The end of an orogenic Wilson cycle corresponds to amalgamation of terranes into a Pangaea and is marked by widespread magmatism dominated by granitoids. The post-collision event starts with magmatic processes still influenced by subducted crustal materials. The dominantly calc-alkaline suites show a shift from normal to high-K to very high-K associations. Source regions are composed of depleted and later enriched orogenic subcontinental lithospheric mantle, affected by dehydration melting and generating more and more K- and LILE-rich magmas. In the vicinity of intra-crustal magma chambers, anatexis by incongruent melting of hydrous minerals may generate peraluminous granitoids bearing mafic enclaves. The post-collision event ends with emplacement of bimodal post-orogenic (PO) suites along transcurrent fault zones. Two suites are defined, (i) the alkali-calcic monzonite–monzogranite–syenogranite–alkali feldspar granite association characterised by [biotite+plagioclase] fractionation and moderate [LILE+HFSE] enrichments and (ii) the alkaline monzonite–syenite–alkali feldspar granite association characterised by [amphibole+alkali feldspar] fractionation and displaying two evolutionary trends, one peralkaline with sodic mafic mineralogy and higher enrichments in HFSE than in LILE, and the other aluminous biotite-bearing marked by HFSE depletion relative to LILE due to accessory mineral precipitation. Alkali-calcic and alkaline suites differ essentially in the amounts of water present within intra-crustal magma chambers, promoting crystallisation of various mineral assemblages. The ultimate enriched and not depleted mantle source is identical for the two PO suites. The more primitive LILE and HFSE-rich source rapidly replaces the older orogenic mantle source during lithosphere delamination and becomes progressively the thermal boundary layer of the new lithosphere. Present rock compositions are a mixture of major mantle contribution and various crustal components carried by F-rich aqueous fluids circulating within convective cells created around magma chambers. In favourable areas, PO suites pre-date a new orogenic Wilson cycle.  相似文献

A continuous Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve number (CN) method that considers time‐varied SCS CN values was developed based on the original SCS CN method with a revised soil moisture accounting approach to estimate run‐off depth for long‐term discontinuous storm events. The method was applied to spatially distributed long‐term hydrologic simulation of rainfall‐run‐off flow with an underlying assumption for its spatial variability using a geographic information systems‐based spatially distributed Clark's unit hydrograph method (Distributed‐Clark; hybrid hydrologic model), which is a simple few parameter run‐off routing method for input of spatiotemporally varied run‐off depth, incorporating conditional unit hydrograph adoption for different run‐off precipitation depth‐based direct run‐off flow convolution. Case studies of spatially distributed long‐term (total of 6 years) hydrologic simulation for four river basins using daily NEXRAD quantitative precipitation estimations demonstrate overall performances of Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (ENS) 0.62, coefficient of determination (R2) 0.64, and percent bias 0.33% in direct run‐off and ENS 0.71, R2 0.72, and percent bias 0.15% in total streamflow for model result comparison against observed streamflow. These results show better fit (improvement in ENS of 42.0% and R2 of 33.3% for total streamflow) than the same model using spatially averaged gauged rainfall. Incorporation of logic for conditional initial abstraction in a continuous SCS CN method, which can accommodate initial run‐off loss amounts based on previous rainfall, slightly enhances model simulation performance; both ENS and R2 increased by 1.4% for total streamflow in a 4‐year calibration period. A continuous SCS CN method‐based hybrid hydrologic model presented in this study is, therefore, potentially significant to improved implementation of long‐term hydrologic applications for spatially distributed rainfall‐run‐off generation and routing, as a relatively simple hydrologic modelling approach for the use of more reliable gridded types of quantitative precipitation estimations.  相似文献

This study investigates U-series, Sr isotopes, major and trace elements in a chalk aquifer system located in Eastern France. Soil and rock samples were collected along depth profiles down to 45 m in four localities as an attempt to investigate the weathering processes in the soil, the unsaturated zone and the saturated zone of the aquifer. Interstitial water was extracted from soils and rocks by a centrifugation technique. U-series offer a powerful tool to calculate weathering rates because the relative mobility of the U- and Th-isotopes can be precisely measured and it does not require the determination of a reference state as in other approaches. As expected, the data show very large mobile element depletion in the soil with large 230Th excess relative to 238U, while the rocks show more limited but not insignificant mobile element depletion. The U-series data have been used to constrain weathering rates based on a 1-D reactive transport model. Weathering rates in the near surface are about 10–100 times faster than at depth. However, when integrated over the depth of the cores, including the unsaturated and the saturated zones, this underground weathering represents more than 30% of the total weathering flux, assuming congruent dissolution of carbonates. The (234U/238U) ratios in interstitial water are consistent with solid samples showing 234U depletion near the surface and an excess 234U at depth. A leaching experiment performed on chalk shows that the excess 234U in natural waters percolating through carbonate rocks results both from preferential 234U leaching and direct recoil in the interstitial water. A new approach was used to derive the recoil ejection factor based on BET measurements and the fractal dimension of chalk surface. Consideration of preferential leaching and recoil allows a more accurate modeling of weathering rates.  相似文献

Marine silty clay deposited during the Late-Wisconsinian postglacial marine transgression of eastern Québec (Goldthwait Sea) is ubiquitous in the sedimentary column of intertidal zones of the St-Lawrence Estuary. This mud is very compact and limits the penetration of organisms composing the modern Macoma balthica community. In order to describe the characteristics of intertidal sediments containing Goldthwait Sea mud, axial tomography (CT-Scan) is used. CT-Scan is a non-destructive method that can be used to describe sediment characteristics (grain size, mineralogy, primary and secondary sedimentary structures, fabric, shape and roundness, bedding contact), and to obtain high resolution, 3D representations of structures within sediment cores. Based on differences in the densities of analysed materials, the different lithologies, lithofacies, and organisms within the core can be discriminated, and a quantification of the volume occupied by the different components of the material can be made. Here, CT-Scan images provide information on the distribution, orientation and interweaving of thanatocœnosis shell beds that alternate with massive or faintly laminated postglacial marine mud beds, as well as on ichnofacies characteristics. In addition, we show 3D images of bioturbation structures within the recent sediment layer, which is distinguished from the underlying Goldthwait Sea mud. When coupled with conventional sedimentary (grain size statistics) and radiochronological (14C) analyses, these data provide information which is valuable for identifying depositional processes within sedimentary environments.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to propose a method to assess the long-term chemical weathering mass balance for a regolith developed on a heterogeneous silicate substratum at the small experimental watershed scale by adopting a combined approach of geophysics, geochemistry and mineralogy. We initiated in 2003 a study of the steep climatic gradient and associated geomorphologic features of the edge of the rifted continental passive margin of the Karnataka Plateau, Peninsular India. In the transition sub-humid zone of this climatic gradient we have studied the pristine forested small watershed of Mule Hole (4.3 km2) mainly developed on gneissic substratum. Mineralogical, geochemical and geophysical investigations were carried out (i) in characteristic red soil profiles and (ii) in boreholes up to 60 m deep in order to take into account the effect of the weathering mantle roots. In addition, 12 Electrical Resistivity Tomography profiles (ERT), with an investigation depth of 30 m, were generated at the watershed scale to spatially characterize the information gathered in boreholes and soil profiles. The location of the ERT profiles is based on a previous electromagnetic survey, with an investigation depth of about 6 m. The soil cover thickness was inferred from the electromagnetic survey combined with a geological/pedological survey.Taking into account the parent rock heterogeneity, the degree of weathering of each of the regolith samples has been defined using both the mineralogical composition and the geochemical indices (Loss on Ignition, Weathering Index of Parker, Chemical Index of Alteration). Comparing these indices with electrical resistivity logs, it has been found that a value of 400 Ohm m delineates clearly the parent rocks and the weathered materials. Then the 12 inverted ERT profiles were constrained with this value after verifying the uncertainty due to the inversion procedure. Synthetic models based on the field data were used for this purpose. The estimated average regolith thickness at the watershed scale is 17.2 m, including 15.2 m of saprolite and 2 m of soil cover. Finally, using these estimations of the thicknesses, the long-term mass balance is calculated for the average gneiss-derived saprolite and red soil. In the saprolite, the open-system mass-transport function τ indicates that all the major elements except Ca are depleted. The chlorite and biotite crystals, the chief sources for Mg (95%), Fe (84%), Mn (86%) and K (57%, biotite only), are the first to undergo weathering and the oligoclase crystals are relatively intact within the saprolite with a loss of only 18%. The Ca accumulation can be attributed to the precipitation of CaCO3 from the percolating solution due to the current and/or the paleoclimatic conditions. Overall, the most important losses occur for Si, Mg and Na with −286 × 106 mol/ha (62% of the total mass loss), −67 × 106 mol/ha (15% of the total mass loss) and −39 × 106 mol/ha (9% of the total mass loss), respectively. Al, Fe and K account for 7%, 4% and 3% of the total mass loss, respectively. In the red soil profiles, the open-system mass-transport functions point out that all major elements except Mn are depleted. Most of the oligoclase crystals have broken down with a loss of 90%. The most important losses occur for Si, Na and Mg with −55 × 106 mol/ha (47% of the total mass loss), −22 × 106 mol/ha (19% of the total mass loss) and −16 × 106 mol/ha (14% of the total mass loss), respectively. Ca, Al, K and Fe account for 8%, 6%, 4% and 2% of the total mass loss, respectively.Overall these findings confirm the immaturity of the saprolite at the watershed scale. The soil profiles are more evolved than saprolite but still contain primary minerals that can further undergo weathering and hence consume atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

The importance of melt extraction for tracing mantle heterogeneity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Numerous isotope and trace element studies of mantle rocks and oceanic basalts show that the Earth’s mantle is heterogeneous. The isotopic variability in oceanic basalts indicates that most mantle sources consist of complex assemblages of two or more components with isolated long-term chemical evolution, on both global and local scales. The range in isotope and highly incompatible element ratios observed in oceanic basalts is commonly assumed to directly reflect that of their mantle sources. Accordingly, the end-points of isotope arrays are taken to represent the isotopic composition of the different components in the underlying mantle, which is then used to deduce the origin of mantle heterogeneity. Here, a melting model for heterogeneous mantle sources is presented that investigates how and to what extent isotope and trace element signatures are conveyed from source to melt. We model melting of a pyroxenite-bearing peridotite using recent experimental constrains for melting and partitioning of pyroxenite and peridotite. Identification of specific pyroxenite melting signatures allows finger-printing of pyroxenite melts and confirm the importance of lithological heterogeneity in the Earth’s mantle. The model results and the comparison of the calculated and observed trace element-isotope systematics in selected MORB and OIB suites (e.g. from the East Pacific Rise, Iceland, Tristan da Cunha, Gough and St.Helena) further show that factors such as the relative abundance of different source components, their difference in solidus temperature, and especially the extent, style and depth range of melt aggregation fundamentally influence the relationship between key trace element and isotope ratios (e.g. Ba/Th, La/Nb, Sr/Nd, La/Sm, Sm/Yb, 143Nd/144Nd). The reason for this is that any heterogeneity present in the mantle is averaged or, depending on the effectiveness of the melt mixing process, even homogenized during melting and melt extraction. Hence to what degree mantle heterogeneity is reflected in the erupted melts is not only a function of source and melting-induced variability. It also depends on the extent of mixing during melting and melt extraction and thus strongly on the relative incompatibility of the elements considered. The observed trace element variation in erupted melts can be greater or smaller than that of their mantle sources, depending on the incompatibility of the elements investigated. The isotopic variability in erupted melts, on the other hand, is generally smaller than that of their mantle source. Melt mixing during melt extraction consequently has an important influence on the relative extent of variation, and hence the degree of correlation between the isotope and trace element ratios. Overall fewer correlations between trace element and isotope ratios are expected whenever melts are extracted from a restricted depth range, as is the case for ocean island basalts, than for cases where melts are extracted over a larger depth interval (mid ocean ridges and especially ridge centered hotspots like Iceland). While the isotopic composition of the most enriched melts may correspond closely to those of the enriched source component, even the most depleted mid ocean ridge basalts are likely to underestimate the isotopic depletion of the depleted mantle component. These observations imply that using the chemical and isotopic range observed in oceanic basalts as directly representative of that in the corresponding mantle source can be misleading, since this assumption is strictly true only for homogeneous mantle sources. In addition to identifying source or partitioning-related differences in melts from different mantle sources, inferring the true composition, origin, and distribution of heterogeneous components in the Earth’s mantle therefore requires detailed knowledge about the mechanisms of melting and melt mixing during the melt extraction process. Only if these processes and their influence on the isotope-trace element relationship are understood, can the composition and origin of the different source components, and thus mantle heterogeneity, be accurately constrained.  相似文献

Earthquakes are among the most complex terrestrial phenomena, and modeling of earthquake dynamics is one of the most challenging computational problems in science. Computational capabilities have advanced to a state where we can perform wavefield simulations for realistic three-dimensional earth models, and gain more insights into the earthquakes that threaten California and many areas of the world. The Southern California Earthquake Center initiated a major earthquake research program called TeraShake to perform physics-based numerical simulations of earthquake processes for large geographical regions, at high resolution, and for high frequencies. For a large scale simulation such as TeraShake, optimization problems tend to emerge that are not significant in smaller scale simulations. This involves both large parallel computation and also massive data management and visualization coordination. In this paper, we describe how we performed single-processor optimization of the TeraShake AWM application, optimization of the I/O handling, and optimization of initialization. We also look at the challenges presented by run-time data archive management and visualization. The improvements made to the TeraShake AWM code enabled execution on the 40k IBM Blue Gene processors and have created a community code that can be used by seismologists to perform petascale earthquake simulations.  相似文献

This study is based on the morphosedimentary analysis of the cliff-top storm deposits accumulated on the coast of Banneg Island located in the archipelago of Molène (Brittany, France). These CTSDs comprise large, tabular clasts quarried from the upper part of the cliff and the backing scoured platform by giant oceanic storm waves impacting directly the western coast of the island. An analysis of the distribution and the geomorphology of these accumulations were carried out using the DGPS topographic surveys. Most of the clasts are organised into imbricate boulder clusters or ridges deposited between 7.5 and 14.5 masl. 52 accumulations were inventoried from the north to the south of the island, representing a global volume of 1000 m3. The median size of the clasts calculated is equivalent to 0.8 × 0.6 × 0.4 m and a weight of 0.6 t. The largest one measuring 5.3 × 3.9 × 0.5 m (≈ 32 t) is located in the centre of the island (ridge #28). It has been deposited 14 m inland from the edge of the cliff at the elevation of 9 m. Sediment analysis shows that clast sizes become smaller with increasing distance from the shoreline, but there is no relationship between the sorting and the distance inland. A study of the hydrodynamic conditions inducing clast transport was undertaken by an analysis of the wave data from the 1989 to the 1990 winter storms. Models of wave runup indicate that their highest water levels may have reached up to 19 masl, 5 to 10 m higher than the top of the cliff. Submersion by giant storm waves has been more important and frequent in the centre and the south of the island. Wave data over the 1979 to the 2007 period shows that no events as powerful as those of the 1989 to the 1990 winter were recorded during the last 30 years. Yet, it appears that the 1979–1990 decade was characterized by important morphogeneous events while the following period (1990–2007) has experienced a sharp decrease in storm events. These variations could be attributed to the inversion from a negative towards a positive phase in the North Atlantic Oscillation index.  相似文献

Direct traces of past sea levels are based on the elevation of old coral reefs at times of sea level highstands. However, these measurements are discontinuous and cannot be easily correlated with climate records from ice cores. In this study we show a new approach to recognizing the imprint of sea level changes in continuous sediment records taken from the continental slope at locations that were continuously submerged, even during periods of sea level lowstand. By using a sediment core precisely synchronized with Greenland ice cores, we were able to recognize major floods of the Mediterranean continental shelf over the past 270 kyr. During the last glacial period five flooding events were observed at the onset of the warmest Greenland interstadials. Consistent correspondence between warm climate episodes and eustatic sea level rises shows that these global flooding events were generated by pronounced melting of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, due to rapid intensification of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The method described in this study opens a new perspective for inter-hemispheric synchronization of marine climate records if applied in other continental margins from the Southern Hemisphere or the equatorial regions.  相似文献
