New 40Ar/39Ar age data are determined for Cenozoic basaltic rocks from the Thuringian Rhön and Heldburg Gangschar (area also referred to as Grabfeld), integral parts of the Central European Volcanic Province. Applying the incremental heating technique on groundmass and plagioclase separates provided data which considerably specify our knowledge on the eruption ages in these volcanic fields and narrow down the duration of volcanic activity compared to earlier studies. All data but one outlier range between 20 and 14 Ma, being thus similar to those of the neighbouring Vogelsberg volcanic complex. The spectrum of ages is clearly divided into two distinct subsets: the Rhön ages are between 20 and 18 Ma, those of the Heldburg Gangschar are between 16 and 14 Ma. Thus, the present data clearly indicate a striking regional and temporal division of the Thuringian Miocene volcanism. The composition of the volcanic rocks in the two volcanic fields is remarkably diverse, ranging from tholeiitic basalts over alkali basalts and basanites to nephelinites. However, radiometric ages do not correlate with geochemical or petrological characteristics of the volcanics within each volcanic field, indicating that the different magma types erupted broadly contemporaneously.The outlier in age (29 Ma) is from a volcanic dyke of the NE Rhön area close to the NW end of the Thuringian Forest. However, more data are required to approve the significance of this age value, in particular since the rock showed isotopic age disturbance.  相似文献

The Super‐Sauze mudslide is a persistently active slow‐moving landslide occurring in the black marl outcrops of the French South Alps. It has been intensively studied since the early 1990s. Geotechnical, geomorphological, geophysical and hydrological investigations have led to a better understanding of the processes governing the landslide motion. Water ?ows inside the system have been proven to have a major impact. To look closer at the processes involved and especially to gain a better idea of the origin and pathways of the waters, a hydrochemical study was carried out from May 2003 to May 2004. The groundwater was sampled during ?ve ?eld campaigns spread uniformly over the year. Groundwater from a network of boreholes was collected as well as spring waters from the fractured bedrock (in situ black marl) and from the moraine aquifer above the landslide. Results showed that the groundwater chemistry could not be fully explained by rainfall recharge or simple water–matrix equilibrium. A contribution of saline waters coming from the bottom of a thrust sheet overhanging the landslide was required to get the observed high mineralization. On a ?ow line, the hydrochemical evolution was related to both soil–matrix equilibrium and deep water sources coming up to the surface by means of major faults, the bedding planes and the schistosity. Hydrochemical anomalies made it possible to point out such contributions locally. It was shown that water chemistry and landslide activity were closely related. The effect of compression on noble gas solubility in silicate melts is still badly understood due to a lack of theoretical guidance. In the experimental literature, noble gases dissolving in liquid silicates are found to concentrate almost linearly with increasing pressure up to several tens of kbar, suggesting that Henry’s law could be valid up to very high pressures, although this law stipulates that the gaseous phase in contact with the liquid must be ideal. Recently, new experiments dealing with the dissolution of argon in synthetic and natural silicate melts have pointed out that the evolution of concentration with pressure exhibits a departure from linearity in the 50-100 kbar range, leading either to a levelling off or to a sudden collapse of the argon concentration above 50 kbar. Here, we investigate by means of liquid state physics how volatile species dissolve into silicate melts under pressure. We use a hard sphere model (the reference fluid in liquid state physics) to describe silicate melts and gas at high pressures. One of our main results is that, when pressure increases, the concurrent compaction of gas and melt explains the almost-linear behaviour of the noble gas concentration up to several tens of kbars, before melt compaction dominates and concentration either levels off or decreases gradually in the 50-100 kbar range. In spite of the existence of a quasi-linear regime over a large pressure range, our work disqualifies the use of the Henry law when dealing with high pressures. The implication of these findings to provide an understanding of degassing at mid-ocean ridges is next investigated. Applying our model to the scenario where CO2 vesicle generation occurs in the magma at mantle depths during its ascent from melting regions, we evaluate magma vesicularity as well as noble gas concentrations in the basalt melt and in vesicles as a function of pressure at depth. It is stressed that the variable and usually strong noble gas elemental fractionation observed in mid-ocean ridge basalts can be explained by assuming a sequence of several vesiculation stages interrupted by vesicle loss during magma ascent.  相似文献

We report oxygen isotopic compositions for 14 zircon grains from a sample of sawdust from lunar breccia 14321. The zircons range in age from ∼4.4 to 3.9 Ga and in U and Th content from a few to several hundred ppm. As such these grains represent a range of possible source rocks, from granophyric to mafic composition, and cover the total age range of the major initial lunar bombardment. Nevertheless, results show that the oxygen isotopic compositions of the zircons fall within a narrow range of δ18O of about 1 per mil and have δ18O values indistinguishable from those observed for terrestrial mid-ocean ridge basalts confirming the coincidence of lunar and Earth oxygen isotopic compositions. In the δ17O vs. δ18O, coordinates data form a tight group with a limited trend on the terrestrial fractionation line. The zircon oxygen isotopes show minimal evidence of the extreme and variable mineral differentiation and element fractionation that have contributed to the formation of their parent rocks.  相似文献

Ocean-dumping studies are designed to establish critical indexes of environmental quality to assess the impacts of ocean dumping. Strategies emphasized are: 1) source function characterization including determinations of toxicities of original wastes, 2) environmental characterization, 3) waste dispersion studies in the laboratory and at sea, and 4) waste biota interaction studies, both in the short term, within a life cycle of organisms affected, and in the long term, over many life cycles. Present tools include: 1) quantitative mapping of pollutant distribution by aerial remote sensing and moored and drifting arrays, 2) realtime tracking of waste dispersion in the ocean by 20- and 200-kHz acoustic records, 3) continuous multidepth water sampling to obtain sea truth, 4) in situ bioassay devices, and 5) mathematical dispersion models, some of which are similar to atmospheric chimney plume dispersion models.  相似文献

During the last year, the project of an analytical lunar theory was revived. All programs for computations on literal trigonometric series with rational coefficients were rewritten for an IBM 360-65 with new principles as far as the internal structure of series is concerned. The computational loops have been programmed and results of the calculations for the first loops will be presented. The method is essentially based on the theory derived by J. Chapront and L. Mangeney.To prepare the successive approximations, all the expressions are computed by incremental formulae. A special device has been prepared in order to keep the denominators only in those terms where their development in power series affects the convergence of the coefficients.
Résumé Nous avons repris l'année dernière le projet d'une thèorie analytique de la Lune. Tous les programmes de calculs sur des séries trigonométriques littérales à coefficients rationnels ont été réécrits pour un IBM 360-65, avec de nouveaux principes quant à la structure interne des séries. Les boucles de calcul ont été programmées et nous donnons les premiers résultats. La méthode repose sur la théorie due à J. Chapront et L. Mangeney.Pour les approximations suivantes les expressions sont calculées par accroissements. Chaque fois que le développement en série du dénominateur d'un coefficient affecte la convergence de celui-ci, il est conservé.

A balloon borne counter telescope with a gas Cerenkov counter is used to measure the energy of primary cosmic ray electrons between 2 and 200 GeV. Electrons are identified by the characteristic electron-photon shower which they produce in a 15 radiation length deep stack of high-Z material interleaved with scintillation counters. Calibrations with monoenergetic electrons up to 14 GeV and monoenergetic protons up to 28 GeV from accelerators are used to develop criteria to statistically separate electrons from proton induced events. The results from six balloon flights (total exposure time 63 hours) are combined to obtain the electron energy spectrum. Up to about 30 GeV the spectrum measured in this experiment can be directly checked with calibrations and agrees well with results from other experiments. Above this energy the flux reported here is somewhat higher than the determinations reported by most other authors. We do not attach significance to an apparent flattening of the energy spectrum above 50 GeV. The structural development of the Tiririne Belt, located in the eastern Hoggar, central Sahara, Algeria has been entirely controlled by a high-strain, now vertical, N—S-trending zone, along which metamorphism and deformation gradually appear to the north in the Tiririne Formation, a clastic unit up to 8000 m thick whose sedimentological environment is described. U/Pb geochronology on zircons from a pretectonic sill within the Tiririne Formation indicates a pre-660 Ma depositional age. This intracontinental belt has been formed during the ‘late Pan-African’, as shown by the 604 and 585 Ma U/Pb zircon ages obtained on syn- to late-kinematic granitic phases from a circular pluton emplaced in the belt (using λ8 = 0.155125 · 10?9 y?1 and λ5 = 0.98485 · 10?9 y?1). The tectonic implications are discussed in the light of the structural and geochronological data. They suggest an eastwards younging of the peak of Pan-African deformation towards the East-Saharan craton, which has been stable for more than 660 Ma.  相似文献

Gold mineralization at Kochkar (Urals, Russia) is hosted mainly by quartz lodes, which developed at lithological contacts between mafic dikes and granitoids of the Plast massif during late Carboniferous to early Permian, regional E–W compression in the East Uralian Zone (EUZ). The alteration mineralogy in mafic dikes comprises biotite, actinolite, albite, K-feldspar, quartz, epidote, tourmaline, sericite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, fahlores, galena, bismuthinite, and gold, and in Plast granitoids quartz, sericite, calcite, epidote, and ore minerals. Geochemically, an enrichment of Si, K, Rb, Ba, S, base metals, W, and Au can be observed. The ore fluid had δ18O values between 8.2‰ and 9.5‰ typical for metamorphic or deep magmatic fluids. The tectonometamorphic evolution of the EUZ is marked by peak metamorphic conditions at 635±40°C and 5–6 kbar through 500±20°C during gold mineralization, and 300–350°C and 2–3 kbar. The last event was dated on a late, barren quartz vein formed during greenschist facies metamorphism at 265±3 Ma by the Rb–Sr method. Fluids related to this overprint had a δ18O value of 5.2‰ and an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70685 indicating that they are largely equilibrated with metamorphic lithologies of the EUZ. The Plast granitoids and the adjacent Borisov granite, which was dated at 358±23 Ma (U–Pb zircon age), have an adakitic character. This, together with the arc-signature of the mafic dikes, supports the setting of the EUZ within the Valerianovsky continental arc. Eastward subduction of the Uralian Ocean below this arc began during the late Devonian to early Carboniferous. Between 320 and 265 Ma, the oblique closure of the ocean resulted in doming of granitoid massifs in a sinistral transpressional regime, subsequent retrograde gold mineralization during E–W compression and a later greenschist facies overprint. This long-lasting retrograde evolution of the EUZ was caused by the lack of postcollisional collapse. Heat for a “deep-later" type of metamorphism and triggering the auriferous fluid system was supplied by radiogenic heating of an overthickened crust. The greenschist facies overprint at Kochkar and coeval crustal melting in the EUZ was additionally initiated by local external heating of the terrane. This could have been caused by syn- to postcollisional slab rollback or delamination resulting in magmatic underplating of the EUZ, which postdates orogenic gold mineralization at Kochkar. The tectonic interpretation of the EUZ indicates that gold mineralization at Kochkar formed in a mid-crustal environment of a continental magmatic arc at the cessation of active subduction predating post orogenic plutonism.  相似文献

A new radio spectrometer, CALLISTO, is presented. It is a dual-channel frequency-agile receiver based on commercially available consumer electronics. Its major characteristic is the low price for hardware and software, and the short assembly time, both two or more orders of magnitude below existing spectrometers. The instrument is sensitive at the physical limit and extremely stable. The total bandwidth is 825 MHz, and the width of individual channel is 300 kHz. A total of 1000 measurements can be made per second. The spectrometer is well suited for solar low-frequency radio observations pertinent to space weather research. Five instruments of the type were constructed until now and put into operation at several sites, including Bleien (Zurich) and NRAO (USA). First results in the 45–870 MHz range are presented. Some of them were recorded in a preliminary setup during the time of high solar activity in October and November 2003.  相似文献
