Abstract This paper examines the applicability of the Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse Model to rainfall taken from a site in Elmdon, Birmingham, UK. The approach used is to assess the performance of the model in terms of characteristics of the precipitation process, incorporating monthly seasonality. Analytical expressions are derived to complement those presented in Rodriguez-Iturbe et al. (1987). As in that paper, the shortcomings of the simple Poisson process are reduced by the use of a Bartlett-Lewis process. Different methods of parameter estimation are examined. The characteristic features of the time distribution of rainfall events, however, can be well approximated only by optimization and this enables an improved identification of the model parameters. 相似文献

We report on the first meteorite search campaign in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The geology and proximity of our search region suggest that it is the north‐western extension of the Oman meteorite fields. We found 26 ordinary chondrites, bringing the total number of official meteorites from the UAE to 28. The campaign was organized and conducted in close cooperation with the UAE government and the main masses of the meteorites remained in the country where they will become part of an exhibition. The bulk composition of five meteorite and three soil samples indicates an uptake of U, Mo, Sr, Ba, Li, and Pb from the soil into the meteorites during terrestrial weathering. Terrestrial ages determined from 14C decay of 21 meteorites range from recent falls to 24.4 ka, with two meteorites having >37 ka and approximately 39 ka, respectively. Weak correlations between weathering degree, meteorite bulk chemical composition, and terrestrial age suggest highly localized weathering conditions, possibly related to abundant occurrences of sabkhas in the search region. 相似文献

Several studies have demonstrated high levels of genetic (DNA), ecophysiological, ecological, and morphological variation within the species Purple Saxifrage, Saxifraga oppositifolia , in Svalbard. It has recently been proposed that S. oppositifolia is represented by two conspicuously different subspecies in this archipelago: ssp. reptans , a late-flowering, prostrate ecotype of snow-protected, damp habitats, and ssp. pulvinata , an early-flowering, cushion-like ecotype of dry, wind-exposed heaths and ridges. It has also been suggested that the subspecies may be differentiated at the tetraploid and diploid levels, respectively, which would promote reproductive isolation. These hypotheses are tested by examining variation in morphology, ecology, and pollen size and stainability in 150 plants of S. oppositifolia growing in 50 vegetation samples at four sites in the Kongsfjorden area. Although analyses of the various data sets demonstrated the large variation within the species, the material could not be separated into distinct groups. The morphological variation was continuous along local ecological gradients. The pollen grains were fully stainable and the pollen diameter data showed a unimodal distribution, suggesting that the plants analysed represent only one ploidal level. These results reject a hypothesis that the morphologically intermediate plants are hybrids between two taxa at different ploidal levels. Thus, the conspicuous variation in S. oppositifolia in Svalbard probably results from local, in situ ecoclinal differentiation. Although this variation clearly is without taxonomic significance, it is important in the broader context of arctic conservation biology and the potential impact of global warming on arctic vegetation. 相似文献

Geological mapping, definition of facies distributions and reconstruction of platform‐interior growth geometries of the Messinian Cariatiz carbonate platform (Sorbas basin, South Spain), were performed to evaluate the controlling factors in platform growth and to test a 3‐D computer simulation program. For the simulation with the program REPRO, five platform‐related facies were modelled: (1) the reef crest facies by the numerical solution of a Fisher equation; (2) the lagoonal facies by a function of water depth‐dependent carbonate production; (3) the proximal and middle slope facies (breccia and block facies, calcarenite facies) by a subroutine simulating gravity‐driven particle export from the reef crest; (4) a distal slope; and (5) a basinal facies by a pelagic rain function. Development of a fan delta conglomeratic system is simulated by using a siliciclastic point source and gravity‐driven particle redistribution. A best fit between the observed platform growth geometries and modelling results is achieved by assuming that high‐frequency sea‐level changes superimposed onto a longer term sea‐level fall controlled platform growth. For the modelling, a relative sea‐level curve was reconstructed, which is based on a deep‐sea benthic foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope record at ODP Site 926 with a 45 m eustatic sea‐level fall, and a tectonic uplift component of 20 m. The consistency of 3‐D simulation results is corroborated by the coral growth rates provided by the Fisher‐equation subroutine. These rates of 2–8 mm year−1 compare well to the coral growth rates in Recent fringing reefs. We propose that during the early stage of platform evolution the high‐frequency fluctuations were obliquity‐modulated precessional cycles, whereas precessional cycles control later stages of platform growth. REPRO provides a separate visualization of the different facies bodies as a function of time and space, showing the intrinsic pattern of facies distribution in the platform. This is the result of a combination of platform growth and syndepositional subaerial erosion. For example, only the youngest stages of reef framework facies in the development of the Cariatiz carbonate platform are preserved. 相似文献

Boulders of the Younger Dryas Salpausselkä I (Ss I) formation west of Lahti, southern Finland, were sampled for surface exposure dating. The 10Be concentrations, determined by accelerator mass spectrometry, yield minimum exposure ages of 11 930 ± 950, 11 220 ± 890, 11 050 ± 910 and 11 540 ± 990 years, using recently published production rates scaled for latitude and elevation. This includes a correction to the production rate resulting from postglacial uplift of the Fennoscandian lithosphere (i.e. changing elevation) during the time of exposure. The error‐weighted mean exposure age of 11 420 ± 470 years of the analysed boulders agrees with previous varve dates of Ss I, which range from 11 680 to 11 430 calendar years BP. However, erosion has to be taken into account as a process affecting rock surfaces and therefore influencing exposure ages. Available information suggests an erosion rate of 5 mm/kyr, which increases the error‐weighted mean exposure age to a value of 11 610 ± 470 years. Within the errors, the formation of Ss I in the Vesala area west of Lahti falls into the Younger Dryas time bracket, as defined by the GRIP and GISP 2 ice core (Greenland). 相似文献

Chironomid analysis revealed a pattern of limnological evolution from oligotrophic conditions in a relatively deep lake during 8.6 to 5.5 cal. kaBP, followed by a period of lake shallowing from 5.5 to 2.7 cal. ka BP. Increases in acidity and littoral habitat complexity may have occurred from 2.7cal. kaBP to the present, though some compositional changes may have resulted from human disturbance. Chironomid-inferred mean July air temperatures range between 9.8C in the Early Holocene to 11.3C in the Late Holocene. Limitations on chironomid-based quantitative temperature interpretations may exist because of low taxon richness. Diatoms were recovered from the upper sediments only, from about AD 1800. Pollen and spore analysis revealed an early colonizing vegetation of juniper, sedges and birch soon after local deglaciation, followed by birch forests until about 8.3 cal. kaBP. Alder stands occurred locally to 5.5 cal. kaBP, when pine and spruce forests developed and remain to the present day. These results suggest that little major terrestrial vegetation change may occur in some northern environments with predicted future global warming, where it is predicted to be most severe. Aquatic environments may, however, be greatly affected by a shift in precipitation regime, causing changes in allochthonous organic input, lake depth and possibly the amount of human activity or disturbance in the watershed. 相似文献

Proglacial deposits from three independently dated sites in the Swiss lowlands were investigated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) to test the reliability of the applied dating approach. Using the single-aliquot regenerative-dose technique applied to small aliquots of quartz revealed that in all samples the OSL signal was differentially bleached prior to deposition. A statistical approach is introduced to extract the fraction of aliquots in which the OSL was apparently set to zero at deposition. The statistical treatment provided OSL ages in good consistency with independent age control. However, some uncertainties remain with this approach, since it is difficult to assess the natural scatter caused by dose-rate inhomogeneity exactly. The available data set implies that glaciers reached the Swiss lowlands prior to about 25 000 yr ago. Previously published data from other sites demonstrate that glaciers were present in lowland Switzerland up to about 20000 yr ago. Furthermore, one OSL date of about 70 000 yr for proglacial outwash sediments points to the presence of the Rhône Glacier in the Lake Neuchâtel area during the middle part of the Late Pleistocene. 相似文献

Surface exposure dating, using in situ produced cosmogenic 10 Be, is applied to determine the time since deglaciation of bedrock surfaces in the Grimsel Pass region. Nine 10 Be dates from bedrock surfaces corrected for cover by snow are minimum ages for deglaciation of the pass. Four 10 Be dates from surfaces below 2500 meters above sea level (m a.s.l.) on Nägelisgrätli, east of Grimsel Pass, yield ages that range from about 14 000 to 11 300 years. Three 10 Be dates from locations above 2600 m a.s.l. on Nägelisgrätli are between about 11 700 and 10 400 years. Two 10 Be dates from locations at 2560 m a.s.l. below Juchlistock are about 12 100 and 11 000 years. The geographical distribution of 10 Be dates on Nägelisgrätli either may show the timing of progressive deglaciation of Grimsel Pass or may reflect differences in subglacial erosion of bedrock in the pass region. All dates are discussed in the context of deglaciation of the late Würmian Alpine ice cap and deglaciation from Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice extents in other regions. 相似文献

The well-known lower lignite layer at Gossau (15 km SE of Zürich, Switzerland) has been radiocarbon-dated to between 30 000 and 54 000 yr BP. Though these dates may be considered to be beyond the acceptable limit of the technique, there can be little doubt on stratigraphical grounds that the deposits date from some early part of MOI Stage 3. The lower lignite has yielded 49 taxa of beetles from which a detailed palaeoenvironmental picture can be reconstructed. Quantified palaeotemperature estimates using the Mutual Climatic Range method, based on this fossil assemblage, indicate that the climate was cold and considerably more continental than it is today in the Swiss Midlands and close to the thermal limit for the growth of trees. The fauna bears similarities to others from the same general period in northern Europe. 相似文献
