By using small scale model tests, the interference effect on the vertical load-deformation behavior of a number of equally
spaced strip footings, placed on the surface of dry sand, was investigated. At any stage, all the footings were assumed to
(i) carry exactly equal magnitude of load, and (ii) settle to the same extent. No tilt of the footing was permitted. The effect
of clear spacing (s) among footings on the results was explored. A new experimental setup was proposed in which only one footing
needs to be employed rather than a number of footings. The bearing capacity increases continuously with decrease in spacing
among the footings. The interference effect becomes further prominent with increase in soil friction angle. In contrast to
an increase in the bearing capacity, with decrease in spacing of footings, an increase in the footing settlement associated
with the ultimate state of shear failure was observed. The present experimental observations were similar to those predicted
by the available theory, based on the method of characteristics. As compared to the theory, the present experimental data,
however, indicates much greater effect of interference especially for larger spacing among footings. 相似文献

Heavy mineral analysis was carried out for the beach and fore dune sediments along 60 transects of Nizampatnam-Lankavanidibba
coastal area. The heavy mineral assemblage in this area with decreasing abundance of opaques (Ilmenite + magnetite, 47.67%),
pyriboles (20.35%), garnets (3.66%), epidote (3.23%) and with less than 3.0% concentration of sillimanite, zircon, staurolite,
kyanite, apatite, spinel, monazite, biotite, topaz, leucoxene and chlorite. The heavy mineral concentrations are high in the
finer fractions i.e., +120 and +230 (ASTM) than the coarse fraction (+60) of sand. In the seven sectors, heavy mineral assemblage
is same but their concentrations are different. The sectors nearer to the river mouth contain high concentration of high specific
gravity heavy minerals (ilmenite and magnetite) than sectors away from the river mouth. The redistribution of heavy minerals
is controlled by creek dynamics, longshore currents, size and specific gravity of the heavy minerals. 相似文献

The data such as the H-spectrum-spectroheliographic (SSHG) observations, the H-chromospheric observations, etc., of a flare loop prominence which occurred on the western solar limb on 1981 April 27 have been obtained at Yunnan Observatory. The distribution of the internal motions and the macroscopical motion of the flare loop prominence with time and space in the course of its eruption and ascension is derived from the comprehensive analysis of the data. Critical rainfall thresholds for landslides are powerful tools for preventing landslide hazard. The thresholds are commonly estimated empirically starting from rainfall events that triggered landslides in the past. The creation of the appropriate rainfall–landslide database is one of the main efforts in this approach. In fact, an accurate agreement between the landslide and rainfall information, in terms of location and timing, is essential in order to correctly estimate the rainfall–landslide relationships. A further issue is taking into account the average moisture conditions prior the triggering event, which reasonably may be crucial in determining the sufficient amount of precipitation. In this context, the aim of this paper is exploiting historical landslide and rainfall data in a spatial database for the derivation of critical rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrence in Sicily, southern Italy. The hourly rainfall events that caused landslides occurred in the twentieth century were specifically identified and reconstructed. A procedure was proposed to automatically convert rain guages charts recorded on paper tape into digital format and then to provide the cumulative rainfall hyetograph in digital format. This procedure is based on a segmentation followed by signal recognition techniques which allow to digitalize and to recognize the hyetograph automatically. The role of rainfall prior to the landslide events was taken into account by including in the analysis the rainfall occurred 5, 15 and 30 days before each landslide. Finally, cumulated rainfall duration thresholds for different exceedance probability levels were determined. The obtained thresholds resulted in agreement with the regional curves proposed by other authors for the same area; antecedent rainfall turned out to be particularly important in triggering landslides. 相似文献

Beach-cast wrack of marine origin is considered a spatial subsidy to the marine-terrestrial transition zone. We found that
the wrack line on sand and gravel beaches of Vancouver Island was frequented by intertidal purple shore crabs,Hemigrapsus nudus (Dana 1851) and densely colonized by detritivorous talitrid amphipods. Amphipods spend the day buried in sand and forage
on beach wrack during the night.H. nudus were found in supratidal wrack putches immediately after nightly high tides in field censuses, but spent most of the day
and ebb tides either submerged subtidally or hidden underneath intertidal rocks and boulders. In feeding trials, intertidal
shore crabs were capable of preying on talitrid amphipods. We considerH. nudus an omnivore feeding on both fresh and decaying macroalgae as well as animal prey. Although living supratidally, amphipods
were significantly preferred over intertidal littorine snails by foraging shore crabs. Handling time of amphipods was significantly
shorter than for littorine snails. While amphipods had a reduced risk of predation byH. nudus when buried in the sand, foraging undern eath wrack patches did not reduce predation pressure on amphipods by shore crabs.
Rates of amphipod consumption by shore crabs were higher at darkness than daylight. In addition to an apparent day-night rhythm,
tidal height and time elapsed since previous high tide had a significant influence on shore crab density wrack. We conclude
that beach-cast wrack acts as a spatial subsidy by virtue of providing a valuable food source to talitrid amphipods, which
are in turn consumed by shore crabs that ride the nightly high tide into supratidal wrack patches to reduce the risk of passing
bare sand on theiry way to a feeding habitat rich in valuable prey. 相似文献

The long-period tides are a tool for understanding oceanic motions at low frequencies and large scales. Here we review observations and theory of the fortnightly, monthly and pole tide constitutents. Observations have been plagued by low signal-to-noise ratios and theory by the complex lateral geometry and great sensitivity to bottom slopes. A new spectral element model is used to compute the oceanic response to tidal forcing at 2-week and monthly periods. The general response is that of a heavily damped (Q ≈ 5) system with both the energy input from the moon and the dissipation strongly localized in space. The high dissipation result is probably generally applicable to all low frequency barotropic oceanic motions. Over much of the ocean, the response has both the character of a large-scale and a superposed Rossby wave-like character, thus vindicating two apparently conflicting earlier interpretations. To the extent that free waves are excited they are consistent with their being dominated by Rossby and topographic Rossby wave components, although gravity modes are also necessarily excited to some degree. In general, a modal representation is not very helpful. The most active regions are the Southern Ocean and the western and northern North Atlantic. These results are stable to changes in geometry, topography, and tide period. On a global average basis, the dynamical response of Mm is closer to equilibrium than is Mf. 相似文献

In recent years, many coal-producing countries have paid great attention to the land subsidence causedby coal cutting. In China, because of the dense population in coalfield areas, the land subsidence hazard is more seri-ous. After a brief analysis on the mechanism of land subsidence, this paper gives a comprehensive and systematical ac-count on all kinds of hazards caused by the land subsidence in China. The study shows that land subsidence has endan-gered land, buildings, traffic and communication lines, dykes and dams. It also causes damage to ecological and socialenvironment. In order to lessen the hazard of land subsidence, preventive measures should be taken to reduce the col-lapse amount, such as extraction with stowing, banded mining system, succession and coordination mining system, orhigh-pressure mudflow between rock strata. Measures of reinforcing or moving certain buildings should also be taken toreduce the destructive degree. In order to harness the subsidence land and bring them under control for fanning, mea-sures should be taken such as filling with spoil or fine breeze, excavating the deeper and covering the shallower land. 相似文献

Net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) is becoming a commonly used ecological indicator of estuarine ecosystem metabolic rates. Estuarine
ecosystem processes are spatially and temporally variable, but the corresponding variability in NEM has not been properly
assessed. Spatial and temporal variability in NEM was assessed in four western Gulf of Mexico shallow water estuaries. NEM
was calculated from high-frequency dissolved oxygen measurements. Interbay, intrabay, and water column spatial scales were
assessed for NEM, gross primary production (GPP), and respiration (R) rate variability. Seasonal, monthly, and daily temporal
scales in NEM, GPP, and R were also assessed. Environmental conditions were then compared to NEM to determine which factors
were correlated with each temporal and spatial scale. There was significant NEM spatial variability on interbay, intrabay,
and water column spatial scales. Significant spatial variability was ephemeral, so it was difficult to ascertain which environmental
conditions were most influential at each spatial scale. Significant temporal variability in NEM on seasonal, monthly, and
daily scales was found and it was correlated to temperature, salinity, and freshwater inflow, respectively. NEM correlated
strongly with dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity, but the relationships where different in each bay. The dynamics
of NEM on daily scales indicate that freshwater inflow events may be the main driver of NEM in the semiarid estuaries studied.
The variable nature of NEM found here is further evidence that it is not valid to use single station monitoring deployments
for assessment of whole estuarine ecosystem metabolic rates in large ecosystems. The relationship between NEM and temperature,
salinity, and freshwater inflow events could drive predictive models assessing the potential influence of projected climate
change and watershed development scenarios on estuarine metabolic rates. 相似文献

The relation of the maximal daily average values of the relativistic electron fluxes with an energy higher than 2 MeV, obtained
from the measurements on GOES geostationary satellites, during the recovery phase of magnetic storms to the solar wind parameters
and magnetospheric activity indices has been considered. The parameters of Pc5 and Pi1 geomagnetic pulsations and the relativistic
electron fluxes during the prestorm period and the main phase of magnetic storms have been used together with the traditional
indices of geomagnetic activity (A
E, K
p, D
st). A simple model for predicting relativistic electron fluxes has been proposed for the first three days of the magnetic storm
recovery phase. The predicted fluxes of the outer radiation belt relativistic electrons well correlate with the observed values
