Eighteen samples of the McMurdo volcanics on Ross Island, Antarctica consisting of basanitoid, trachybasalt and phonolite have been analyzed for rare earth elements (REE) in order to determine the details of differentiation using quantitative trace element modeling. The basanitoids have REE patterns similar to those for alkali basalts or nephelinites from ocean islands. Since there is no correlation between REE and silica contents among five basanitoids, some of the variability in the REE contents must be related to the extent of partial melting, variation in the residual mineralogies of the mantle during melting, or to inhomogeneities in the REE composition of the mantle.In order to explain the data, more than one differentiation sequence is necessary. In each case a basanitoid melt is the parent which differentiates to trachybasalt upon separation of olivine, clinopyroxene, spinel, ±kaersutite±plagioclase±apatite. If clinopyroxene, kaersutite, anorthoclase, plagioclase and apatite separate from a trachybasalt melt, a mafic phonolite results.If, however, no kaersutite is involved, an anorthoclase phonolite results. A distinct type of mafic phonolite results if kaersutite is one of the minerals that separates from the anorthoclase phonolite. If the anorthoclase phonolite precipitates plagioclase and anorthoclase and if the melt reacts with plagioclase-rich continental rocks, a trachyte results.Formerly spelled: Shine Soon Sun  相似文献

Geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs) are commonly reported as having hardpan or low hydraulic conductivity units underneath that produce perched groundwater, which can sustain surface water levels independently of regional aquifer fluctuations. Despite the potential of GIW-perched aquifer systems to provide important hydrological and ecological functions such as groundwater storage and native amphibian habitat, little research has studied the hydrologic controls and dynamics of these systems. We compared several ridge-top depressional GIW-perched groundwater systems to investigate the role of watershed morphology on hydroregime and groundwater-surface water interaction. Ridge-top depressional wetlands in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky were chosen because they offer natural controls such as lack of apparent connection to surface water bodies, similar climate, and similar soils. Three wetlands with different topographic slopes and hillslope structures were mapped to distinguish key geomorphic parameters and monitored to characterize groundwater-surface water interaction. Wetlands with soil hummocks and low upland slopes transitioned from infiltration to groundwater discharge conditions in the spring and during storm events. The magnitude and duration of this transition fell along a continuum, where higher topographic slopes and steeper uplands produced comparably smaller and shorter head reversals. This demonstrates that ridge-top GIW-perched groundwater systems are largely sensitive to the runoff-recharge relationship in the upland area which can produce significant groundwater storage on a small-scale.  相似文献

The fact that a seismogram can be represented as an autoregressive (AR) time series and the use of Prony's method enable us to obtain the complex frequencies from the poles of the corresponding AR process. A frequency-domain formulation which employs a time-domain tapering technique is devised so that spectral peaks can be analysed individually, or in small groups. The Resolving Power of Gross Earth Data   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22  
A gross Earth datum is a single measurable number describing some property of the whole Earth, such as mass, moment of interia, or the frequency of oscillation of some identified elastic-gravitational normal mode. We show how to determine whether a given finite set of gross Earth data can be used to specify an Earth structure uniquely except for fine-scale detail; and how to determine the shortest length scale which the given data can resolve at any particular depth. We apply the general theory to the linear problem of finding the depth-variation of a frequency-independent local Q from the observed quality factors Q of a finite number of normal modes. We also apply the theory to the non-linear problem of finding density vs depth from the total mass, moment, and normal-mode frequencies, in case the compressional and shear velocities are known.  相似文献

Coastal Mediterranean sediments highly polluted by refinery effluents have been studied for their hydrocarbon content and bacterial activity. The study has taken into account both the distance from the refinery and depth of sampling. Very high hydrocarbon concentrations have been found (1–250 g/kg dry sediment). Micro-organisms in the sediments have a high bacterial activity and a good correlation exists between hydrocarbon concentrations and bacteria able to use these substrates as a carbon and energy source.  相似文献
