 2011) for soft soils and reverse faults. Peak ground accelerations are in general in good agreement with those predicted by GMPE, while predicted peak ground velocities underestimate the observed data, especially for stronger events at more distant stations. The response spectra follow the trend in peak ground velocities, with observed values higher than predicted values at longer periods. This behavior has been interpreted as a site effect due to the deep soft alluvial cover of the Po Plain, which promotes ground motion characterized by a large low-frequency spectral content that is not yet well modeled by the Italian GMPE. A peculiar behavior was shown by the event occurring on June 6, 04:08:33 UTC, \(\hbox {M}=4.5\) , located at the eastern edge of the Po Plain, which produced peak ground accelerations exceeding three times the values estimated by attenuation laws. Such a great discrepancy could be related to post-critically reflected S-waves and multiples from the Moho (SmSM).  相似文献

Understanding deformation associated with active thrust wedges is essential to evaluate seismic hazards. In this study, we investigate the spatial distribution, timing, and rates of deformation across the central Andean backarc of Argentina, where deformation and shortening have been assumed to occur within a narrow wedge‐front zone. The combined results of our geomorphic mapping, topographic surveying, and 10Be exposure dating demonstrate that fault activity related to the growth of the Andean orogenic wedge is not only limited to a narrow thrust front zone but also occurs in the Andean wedge interior. There, internal structures with deformation rates of ca. 1.3 mm/year have been active during the last ~140 ka. Widely distributed deformation implies that seismic hazards may have been underestimated in the internal part of the Andean orogen.  相似文献

Abstract

Most Latin American glaciers are located in the tropical Andes. The melting processes of Glacier “15” on Antisana volcano were studied to understand the relationship between glacier retreat and natural climate variability and global climate change. Glaciers on the Antisana volcano are crucial sources of water as they feed the headwater rivers that supply Quito with potable water. The aim of this study was to build empirical models based on multiple correlations to reconstruct the mass loss of glaciers over a period of 10 years at three scales: local (data recorded by meteorological stations located around the volcano), regional (data from stations located around the country) and global (re-analysis data). Data quality was checked using graphical and statistical methods. Several empirical models based on multiple correlations were created to generate longer time series (42 and 115 years) of the mass balance for the glacier ablation zone. The long mass balance series were compared with the temperature variation series of the Earth’s surface in the Southern Hemisphere to estimate the relation between the mass balance and global warming. Our results suggest that the meteorological factors that best correlate with mass balance are temperature and wind.
