A statistical investigation has been made about the flare-process in relation to the photospheric magnetic field and configuration. We report here results from a study of X-ray bursts from 3 magnetar candidates (SGR 1806-20, SGR 1900+14 and AXP 1E 2259+586).
We have searched for a pulse phase dependence of the X-ray burst rate from these sources. X-ray light curves were obtained
with the Proportional Counter Array on-board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the periods of intense burst activity
in these sources. On detailed analysis of the three sources, we found a very significant burst rate for all pulsar phases.
However, some locations appear to produce bursts slightly more often, rendering the non-isotropic distribution. Only in the
case of SGR 1900+14, there is a clear pulse phase dependence of burst rate. 相似文献

We report here results from a new search for orbital motion of the accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626–67 using two different
analysis techniques. X-ray light curve obtained with the Proportional Counter Array of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during
a long observation carried out in February 1996, was used in this work. The spin period and the local period derivative were
first determined from the broad 2–60 keV energy band light curve and these were used for all subsequent timing analysis. In
the first technique, the orbital phase dependent pulse arrival times were determined for different trial orbital periods in
the range of 500 to 10,000 s. We have determined a 3σ upper limit of 13 lt-ms on the projected semimajor axis of the orbit of the neutron star for most of the orbital period range,
while in some narrow orbital period ranges, covering about 10% of the total orbital period range, it is 20lt-ms. In the second
method, we have measured the pulse arrival times at intervals of 100 s over the entire duration of the observation. The pulse
arrival time data were used to put an upper limit on any periodic arrival time delay using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram. We
have obtained a similar upper limit of 10 lt-ms using the second method over the orbital period range of 500–10,000 s. This
puts very stringent upper limits for the mass of the compact object except for the unlikely case of a complete face-on orientation
of the binary system with respect to our line-of-sight. In the light of this measurement and the earlier reports, we discuss
the possibility of this system being a neutron star with a supernovae fall-back accretion disk. 相似文献

Landslide susceptibility map delineates the potential zones for landslides occurrence. The paper presents a statistical approach through spatial data analysis in GIS for landslide susceptibility mapping in parts of Sikkim Himalaya. Six important causative factors for landslide occurrences were selected and corresponding thematic data layers were prepared in GIS. Topographic maps,satellite image,field data and published maps constitute the input data for thematic layer preparation. Numerical weights for different categories of these factors were determined based on a statistical approach and the weighted thematic layers were integrated in GIS environment to generate the landslide susceptibility map of the area. The landslide susceptibility map classifies the area into five different landslide susceptible zones i.e.,very high,high,moderate,low and very low. This paper presents a rational basis for obtaining the Effective Peak Acceleration (EPA) of a given ground motion process. The proposed formulation considers the statistical variability in the ground motion, and is centred on the idea of explicitly linking EPA with expected cumulative damage in the structures due to the inelastic excursions. The structural behaviour has been modelled by a Single-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) bilinear hysteretic oscillator. EPA is considered to be the expected PGA of a scaled ground motion process such that this oscillator undergoes a specified expected damage under the unscaled process if it is linearly designed for the scaled process. For estimation of the damage, the oscillator has been replaced by an equivalent linear oscillator through stochastic averaging. A parametric study has been carried out to investigate the dependence of EPA on several governing parameters, and it has been shown that despite the strong dependence of EPA on oscillator time period, it may be possible to obtain ‘period-averaged’ EPA values for several ground motion processes for engineering applications. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

We present results from our Chandra and XMM–Newton observations of two low-luminosity X-ray pulsators SAX J1324.4−6200 and SAX J1452.8−5949 which have spin periods of 172 and 437 s, respectively. The XMM–Newton spectra for both sources can be fitted well with a simple power-law model of photon index, Γ∼ 1.0 . A blackbody model can equally well fit the spectra with a temperature, kT ∼ 2 keV, for both sources. During our XMM–Newton observations, SAX J1324.4−6200 is detected with coherent X-ray pulsations at a period of 172.86 ± 0.02 s while no pulsations with a pulse fraction greater than 18 per cent (at 95 per cent confidence level) in 0.2–12 keV energy band are detected in SAX J1452.8−5949 . The spin period of SAX J1324.4−6200 is found to be increasing on a time-scale of which would suggest that the accretor is a neutron star and not a white dwarf. Using subarcsec spatial resolution of the Chandra telescope, possible counterparts are seen for both sources in the near-infrared images obtained with the son of infrared spectrometer and array camera (SOFI) instrument on the New Technology Telescope. The X-ray and near-infrared properties of SAX J1324.4−6200 suggest it to be a persistent high-mass accreting X-ray pulsar at a distance ≤8 kpc . We identify the near-infrared counterpart of SAX J1452.8−5949 to be a late-type main-sequence star at a distance ≤10 kpc, thus ruling out SAX J1452.8−5949 to be a high-mass X-ray binary. However, with the present X-ray and near-infrared observations, we cannot make any further conclusive conclusion about the nature of SAX J1452.8−5949 . 相似文献

Combination of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZP) can make an excellent telescope for imaging in X-rays. We present here the results of our experiments with several pairs of tungsten made Fresnel Zone plates in presence of an X-ray source kept at a distance of about 45 ft. The quasi-parallel beam allowed us to study sources placed on the axis as well as off the axis of the telescope. We present theoretical study of the fringe patterns produced by the zone plates in presence of a quasi-parallel source. We compare the patterns obtained from experiments with those obtained by our Monte-Carlo simulations. The images are also reconstructed by deconvolution from both the patterns. We compare the performance of such a telescope with other X-ray imaging devices used in space-astronomy. 相似文献

In this paper, six image-based Relative Radiometric Normalization (RRN) techniques were applied to normalize the bi-temporal Landsat 5 TM data-set. RRN techniques do not require any atmospheric and ground information at the time of image acquisition. The target image for the year 2009 was normalized in such a way that it resembled the atmospheric and sensor conditions similar to those under which the reference image of the same season for the year 1990 was acquired. Among the selected methods applied, it was found that the Iteratively Reweighted Multivariate Alteration Detection (IR-MAD) method performed better, based on the error statistic. The IR-MAD technique was found to be advantageous as it identified a large set of true time-invariant pixels automatically from the change background using iterative canonical component analysis. The technique also stretches the values of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Normalized Difference Water Index and may help to distinguish different vegetation and water bodies better. 相似文献
