We analyse the differences in infrared circumstellar dust emission between oxygen-rich Mira and non-Mira stars, and find that they are statistically significant. In particular, we find that these stars segregate in the K–[12] versus [12]–[25] colour–colour diagram, and have distinct properties of the IRAS LRS spectra, including the peak position of the silicate emission feature. We show that the infrared emission from the majority of non-Mira stars cannot be explained within the context of standard steady-state outflow models.
The models can be altered to fit the data for non-Mira stars by postulating non-standard optical properties for silicate grains, or by assuming that the dust temperature at the inner envelope radius is significantly lower (300–400 K) than typical silicate grain condensation temperatures (800–1000 K) . We argue that the latter is more probable and provide detailed model fits to the IRAS LRS spectra for 342 stars. These fits imply that two-thirds of non-Mira stars and one-third of Mira stars do not have hot dust (>500 K) in their envelopes.
The absence of hot dust can be interpreted as a recent (∼100 yr) decrease in the mass-loss rate. The distribution of best-fitting model parameters agrees with this interpretation and strongly suggests that the mass loss resumes on similar time-scales. Such a possibility appears to be supported by a number of spatially resolved observations (e.g. recent Hubble Space Telescope images of the multiple shells in the Egg Nebula) and is consistent with new dynamical models for mass loss on the asymptotic giant branch.  相似文献

We present observations of several large two-ribbon flares observed with both the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) and the soft X-ray telescope on Yohkoh. The high spatial resolution TRACE observations show that solar flare plasma is generally not confined to a single loop or even a few isolated loops but to a multitude of fine coronal structures. These observations also suggest that the high-temperature flare plasma generally appears diffuse while the cooler ( less, similar2 MK) postflare plasma is looplike. We conjecture that the diffuse appearance of the high-temperature flare emission seen with TRACE is due to a combination of the emission measure structure of these flares and the instrumental temperature response and does not reflect fundamental differences in plasma morphology at the different temperatures.  相似文献

We report the discovery of a second field methane brown dwarf from the commissioning data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The object, SDSS J134646.45-003150.4 (hereafter SDSS 1346-00), was selected because of its very red color and stellar appearance. Its spectrum between 0.8 and 2.5 μm is dominated by strong absorption bands of H2O and CH4 and closely mimics those of Gliese 229B and SDSS 162414.37+002915.6 (hereafter SDSS 1624+00), two other known methane brown dwarfs. SDSS 1346-00 is approximately 1.5 mag fainter than Gliese 229B, suggesting that it lies about 11 pc from the Sun. The ratio of flux at 2.1 μm to that at 1.27 μm is larger for SDSS 1346-00 than for Gliese 229B and SDSS 1624+00, which suggests that SDSS 1346-00 has a slightly higher effective temperature than the others. Based on a search area of 130 deg2 and a detection limit of z*=19.8, we estimate a space density of 0.05 pc-3 for methane brown dwarfs with Teff approximately 1000 K in the 40 pc3 volume of our search. This estimate is based on small-sample statistics and should be treated with appropriate caution.  相似文献

The SORCE Science Data System produces total solar irradiance (TSI) and spectral solar irradiance (SSI) data products on a daily basis, which are formulated using measurements from the four primary instruments onboard the SORCE spacecraft. The Science Data System utilizes raw spacecraft and instrument telemetry, calibration data, and other ancillary information to produce and distribute a variety of data products that have been corrected for all known instrumental and operational effects. SORCE benefits from a highly optimized object-oriented data processing system in which all data are stored in a commercial relational database system, and the software itself determines the versions of data products at run-time. This unique capability facilitates optimized data storage and CPU utilization during reprocessing activities by requiring only new data versions to be generated and stored. This paper provides an overview of the SORCE data processing system, details its design, implementation, and operation, and provides details on how to access SORCE science data products.  相似文献

Rock avalanches destroy and reshape landscapes in only a few minutes and are among the most hazardous processes on Earth. The surface morphology of rock avalanche deposits and the interaction with the underlying material are crucial for runout properties and reach. Water within the travel path is displaced, producing large impact waves and reducing friction, leading to long runouts. We hypothesize that the 0.2 km3 Holocene Eibsee rock avalanche from Mount Zugspitze in the Bavarian Alps overran and destroyed Paleolake Eibsee and left a unique sedimentological legacy of processes active during the landslide. We captured 9.5 km of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) profiles across the rock avalanche deposits, with up to 120 m penetration depth and more than 34 000 datum points. The ERT profiles reveal up to ~50 m thick landslide debris, locally covering up to ~30 m of rock debris with entrained fine-grained sediments on top of isolated remnants of decametre-wide paleolake sediments. The ERT profiles allow us to infer processes involved in the interaction of the rock avalanche with bedrock, lake sediments, and morainal sediments, including shearing, bulging, and bulldozing. Complementary data from drilling, a gravel pit exposure, laboratory tests, and geomorphic features were used for ERT calibration. Sediments overrun by the rock avalanche show water-escape structures. Based on all of these datasets, we reconstructed both position and size of the paleolake prior to the catastrophic event. Our reconstruction of the event contributes to process an understanding of the rock avalanche and future modelling and hazard assessment. Here we show how integrated geomorphic, geophysical, and sedimentological approaches can provide detailed insights into the impact of a rock avalanche on a lake. © 2020 The Authors. We present the ensemble properties of 31 comets (27 resolved and 4 unresolved) observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This sample of comets represents about 1 comet per 10 million SDSS photometric objects. Five-band (u, g, r, i, z) photometry is used to determine the comets’ colors, sizes, surface brightness profiles, and rates of dust production in terms of the A formalism. We find that the cumulative luminosity function for the Jupiter Family Comets in our sample is well fit by a power law of the form N(<H)  10(0.49±0.05)H for H < 18, with evidence of a much shallower fit N(<H)  10(0.19±0.03)H for the faint (14.5 < H < 18) comets. The resolved comets show an extremely narrow distribution of colors (0.57 ± 0.05 in g ? r for example), which are statistically indistinguishable from that of the Jupiter Trojans. Further, there is no evidence of correlation between color and physical, dynamical, or observational parameters for the observed comets.  相似文献

The subject of measuring the performance of registries has been a topic of policy discussions in recent years at the regional level due to the recasting of the European Union (EU) port state control (PSC) directive which introduces incentives for flags which perform better. Since the current method used in the EU region entails some shortcomings, it has therefore been the subject of substantial scrutiny. Furthermore, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed a set of performance indicators which however lacks the ability to measure compliance as set out in one of its strategic directions towards fostering global compliance. This article develops a methodology to measure flag state performance which can be applied on the regional or global level and to other areas of legislative interest (e.g. recognized organizations, Document of Compliance Companies). The proposed methodology overcomes some of the shortcomings of the present method and presents a more refined, less biased approach of measuring performance. To demonstrate its usefulness, it is applied to a sample of 207,821 observations for a 3-year time frame and compared to the current method.  相似文献

Clinopyroxene is an essential mineral in eclogitic rocks. It commonly contains minor amounts of the defect-bearing Ca-Eskola (CaEs, Ca0.50.5AlSi2O6) component, with higher concentrations generally considered to indicate a high-pressure origin at least within the coesite stability field. Changes in pressure and temperature conditions can lead to exsolution of this component as a free SiO2 phase, which may have a number of petrological implications. This makes it important to understand the factors that maximize CaEs incorporation in clinopyroxene. We have undertaken a series of experiments at high pressures and temperatures (4–10 GPa and 1000–1350 °C) to further investigate the systematics of CaEs incorporation in eclogite-like clinopyroxene and the factors responsible for maximizing CaEs contents. Two simple chemical systems were chosen that allow unambiguous interpretation of the results: (1) CMAS + H2O and (2) two compositions in the NCMAS system. All experimental products contained clinopyroxene and garnet along with either a free SiO2 phase or a silicate melt. Coexisting garnet is grossular-rich, generally with X gr ≥ 0.67. Compositional variations are attributable to the presence or absence of melt and changes in modal amounts of garnet at different pressure–temperature conditions. Even small amounts of H2O lower the solidus temperature and the presence of a melt reduces the SiO2 activity, which destabilizes the CaEs component in clinopyroxene. The CaEs and the Ca-Tschermaks (CaTs, CaAl2SiO6) components in clinopyroxene decrease with increasing jadeite mole fraction, which is also a function of pressure and bulk Al content. Modeling X-ray powder diffraction data yields a molar volume for the CaEs endmember of V CaEs = 60.87(63) cm3, which reasonably agrees with a literature value that was estimated from natural samples. In the presence of coexisting coesite, the CaEs and CaTs do not vary independently of each other, being controlled by the internal equilibrium 2CaEs = CaTs + 3SiO2 (coesite). This relation, observed in simple systems (i.e., CMAS ± Na), is also obeyed by clinopyroxene in more complex, natural analog bulk compositions. An assessment of available experimental data reveals a maximum of 15–18 mol% CaEs in eclogitic clinopyroxene at conditions corresponding to 130–180 km depth. CaEs contents are maximized at high temperatures; i.e., at or near the solidus in the presence of coesite. Thus, this study supports the role of CaEs exsolution in contributing to melt generation during upwelling of eclogite bodies in the mantle, albeit with some caveats. Somewhat higher maximum CaEs contents (~20 mol%) are found in Ca and Al-rich bulk compositions, such as grospydite xenoliths. Such bulk compositions also seem to require the coexistence of kyanite. Other Ca and Al-rich rock types, like rodingites, should have the potential of containing CaEs-rich clinopyroxenes, except that they are SiO2-undersaturated. This emphasizes the further role of bulk composition, in addition to high temperatures, in achieving maximum CaEs contents in high-pressure clinopyroxene.  相似文献
