A geomorphological and statistical analysis of slope canyons from the northern KwaZulu-Natal continental margin is documented
and compared with submarine canyons from the Atlantic margin of the USA. The northern KwaZulu-Natal margin is characterized
by increasing upslope relief, concave slope-gradient profiles and features related to upslope growth of the canyon forms.
Discounting slope-gradient profile, this morphology is strikingly similar to canyon systems of the New Jersey slope. Several
phases of canyon incision indicate that downslope erosion is also an important factor in the evolution of the northern KwaZulu-Natal
canyon systems. Despite the strong similarities between the northern KwaZulu-Natal and New Jersey slope-canyon systems, key
differences are evident: (1) the concavity of the northern KwaZulu-Natal slope, contrasting with the ∼linear New Jersey slope;
(2) the relative isolation of the northern KwaZulu-Natal canyons, rather than the dense clustering of the New Jersey canyons;
and (3) the absence of strongly shelf-breaching canyons along the northern KwaZulu-Natal margin. In comparison with the New
Jersey margin, we surmise a more youthful stage of canyon evolution, a result of either the canyons themselves being younger
or the formative processes being less active. Less complicated patterns of erosion resulting from reduced sediment availability
have developed in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The reduction in slope concavity on the New Jersey margin may be the result of grading
of the upper slope by intensive headward erosion, a process more subdued—or less evident—on the KwaZulu-Natal margin. 相似文献

The spatial and temporal dynamics of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved phosphate, dissolved silica and chlorophyll a were measured seasonally at eight stations in the Ria de Aveiro. Between December 2000 and September 2001, the seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages, inferred after the spatial and seasonal variation of silica and of chlorophyll a concentrations, showed that diatoms (μmol Si L−1) dominated from late autumn until early spring, while chlorophytes (μg Chl a L−1) bloomed during late spring and summer. The Si:N:P ratios and Si concentrations indicated no seasonal depletion in dissolved silica, as in other temperate systems, possibly because of abnormal precipitation and flood events prolonging the supply of dissolved Si to the system. The Si:N:P ratios suggested P limitation at the system level. Despite the relative proportions of available nutrients, the mean phosphorus concentration (5.3 μmol L−1) was above the reported half-saturation constants for P uptake by phytoplankton. Thus, in Ria de Aveiro, the seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages may also be dependent on the grazing capacity of the pelagic community through top-down regulation. 相似文献

The build-up of pore-water pressure by waves can lead to sediment liquefaction and subsequent transport by traction currents. This process was investigated by measuring pore-water pressures both in a field experiment and laboratory wave tank tests. Liquefaction was observed in the wave tank tests. The results suggest that sand is less susceptible than silts to wave-induced liquefaction because of the tendency to partially dissipate pore-water pressures. However, previous studies have determined that pore-water pressures must approach liquefaction before current velocities necessary to initiate transport are reduced. Morphodynamic modeling is employed in the present work to predict the long-term evolution (over the next 100 years) of typical sedimentary coasts in the western Russian Arctic. The studied objects are the coasts of Varandey (the Barents Sea), Baydaratskaya Bay and Harasavey (the Kara Sea). The model developed takes into account both the short-term processes (storm events) and long-term factors (for example, changes in sea level, inter-annual variations in gross sediment flux, lack or excess of sediment supply). Predicted and observed morphological changes in coastal profiles are shown to agree well for time scales ranging from weeks to decades. It is revealed that under given environmental conditions, the morphological evolution is strongly influenced by storm surges and associated wind-driven circulation. The water level gradient created by a surge generates a seaward flow at the bed. This outflow is shown to be an important destructive mechanism contributing to the erosion and recession of Arctic coasts. The rate of change is found to depend on both the exposure of the coast (relative to the direction of dominant winds) and its height above the sea. The open coast of Varandey is expected to retreat as much as 300–500 m over 100 years, while recession of the less exposed coasts of Baydaratskaya Bay would not exceed about 100 m/century. If long-term sediment losses are insignificant, the rate of erosion decays with time and the morphodynamic system may tend toward equilibrium. It is concluded that the expected relative sea-level rise (up to 1 m over the nearest 100 years) is non-crucial to the future coastal evolution if an erosion activity is already high enough. 相似文献

Wavelet analysis of bathymetric sidescan sonar data for the classification of seafloor sediments in Hopvågen Bay - Norway 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper we examine the use of bathymetric sidescan sonar for automatic classification of seabed sediments. Bathymetric sidescan sonar, here implemented through a small receiver array, retains the advantage of sidescan in speed through illuminating large swaths, but also enables the data gathered to be located spatially. The spatial location allows the image intensity to be corrected for depth and insonification angle, thus improving the use of the sonar for identifying changes in seafloor sediment. In this paper we investigate automatic tools for seabed recognition, using wavelets to analyse the image of Hopvågen Bay in Norway. We use the back-propagation elimination algorithm to determine the most significant wavelet features for discrimination. We show that the features selected present good agreement with the grab sample results in the survey under study and can be used in a classifier to discriminate between different seabed sediments. 相似文献

Integrated coastal management (ICM) is an emerging approach in East Africa for the solution of various coastal issues. This paper is intended to provide an update on the current practical aspects concerning the ICM process and related policies and strategies in Madagascar. Efforts are being made in Madagascar for the mutual integration of numerous coastal projects and activities within the Environment Program of the National Environmental Action Plan. The foundations for an ICM program, built during an ICM workshop, which took place at the end of 1996 upon existing activities, are being expanded presently. These developments concern, above all, the institutional aspects related to the formulation of an ICM program. Therefore, the actual situation sees an overgrowing collaboration of the national and international agencies involved in the implementation of coastal projects, in an expandingly integrating way, within an institutional framework that grows progressively stronger. The case of Madagascar suggests reflections on how ICM can mitigate potential sectoral conflicts as well as on, how the sometimes complex nature of the social and cultural issues may influence the development of an ICM program. The need for monitoring ICM is stressed and the role of outside partners clarified. 相似文献

Neomysis mercedis were exposed to the rice herbicides molinate and thiobencarb, which have been detected in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Continuous-flow acute and chronic toxicity studies were performed. For thiobencarb, the 4-, 7- and 14-day LCsos were 304, 214 and 91 μg/liter, respectively. For molinate, these values were 9910, 2530, and 820 μg/liter, respectively. Mortality stabilized after 18 and 28 days exposure, respectively, for thiobencarb and molinate. The incipient lethal concentrations were 53 and 230 μg/liter, respectively. Joint toxicity studies indicated additive toxicity for the two chemicals. Chronic no observable effects concentrations (NOECs) were estimated at 3·2 and 25·6 μg/liter for thiobencarb and molinate, with measurable effects occurring at 6·2 and 45·2 μg/liter, respectively. Environmental monitoring data suggests that concentrations of these chemicals in the Delta prior to 1985 may have exceeded the threshold for chronic toxicity, under conditions of joint exposure. However, due to continued improvements in pesticide management practices, environmental concentrations decreased to approximately 30 percent of the chronic threshold for joint toxicity by 1988. Water surface profiles and horizontal and vertical water particle velocity components have been measured to investigate the properties of intermediate depth waves generated in the laboratory. The data has been compared with linear wave theory. Abstract. Survival and behaviour of the hermatypic coral Diploria strigosa was studied during 6–24 h doses with water-accomodated fractions of chemically dispersed crude oil, and for a subsequent recovery period of 1 month. Experiments utilized a flow-through laboratory dosing procedure and incorporated petroleum hydrocarbon measurements in order to simulate a major but short-term oil spill in shallow subtidal benthic reef environments. Chemically dispersed oil treatments consisted of Arabian Light Crude oil with Corexit 9527 or BP1100WD at 1–20 ppm concentrations of oil.
In general, effects observed were sub-lethal, temporary, and associated with the highest concentrations tested. Responses to the presence of dispersed oil at 20ppm for 24 h included mesenterial filament extrusion, extreme tissue contraction, tentacle retraction and localized tissue rupture. The nature and severity of reactions during the dosing phase varied between colonies and treatments, but colonies typically resumed normal behaviour within 2 h to 4 d of the recovery period. An assessment is made of the maximum wave induced bending moment expected to occur during the operational lifetime of a fast monohull, based on long term distribution calculations of the non-linear vertical bending moment at mid-ship. The ship is assumed to operate in the Northern North Sea, with an operational life of 25 years. A succession of short-term stationary ship responses represented by Rayleigh distributions of peaks results in the long-term distribution of the structural loads. Non-linear pseudo transfer functions are used in the procedure to calculate the variances of the short-term responses. The amplitudes of these transfer functions are calculated by a non-linear time domain seakeeping program.
