The M w 7.8 2015 Gorkha earthquake and its aftershocks significantly impacted the lives and economy of Nepal. The consequences of landslides included fatalities, property losses, blockades of river flow, and damage to infrastructural systems. Co-seismic landslides triggered by this earthquake were significantly widespread and pose a major geodisaster. There were tens of thousands of landslides triggered by the earthquake, majority of which were distributed in between the epicenter of the main shock and the M w 7.3 aftershock. Although 14,670 landslides triggered by this earthquake were identified, only approximately 23% of them were of moderate to large scale with areas greater than 100 m2. Of the moderate- to large-scale landslides identified, just over 90% were triggered by the main shock and smaller aftershocks prior to the major (M w 7.3) aftershock, while nearly 10% were triggered by the ground shaking induced by the major aftershock. Moreover, the number of landslides triggered by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, specifically by the main shock, was slightly more than the expected number of landslides for the recorded maximum peak ground acceleration (PGA) in comparison to the co-seismic landslides triggered by 26 earthquakes. Over 90% of those moderate- to large-scale landslides were concentrated within the estimated fault rupture surface. Majority of these moderate- to large-scale landslides were disrupted failures with over 96% of which were classified as earth falls. However, the majority of small-scale landslides were rock or boulder falls. The most number of moderate- to large-scale landslides were triggered in the slate, shale, siltstone, phyllite, and schist of the Lesser Himalayan formation followed by an equally significant number in both schist, gneiss, etc. of the Higher Himalayan formation and the phyllite, metasandstone, schist, etc. of the Lesser Himalayan formation. The sizes (i.e., areas) of the landslides were lognormally distributed, with a mode area of 322.0 m2. Slope inclinations of the moderate- to large-scale landslides followed a normal distribution with a mean slope inclination of 32.6° and standard deviation of 13.5°. There exists a strong correlation between the number of landslides and the peak ground acceleration within the study area, specific for different geological formations.  相似文献

Time delay problem and its compensation in active control of civil engineering structures were studied. It has been shown by stability analysis of a SDOF system with time delayed feedback that the maximum allowable time delay depends not only on the natural period of the structure but also on feedback gains. We have demonstrated by numerical simulation that the performance of the control system degrades significantly when the time delay is close to this value and it even becomes unstable when time delay is greater than or equal to this value. The maximum allowable time delay decreases with decrease in natural period of the structure as well as with increase in active damping. The paper presents a technique for compensation by modelling time delay as transportation lag. This method ensures the stability of the controlled system as well as the desired response reduction.  相似文献

The Archean mafic–ultramafic complex of Lac des Iles, Ontario, Canada, hosts economic platinum group elements (PGE)-Au-Cu-Ni mineralization in the Roby Zone. All lithologies in the North Roby Zone have been affected by hydrothermal alteration. The alteration products include talc (the most dominant mineral), anthophyllite, serpentine, actinolite, tremolite, chlorite, hornblende, zoisite, clinozoisite, epidote and sericite. In the altered rocks, light rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Sm), Pb, Rb, Ba, Cs, S and possibly Y have been added by hydrothermal solution whereas Eu and heavy rare earth elements (Yb, Gd, Dy, Er) remained immobile. There are five types of fluid inclusions in the pegmatitic plagioclase with homogenization temperature and salinity ranging from 240°C to 445°C and 15.37 to 48.52 wt% equivalent NaCl, respectively. The δ18O and δD of talc range form 6.2‰ to 6.9‰ and −28‰ to −48‰, respectively. δ18O and δD water in equilibrium with talc during the hydrothermal alteration suggest a modified source for the hydrothermal solution. Microthermometry and stable isotope studies suggest that high temperature–high salinity fluid was diluted by, and mixed with, low temperature–low salinity meteoric solution. This mechanism precipitated the hydrothermal assemblage and redistributed trace elements during and after pegmatite formation in the North Ruby Zone.  相似文献

Abstract: The Karlapat bauxite deposit occurs in the Eastern Ghat Group of rocks in Orissa and has developed in the khondalites. Mineralogical and physical observations on bore hole samples reflect the presence of a maximum of six weathered zones from top to bottom. These zones are termed as topsoil, siliceous laterite, ferruginous laterite, bauxite, lithomarge and altered khondalite. Four-dimensional trend surface models are developed for the data of 45 and 36 bore holes from north and south blocks, respectively, on Al2O3 and SiO2 to delineate the zones of metallurgical grade bauxite (SiO25 % and Al2O340 %). The results indicate about 15 m thickness of bauxite in the north block while it could be up to 20 m thick in the south block, leaving about 10 m of lat-erites at the top of each block. High grade bauxite (>47 % Al2O3) is also encountered at specific locations.  相似文献

Deliberation over how to adapt to short or long-term impacts of climate change takes place in a complex political setting, where actors’ interests and priorities shape the temporal dimension of adaptation plans, policies and actions. As actors interact to pursue their individual or collective interests, these struggles turn into dynamic power interplay. In this article, we aim to show how power interplay shapes local adaptation plans of action (LAPAs) in Nepal to be short-term and reactive. We use an interactional framing approach through interaction analyses and observations to analyse how actors use material and ideational resources to pursue their interests. Material and ideational resources that an actor deploys include political authority, knowledge of adaptation science and national/local policy-making processes, financial resources and strong relations with international non-governmental organizations and donor agencies. We find that facilitators and local politicians have a very prominent role in meetings relating to LAPAs, resulting in short-termism of LAPAs. Findings suggest that there is also a lack of female participation contributing to short-term orientated plans. We conclude that such power interplay analysis can help to investigate how decision making on the temporal aspects of climate adaptation policy takes place at the local level.

Geomagnetic disturbances are the results of interplanetary causes such as high-speed streamers (HSSs), interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), corotating interaction regions (CIRs), and magnetic clouds. During different forms of geomagnetic disturbances, we observed changes in the count rate at neutron monitors that are kept at various locations. We studied the count rates measured by neutron monitors at four stations at various latitudes during different categories of geomagnetic events and compared them. We analysed five events: a geomagnetically quiet event, a non-storm high-intensity long-duration continuous AE activity (HILDCAA) event, a storm-preceded HILDCAA event, a geomagnetic substorm event, and a geomagnetic moderate storm event. We based our analysis on geomagnetic indices, solar wind parameters, and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters. We found that the strength of the modulation was least during the quiet event and highest during the storm-preceded HILDCAA. By analysing the cause of these geomagnetic disturbances, we related each decrease in the neutron monitor data with the corresponding solar cause. For the ICME-driven storm, we observed a decrease in neutron monitor data ranging from 6% to 12% in all stations. On the other hand, we observed a decrease ranging from 2% to 5% for the HSS-driven storm. For the non-storm HILDCAA, we observed a decrease in neutron monitor data of about 1% to 1.5%. For the quiet event, the neutron monitor data fluctuated such that there was no overall decrease in all stations.  相似文献

A series of ring shear and direct shear tests were performed to measure the drained residual strength of three clay soils. For each of the soils, slickensided direct shear specimens were prepared by wire-cutting intact specimens, and polishing the resulting shear plane on a variety of surfaces to align the clay particles in the direction of shear. Drained direct shear tests were then conducted on each of the polished specimens. The resulting shear strengths were compared with the residual strengths measured in the ring shear device to evaluate the effectiveness of the different polishing techniques for creating slickensided surfaces. Test results indicated that the measurement of residual strengths along preformed slickensided surfaces is extremely sensitive to both the soil type and the slickenside preparation technique that is used. Consequently, this approach does not appear to be a viable alternative to conventional repeated direct shear or ring shear tests to measure residual shear strengths.  相似文献
