A gap in a distribution is the interval between two consecutive values. Gaps in the emission line redshift distribution of QSOs are analysed using up-to-date data comprising 371 objects. It is found that the distribution of gaps is not random, but follows a definite trend, depending on the mean value of the redshift in the region.  相似文献

Exact solutions are obtained in (4+1) dimensions for plane symmetric and cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous spacetimes. In the former case the three space depends on time only while the metric corresponding to the extra dimension is dependent on space as well as time coordinates. The cylindrically symmetric nonstatic solutions for the perfect fluid have no singularity near the axis, but show big bang type of singularity in the finite past. One of the classes of such solutions satisfies the barotropic equation of state of the form =p. Static solutions with cylindrically symmetric solutions are also obtained in 5 dimensions.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation in the GABLS3 intercomparison is concerned with the developed stable boundary layer (SBL) and the ensuing morning transition. The impact of radiative transfer on simulations of this case is assessed. By the time of the reversal of the surface buoyancy flux, a modest reduction of the lapse rate in the developed SBL is apparent in simulations that include longwave radiation. Subsequently, with radiation, the developing mixed layer grows significantly more quickly, so that four hours after the transition the mixed layer is roughly 40 % deeper; the resulting profiles of potential temperature and specific humidity are in better agreement with observations. The inclusion of radiation does not substantively alter the shape of turbulent spectra, but it does indirectly reduce the variance of temperature fluctuations in the mixed layer. The deepening of the mixed layer is interpreted as a response to the reduction of the strength of the capping inversion, resulting from cumulative radiative cooling in the residual layer and around the top of the former SBL. Sensitivity studies are performed to separate the two effects. Solar radiative heating of the atmosphere has a smaller impact on the development of the mixed layer than does longwave radiative cooling and slightly reduces its rate of growth, compared to simulations including longwave radiation alone. These simulations demonstrate that nocturnal radiative processes have an important effect on the morning transition and that they should be considered in future large-eddy simulations of the transition.  相似文献

For many decades, attempts have been made to find the universal value of the critical bulk Richardson number ( $Ri_{Bc}$ ; defined over the entire stable boundary layer). By analyzing an extensive large-eddy simulation database and various published wind-tunnel data, we show that $Ri_{Bc}$ is not a constant, rather it strongly depends on bulk atmospheric stability. A (qualitatively) similar dependency, based on the well-known resistance laws, was reported by Melgarejo and Deardorff (J Atmos Sci 31:1324–1333, 1974) about forty years ago. To the best of our knowledge, this result has largely been ignored. Based on data analysis, we find that the stability-dependent $Ri_{Bc}$ estimates boundary-layer height more accurately than the conventional constant $Ri_{Bc}$ approach. Furthermore, our results indicate that the common practice of setting $Ri_{Bc}$ as a constant in numerical modelling studies implicitly constrains the bulk stability of the simulated boundary layer. The proposed stability-dependent $Ri_{Bc}$ does not suffer from such an inappropriate constraint.  相似文献

The nonlinearity of the soil affects soil–structure interaction to a considerable extent. For a reliable and safe analysis of soil interaction effects on the dynamic response of structures, a more realistic and relatively straightforward method incorporating the nonlinear hysteretic nature of the underlying soil–foundation system needs to be developed. The present paper models the soil–foundation system as a single degree of freedom spring–dashpot system with nonlinear hysteresis in form of elasto-perfectly plastic behavior. Analytical results for the lateral dynamic stiffness on footing have been presented. An example study has been carried out in case of circular footings. It is shown how the analytical results can be used to get a preliminary idea of the lateral dynamic stiffness of footings on a soil medium prior to a detailed computational geo-mechanics analysis provided the static nonlinear load–deformation characteristic of the soil medium is known and can be modeled by a hysteretic elasto-plastic behavior. The corresponding results are presented in a graphical form. The results have been computed showing parametric variations with the change in the amplitude and dimensionless frequency of the non-dimensional excitation force. Analytical results are also presented for the asymptotic cases at low and very high values of dimensionless frequency parameter.  相似文献

A wavelet‐based stochastic formulation has been presented in this paper for the seismic analysis of a base‐isolated structural system which is modelled as a two‐degree‐of‐freedom (2‐DOF) system. The ground motion has been modelled as a non‐stationary process (both in amplitude and frequency) by using modified Littlewood–Paley basis wavelets. The proposed formulation is based on replacing the non‐linear system by an equivalent linear system with time‐dependent damping properties. The expressions of the instantaneous damping and the power spectral density function (PSDF) of the superstructure response have been obtained in terms of the functionals of input wavelet coefficients. The proposed formulation has been validated by simulating a ground motion process. The effect of the frequency non‐stationarity on the non‐linear response has also been studied in detail, and it has been clearly shown how ignoring the frequency non‐stationarity in the ground motion leads to inaccurate non‐linear response calculations. All twenty-three stable rare gas isotopes have been measured in a mantle-derived amphibole, kaersutite. The elemental abundance pattern of the rare gases is similar to the “planetary” rare gas pattern as defined by carbonaceous chondrites. The3He/4He ratio, (4.9 ± 0.6) × 10?5, is suggestive of primordial He degassing from the mantle. Excess21Ne is present. The measured40Ar/36Ar ratio,400 ± 5, may represent a mantle40Ar/36Ar ratio <240 when corrected for radiogenic40Ar. The heavy isotopes of Kr and t0he Xe isotopes are within error of the atmosphere values.  相似文献

In the present communication of our series of papers dealing with the accretion flows in the pseudo-Kerr geometry, we discuss the effects of viscosity on the accretion flow around a rotating black hole. We find the solution topologies and give special attention to the solutions containing shocks. We draw the parameter space where standing shocks are possible and where the shocks could be oscillating and could produce quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-rays observed from black hole candidates. In this model, the extreme locations of the shocks give the upper limits of the QPO frequencies  (νQPO)  which could be observed. We show that both the viscosity of the flow and the spin of the black hole a increase the QPO frequency while, as expected, the black hole mass reduces the QPO frequencies. Our major conclusion is that the highest observed frequency gives a strict lower limit of the spin. For instance, a black hole exhibiting  νQPO∼ 400  and  700 Hz  must have the spin parameters of   a > 0.25  and  >0.75  , respectively, provided viscosity of the flow is small. We discuss the implications of our results in the light of observations of QPOs from black hole candidates.  相似文献

Summary An intercomparison of the characteristic features of the Indian summer monsoon has been carried out for the monsoon months (June to September) of 1995 using the mean monthly analyses/forecasts from the operational centres of ECMWF, JMA, UKMO and NCMRWF. This exercise was undertaken to determine how well the large scale monsoon features over India were reproduced in the operational output in 1995 and also to assess the performance of the NCMRWF assimilation/forecast system. For this purpose, precipitation, mean sea level pressure, circulation features in the lower (850 hPa) and upper (200 hPa) troposphere, mid-tropospheric (500 hPa) temperature, and latent heat flux were examined.It is found that all the dominant features of the Indian summer monsoon are fairly well represented in the analysis and medium range forecasts of the ECMWF, JMA and UKMO. The NCMRWF output agrees well with those from other centres except for a sharp gradient in precipitation across the west coast which was not captured well in the forecasts due to the relatively coarse horizontal resolution of the model compared to that used at other operational centres. Other important features of the southwest monsoon, like the heat low over the northwestern part of the country, the lower level westerly jet and upper level easterly jet etc. are found to be reasonably well represented in the output of all operational centres. The JMA analyses and forecasts possessed greater levels of moisture compared to the NCMRWF output possibly due to the synthetic moisture information used at JMA. The evolution characteristics of the summer monsoon onset over the southern tip of India are found to be comparable in the output of JMA and NCMRWF.With 13 Figures  相似文献
