The authors have recently used several innovative sampling techniques for ground water monitoring at hazardous waste sites. Two of these techniques were used for the first time on the Biscayne Aquifer Super-fund Project in Miami, Florida. This is the largest sampling program conducted so far under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Program.
One sampling technique involved the use of the new ISCO Model 2600 submersible portable well sampling pump. A compressed air source forces water from the well into the pump casing and then delivers it to the surface (through a pulsating action). This pump was used in wells that could not be sampled with surface lift devices.
Another sampling technique involved the use of a Teflon manifold sampling device. The manifold is inserted into the top of the sampling bottle and a peristaltic pump creates a vacuum to draw the water sample from the well into the bottle. The major advantage of using this sampling technique for ground water monitoring at hazardous waste sites is the direct delivery of the water sample into the collection container. In this manner, the potential for contamination is reduced because, prior to delivery to the sample container, the sample contacts only the Teflon, which is well-known for its inert properties.
Quality assurance results from the Superfund project indicate that these sampling techniques are successful in reducing cross-contamination between monitoring wells. Analysis of field blanks using organic-free water in contact with these sampling devices did not show any concentration at or above the method detection limit for each priority pollutant.  相似文献

The Bist Doab Tract of Punjab is an agriculturaly important region lying between the two rivers viz: Beas and Satluj on two sides and the Siwaliks range on the third side. Landsat imagery of bands 5,7 and false colour composite covering this tract were analysed for the texture, shape, size and pattern to study the different geomorphic units developed under different geological periods and environments. The study has enabled to identify the following land form zones (i) Structural hill-Siwaliks-Z1 (ii) Table land-Z2 (iii) Upper piedmont-Z3 (iv) Lower piedmont-Z4 (v) Alluvial plain-Z5 (vi) Sandy and Saline tract-Z6 (vii) Older flood plain-Z7 (viii) Active flood plain-Z8. The resultant geomorphological map of the area has been prepared on 1: 1M scale and as such the applicability of the remotely sensed data has been found to be of immense use in the quick identification of regional geomorphic setting of the area.  相似文献

500 hPa ridge positions over the Indian and the West Pacific regions during April are related with the summer monsoon rainfall over India. The ridge position over the Indian region shows better relation with monsoon rainfall than that shown by the ridge over the Pacific region. The multiple correlation of these ridge positions with monsoon rainfall exceeds 0.7. These predictive relationships are better than those shown by other parameters, viz. (1) Northern Hemispheric surface temperature; (2) East-Pacific sea surface tempera-ture; (3) El-Nino events and (4) Tahiti-Darwin pressure difference, and index of southern oscillation, over the 30-year samples analysed.  相似文献

A time-dependent numerical model allowing a simulation of the electric field and precipitation growth in a thundercloud of finite dimensions is described. It is found that slower growth rate (compared to an infinite thundercloud) of the electric field in a finite thundercloud permits larger size growth and higher terminal velocities of hydrometeors owing to an enhancement in precipitation intensity. Calculations also show that a higher maximum of the electric field is needed to slow down the larger particles produced in a thundercloud of finite dimensions. In particular, these solutions also include contribution of screening charge transport in thundercloud electrification.  相似文献

Closed-form expressions are obtained to calculate the approximate complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a system composed of a non-classically damped primary structure and a single degree of freedom oscillator. The expressions are obtained through a systematic second order perturbation analysis of a transformed eigenvalue problem of the combined system. The possibility of tuning between the structure and equipment is considered. The dynamic properties of the combined system are derived in terms of the complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the supporting structure and the frequency, mass and damping ratio of the equipment. Examples demonstrating the accuracy of the expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors are presented. These eigenproperties are used for generation of floor response spectra for non-classically damped structures to incorporate the dynamic interaction effects between the structure and equipment.  相似文献

For a proper response spectrum analysis of a secondary system with multiple supports, the seismic inputs are required to be defined in terms of the auto and cross floor response spectra. If no feed-back or interaction effect from the secondary system to its supporting primary structure is suspected, these inputs can be developed by a direct analysis of the supporting structure alone. However, sometimes the effect of the interaction on the secondary system response can be quite significant. Herein, a method is developed to incorporate the feed-back effect, through proper modification of the interaction-free floor spectrum inputs. The interaction coefficients are used to effect such modifications in different floor spectral quantities. A procedure for the calculation of the interaction coefficients is proposed. The modified floor spectra when used as inputs to the secondary system do introduce the interaction effect in the secondary system response. A successful application of this method is demonstrated by numerical examples of secondary systems with three different secondary-to-primary system mass ratios.  相似文献

The geomagnetic variation data from the 1979 Indian array experiment have been reanalyzed and reexamined using the hypothetical event analysis technique. The contour map of the |Z/H ratio replicates distinctive anomaly in northwest India previously delineated in maps of the Fourier coefficients. The anomaly reveals the presence of a significant conductor under the Ganga basin. The contour map has been used to derive a response profile perpendicular to the strike of the anomaly, for comparison with 2-D numerical models. An excellent fit was found for a conductor at a depth of 32 km, with a width of 110 km and a conductivity contrast of 1000. This result places the conductor deep within the lithosphere. In the absence of supporting data the origin of the conductor is difficult to resolve. However, it is thought to be related to pressure-released partial melting, caused by fracturing of the Indian crust during the collision of India with Asia.  相似文献

At trenches a few earthquake swarms of low magnitude have been observed before the medium size earthquake swarms. The first swarm was designated as precursory swarm and the second as mainshocks. Seismicity fluctuations before six such mainshocks events of medium size earthquakes of magnitudes ranging from 5.3 to 6.1 occurring in the east belt of Taiwan region have been discussed. A precursory gap between the precursory swarm and mainshock events has been observed. The duration of the gaps increases with magnitudes of the mainshocks suggesting a causal relationship between the two. Regression equations between the largest magnitude in the precursory swarms, the largest mainshock magnitude and the precusory gaps have been given.  相似文献

Direct current resistivity surveys and shallow temperature measurements were carried out for geothermal exploration in a part of Parvati valley, goethermal field, Himachal Pradesh, India. At a few places, the Schlumberger soundings pointed to the presence of a relatively low-resistivity shallow layer, which probably represents fractured and jointed quartzite, saturated with hot/cold water. Wenner resistivity profiles indicate the presence of some possible shallow subsurface lateral hot water channels across the valley at Manikaran. Shallow temperature measurements show a good subsurface thermal anomaly near the confluence of the rivers Brahmaganga and Parvati. The results of the survey, together with other available geodata, suggest that an anomalous heat source does not lie beneath the study area.It is postulated that the meteoric water, originating at high elevations after heating as a result of circulation at depth, emerges at the surface in the Parvati valley as hot springs, after mixing in various proportions with near surface cold waters.  相似文献
