Although a number of studies of the variation of soil transport with increase in slope angle have appeared, few include an information on the interaction of sheetwash and rainsplash on high slope angles, which is necessary to test Horton's proposed polynomial relationship. Virtually no studies are available which compare the influence of changes in soil type or antecedent moisture on established relationships. This paper reports the testing of eight soils from Alberta, Canada, under simulated rainfall on ten slopes from 3° to 30°. Material eroded was separated into that transported by rainsplash and that by sheetwash. In general, it was found that the influence of changes in slope angle on soil transport is best described by polynomial relationships, but these are shown to vary considerably between rainspash and sheetwash, between different soil types and for different antecedent moisture conditions. Despite careful control of all factors other than slope angle very high variability of results was experienced. Causes of variability are examined and the need for evaluation of the effect of test plot size on variability of results is suggested.  相似文献

Architecture at the Maya archaeological site of Uxmal in Yucatan, Mexico has been documented since the 17th century by historians, archaeologists, illustrators, photographers, and most recently photogrammetrists. This paper reviews the work of the major contributors to recording of architecture at Uxmal with a particular focus on the 19th century stereophotography of Alice and Augustus Le Plongeon who worked to record all the standing architecture at Uxmal, and the close range stereophotogrammetric projects that recorded the Adivino Pyramid during the late 20th century.  相似文献

This paper reports on an investigation into the suitability of the Kodak DCS Pro Back for use in close range photogrammetric measurement. The camera back, being used in conjunction with a medium-format non-metric camera, has been assessed with a view to using it for low- to medium-order photogrammetric work in architectural recording. Examinations centred upon the stability of the camera back with respect to the camera body and the effects of the removable infrared filter that is present immediately above the camera's focal plane. Ultimately the camera combination was deemed suitable for application in recording of this kind and is now in active use by the Metric Survey Team at English Heritage.  相似文献

Melting experiments carried out at 1-atm and at 2 kbar on mid-ocean ridge basalts dredged from the mid-Atlantic ridge near the Kane Fracture Zone (KFZ, 22° to 25° N. latitude) provide a basis for evaluating the role of crystal fractionation in generating compositional variability observed in normal mid-ocean ridge basalt. The 1-atm olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxene saturation boundary for KFZ lavas defines a path in mineral projection schemes and in oxide-oxide diagrams that is displaced from the same experimentally determined boundaries in FAMOUS (Grove and Bryan 1983) and Oceanographer Fracture Zone (Walker et al. 1979) basalts. The glass margins of sparsely phyric KFZ lavas record small amounts of near surface, low pressure fractional crystallization, and their glass and bulk rock compositions are similar. An important signature of low pressure differentiation is recorded in the quenched glass margins of moderately phyric KFZ lavas compared to their bulk rock compositions, and the glass has evolved along low-pressure fractionation paths that are similar to those produced in the 1-atm experiments. Many of the lavas have retained phenocrysts in equilibrium proportions, so that their bulk rock compositions represent liquid compositions. When the effects of near-surface differentiation and crystal accumulation are removed from the Kane data set, and only liquid compositions are considered, a suite of basalt magmas can be identified that forms a trend in mineral component projection schemes parallel to the 1-atm oliv-plag-cpx multiple saturation boundary, but displaced from it toward olivine. These basalts have only olivine and plagioclase as phenocrysts, and are well removed from clinopyroxene saturation at low pressure. The compositional variation can not be generated by mixing any primary liquid composition with a low pressure liquid that has evolved along the oliv-plag-cpx multiple saturation boundary. Major and trace element models of this trend using olivine, plagioclase and clinopyroxene as fractionating phases match the compositional variability. This compositional trend is generated by fractionation at pressures greater than 2 kbar, but within the plagioclase stability field. A review of the data for other normal MORB suites from this part of the mid-Atlantic ridge reveals a similar elevated pressure fractionation signature which persists when the effects of low pressure magma mixing are removed from the data set.  相似文献

The hydrogeology of the chemical waste disposal site in the closed basin at Alkali Lake, Oregon has been examined. Interest in the site is due to the burial (November 1976) of 25,000 drums of herbicide manufacturing residues in unlined trenches on the playa of the basin. Included in the wastes were large amounts of chlorophenols and polymeric chlorophenoxyphenols. The flow of the alkaline (pH ∼10) ground water in the site area is driven by: (1) springs which create a mound east of the site; and (2) the sump effect of “West Alkali Lake,” a topographic low to the west of the site. Porosity, bulk mass densities, and grain-size distributions were determined. At one piezometer, the depth to ground water ranged between 0.9 m and 2.2 m. With the bottoms of the trenches in which the chemicals were buried between 0.60 and 0.75 m below the level of the ground surface, the bottom portions of the trenches may, at least occasionally, be in direct contact with the ground water.  相似文献

A sequence of numerical experiments is conducted using a linear, semi-spectral equatorial ocean model and an advanced data assimilation scheme. The numerical model is based on decomposition of the oceanic fields into Kelvin and Rossby waves belonging to the baroclinic modes of a stratified equatorial ocean. The assimilation procedure finds that solution to the model equations that best fits, in the generalized least-squares sense, all observations made within some specified space-time interval. All experiments are of the ‘identical twin’ type; synthetic data are generated by sampling the observable fields produced by a control run of the model, then the data are assimilated using the same model. The sequence of numerical experiments serves two purposes; to demonstrate the performance of the assimilation procedure in the context of a fully three-dimensional, time-varying equatorial ocean model; and to examine the utility of specified data sets, in particular, observations of sea level, in estimating the state of the equatorial ocean. The results indicate that the assimilation procedure works very well when sufficient data are provided. However, sea-level data alone are not sufficient and must be supplemented with subsurface observations if more than a few baroclinic modes are allowed in the model ocean. The required amount of supplementary subsurface data (in the form of density profiles in these experiments) can be reduced by imposing smoothness contraints on the recovered model solution.  相似文献

For almost a decade the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma has been used as a field laboratory for the investigation of aspects of the remediation and restoration of oil and brine spills. Objectives of this work have included: (1) simplification of the remediation process and lowering the cost of remediation; (2) the development of methods to accelerate or jump-start the restoration process; and (3) determining appropriate metrics for assessing the status of soil ecosystem recovery. This research has resulted in a number of lessons learned that will be presented here which can be exported to other exploration and production sites, especially sites located in sensitive ecosystems. Key observations have included the role of a fertilizer amendment in linking the remediation and restoration process at an oil-impacted site, the use of nematodes as ecological indicators in the restoration of oil- and brine-impacted sites, and the development of a two-stage process for remediation of brine impacted sites that does not include significant use of gypsum.  相似文献
