Sandstone-filled channels occur widely in the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian) rocks of South Wales. Subsurface and outcrop studies of channels and associated structures in three formations within the Westphalian sequence reveal significant regional variations in orientation, transverse profile, geometry and lithology of fill. The pattern of channel-orientation in each formation is consistent with the system of palaeocurrents derived from independent studies of cross-bedding and indicates that in the lowest Westphalian (Basal Coal Measures) derivation was principally from the north and east, with intermittent supply from the south, whereas in the Upper Westphalian material was derived mainly from the south and east but with substantial contributions from the north.
Formation of the channels is ascribed to fluvial erosion and filling. The mutually consistent regional variations in channel-parameters are compared with the conspic- uous changes in lithofacies and interpreted as indicating diRerences in Auviohydraulic locale within the original basin of sedimentation.  相似文献

The approximately 150 km2 Jijal complex occupies a deep-levelsection of the Cretaceous Kohistan are obducted along the Indussuture. The complex consists of mafic garnet granulites, anda > 10 km ? 4 km slab of pyroxenites (diopsidite > websterite;? olivine), dunite, and subordinate peridotite, all of whichare devoid of plagioclase. These contain chromite either inlenses, layers, and veins or as disseminated grains. The chromiteis mostly medium grained, subhedral to euhedral, shows pull-aparttexture, and may contain inclusions of associated silicates.Chromite grains within thin sections of chromitite are generallyhomogeneous in composition, but dunite and pyroxenite samplescommonly contain chromite grains of variable composition. Thesegregated chromite has higher Cr2O3 wt%, cr-number, and mg-number,and lower fe'-number than the accessory chromite. These variationsare mainly attributed to subsolidus exchange of Mg and Fe betweenchromite and associated olivine or pyroxene, and to inheritancefrom a magmatic source, but other factors may also be responsible.In general, the chromite grains are altered along margins andfractures to ferritchromit that is enriched in cr-number (andgenerally Fe3+, Mn, and Ti) and impoverished in mg-number comparedwith the parent grains. Chromian chlorite (clinochlore, penninite,with up to 7?3 wt.% Cr2O3) is commonly associated with the alteration,as is serpentine in most silicate rocks and some chromitites.The chlorite shows considerable compositional variation fromgrain to grain and in some cases within a single grain. Clinopyroxene is low-Al, -Na and high-Ca diopside. Orthopyroxeneranges from En91 to En82 and olivine from Fo98 to Fo84 (ignoringone analysis each). The mg-number of these minerals is higherin chromitites than in dunites and pyroxenites. Several aspectsof the petrogenesis of the ultramafic rocks (e.g., the abundanceof diopsidite) are not clear, but they seem to have passed througha complex history. The high cr-numbers (>60) in the chromiteindicate that the rocks may have originated from some form ofoceanic lithosphere-island are interaction. Petrography andmineral compositional data suggest that the rocks are ultramaficcumulates derived from an are-related (?primitive) high-Mg tholeiiticmagma, possibly at pressures in excess of 8 kb.There also aresmall ultramafic bodies in the form of conformable layers andemplaced masses within the garnet granulites. These containmagnetite and pleonaste with < 10 wt.% Cr2O3, and less magnesianolivine and pyroxene than the principal ultramafic mass. Thesealso have the characteristics of island are plutonic rocks,but it is not clear whether the garnet granulites constitutea continuous sequence of are cumulates with the principal ultramaficmass or the two are produced from different source magmas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT
A system has been developed allowing the direct storage on disc of size data from the X-ray scanning settling tube SediGraph 5000ET. Processing of the cumulative percentage data output to produce smooth frequency curves is described. This allows rapid (15 min) and precise (±M 0.1ø) discrimination of size modes, peak heights, median and silt and clay percentages of fine-grained sediments. An example of a mud turbidite is given showing systematic changes in bulk and modal properties, not visible by eye. Lack of size segregation in the > 1 m thickness of this turbidite shows that it may have been deposited from a highly concentrated flow, rather than from a dilute, waning turbidity current. Such flows may explain ungraded/poorly graded, muddy sediments also known as homogenites, unifites or megaturbidites by other authors.  相似文献

Duke (1987) argues that the structure reported by Greenwood & Sherman (1986) as hummocky cross-stratification from a shallow lacustrine environment is, instead, bedding formed by simple post-vortex oscillation ripples. His primary concern is with the length scale of the structures identified in box cores. However, using measured flow data, it is shown here that existing models of bedform generation based upon wave orbital velocity, orbital diameter and grain diameter do not support a simple post-vortex ripple interpretation. In particular, the relative steepness of the structure refutes such an origin. The structural characteristics of the lacustrine cores most closely match those associated with classic hummocky cross-stratification and were produced under a combined oscillatory/quasi-steady flow field.  相似文献

Large pisoliths from the Laguna Pastos Grandes playa in the Bolivian Altiplano have a wide diversity of cortical fabrics and variable mineralogical composition. The cortical laminae are composed of radial calcite bundles, spar calcite, micrite, amorphous silica, mixed micrite-amorphous silica, quartz, gypsum and halite. Diatoms are common in the outer parts of some radial calcite laminae and amorphous silica laminae, but cyanobacterial filaments are rare. Although the organization of the cortical laminae is highly variable, some repetitive sequences of different laminae are present. Cavities in and between pisoliths contain micrite, detrital grains, calcite bundles and peloids morphologically similar to those found in marine reefs. The pisoliths grow in shallow ephemeral pools fed by hot springs. Radial bundles of calcite precipitate rapidly by degassing and photosynthetic removal of CO2 following spring snowmelt. Conditions for micrite precipitation are unclear, but there is evidence to suggest formation in partially stagnant waters, some of elevated salinity. Amorphous silica laminae precipitate mainly by evaporative concentration; quartz may precipitate from warm silica-rich spring waters that remain below amorphous silica saturation. The evaporite minerals form during desiccation of the pools or from spray. The peloids in cavities are probably primary precipitates. Different types of laminae may form simultaneously in different pools because of the highly variable conditions across the playa. Lateral migration of spring locations through time has created a complex carbonate-silica pavement. Large spherical pisoliths form in outflow channels near spring orifices and across discharge aprons where waters are several decimetres deep. With mineral precipitation, channels are filled and become shallow, producing discoid pisoliths and crusts. In shallow waters and on distal aprons only small pisolith gravels form. As spring pools fill with deposits, their locations shift laterally; new pisoliths form elsewhere or precipitation may recommence on older abandoned pisoliths.  相似文献

Reliable quantification of suspended sediment (SS) and particulate phosphorus (PP) transport, and identification of the various delivery pathways at the catchment level, is an important and necessary aid to appropriate catchment management. In this study we measured storm event, seasonal and annual losses of SS and PP from a Danish arable catchment, Gelbæk Stream, using a multisampling strategy. SS losses for the study years May 1993–April 1994 and May 1994–April 1995 ranged from 71 to 88 kg ha−1, while PP losses ranged from 0·32 to 0·36 kg P ha−1. In both cases losses mainly occurred during infrequent storm events. In comparison with intensive storm sampling, infrequent (fortnightly) sampling underestimated annual transport during the two study years by −24 and −331%, respectively, for SS, and by −8·6 and −151%, respectively, for PP. Reliable estimation of the transport of sediment and sediment-associated nutrients and other substances thus necessitates the use of an intensive monitoring approach. Turbidimeters proved to be a good substitute for direct measurement of SS, especially during storm events, although careful calibration is needed at the seasonal and storm event levels. Experience shows that in artificially drained and geologically complex catchments such as Gelbæk, simultaneous comparative monitoring of different sources (e.g. subsurface drainage water) is an important means of reliably discriminating between the various diffuse sources of sediment and phosphorus. Subsurface drainage water was found to account for 11–15% of the annual SS export from the catchment; the corresponding figure for PP being 11–18%. Surface runoff was only a source of SS and PP during the first study year, when it accounted for 19% of SS and 7% of PP catchment export. Stream bank/bed erosion must therefore have been the major diffuse source of SS and PP in both study years. The study also revealed that analysis of the trace element content (e.g. 137Cs, 210Pb) of the SS transported in subsurface drainage water and stream water during storm events is a useful means of discriminating between diffuse losses of SS delivered from topsoil and subsoil compartments. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new pollen record from an upland lake in north-west Spain, Laguna de la Roya, spans the last ca 14,500 yrs and includes clear evidence of a Weichselian Lateglacial event correlative with the Younger Dryas. Pollen-climate response surfaces have been used to make quantitative reconstructions of palaeoclimate conditions at this and two other sites in the region. These reconstructions indicate that the climate was dry and cool during both the Late Weichselian and the Younger Dryas; in contrast, conditions during the Lateglacial Interstadial were relatively moist. During the early Holocene the climate was more continental in character than it has been for the last three millenia. Human activity has had a substantial impact upon the upland vegetation around Laguna de la Roya only during the last two millennia.  相似文献

The paper is based on autobiographical details of residential mobility for a small sample of New Zealand male career professionals collected in 1981. Classified by cohort and employment sector, the information is used to examine migration in the context of personal career development. Aspects explored include age of entry to the workforce, frequency of movement, migration and career promotion, and the spatial structure of migration. Also discussed, in conclusion, is the impact on career-related migration of the surge of national economic restructuring initiated in 1984.  相似文献
