We present a detailed thermal and structural analysis of a 2 m class solar telescope mirror which is subjected to a varying heat load at an observatory site. A 3-dimensional heat transfer model of the mirror takes into account the heating caused by a smooth and gradual increase of the solar flux during the day-time observations and cooling resulting from the exponentially decaying ambient temperature at night. The thermal and structural response of two competing materials for optical telescopes, namely Silicon Carbide – best known for excellent heat conductivity and Zerodur – preferred for its extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion, is investigated in detail. The insight gained from these simulations will provide a valuable input for devising an efficient and stable thermal control system for the primary mirror.  相似文献

The birth process and (early) evolution of massive stars is still poorly understood. Massive stars are rare, their birthplaces are hidden from view and their formation timescale is short. So far, our physical knowledge of these young massive stars has been derived from near‐IR imaging and spectroscopy, revealing populations of young OB‐type stars, some still surrounded by a (remnant?) accretion disk, others apparently “normal” main sequence stars powering H II regions. The most important spectral features of OB‐type stars are, however, located in the UV and optical range. With VLT/X‐shooter it is possible to extend the spectral coverage of these young massive stars into the optical range, to better determine their photospheric properties, to study the onset of the stellar wind, and to characterize the physical structure of the circumstellar disk (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The possible contribution of gamma-rays predicted within the universal cosmic-ray (CR) hypothesis to the energy range of CR spectrum above black-body cutoff is calculated. These gamma-rays arise from the relativistic electromagnetic cascade generated in the field of microwave background radiation (MBR). The ultra-high energy photons and electrons that initiate the cascade are produced at the decay of -mesons created in interactions of photons with the MBR. Simple analytic expression for cascade gamma-ray spectrum is obtained from the solution of kinetic equations for electrons and photons as well as for protons propagating in the MBR field. It is shown that at certain values of magnetic field and radio-wave density in the intergalactic space te flux of cascade gamma-rays may at least partly mask the black-body cutoff in the CR spectrum.Deceased, August 13, 1989.  相似文献

Problems where impact broadened radio recombination lines appeared narrower than predicted first showed up ∼40 years ago at frequencies below ∼3 GHz. But it was soon found that the observations could be explained by throwing out the uniform density models and replacing them with variable density ones. However, this problem re-appeared recently when a mysterious line narrowing above quantum numbers of (nn)=(202,8) was reported from sensitive observations of Orion and W51 near 6 GHz. Here it is demonstrated that the narrowing is unlikely to be caused by the data processing technique and therefore must be source related. It is further demonstrated that the observed line narrowing can be tied to one of the fundamental properties of radio recombination lines; namely the fact that the spacing of adjacent n-transitions increases with frequency. The line narrowing is observed to begin when the n-transition density, D n , exceeds ∼11.6 transitions per GHz. This may imply that it is somehow related either to a previously overlooked effect in the impact broadening process, or to some unknown parallel process, that is tied to the separation between adjacent n-transitions. Based on these results it can be concluded, as has also been concluded in several theoretical investigations, that the observed line narrowing is not tied to a fixed range of either n or Δn.  相似文献

Newly acquired, sequentially spaced, high-resolution near-infrared spectra across the central section of crater Copernicus’ interior have been analyzed using a range of complementary techniques and indexes.We have developed a new interpretative method based on a multiple stage normalization process that appears to both confirm and expand on previous mineralogical estimations and mapping. In broad terms, the interpreted distribution of the principle mafic species suggests an overall composition of surface materials dominated by calcium-poor pyroxenes and minor olivine but with notable exceptions: the southern rim displays strong ca-rich pyroxene absorption features and five other locations, the uppermost northern crater wall, opposite rim sections facing the crater floor, and the central peak Pk1 and at the foot of Pk3, show instead strong olivine signatures.We also propose impact glass an alternative interpretation to the source of the weak but widespread olivine-like spectral signature found in low-reflectance samples, since it probably represents a major regolith constituent and component in large craters such as Copernicus.The high quality and performance of the SIR-2 data allows for the detection of diagnostic key mineral species even when investigating spectral samples with very subdued absorption features, confirming the intrinsic high-quality value of the returned data.  相似文献

Comparisons of the northern and southern far ultraviolet (UV) auroral emissions of Jupiter from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) or any other ultraviolet imager have mostly been made so far on a statistical basis or were not obtained with high sensitivity and resolution. Such observations are important to discriminate between different mechanisms responsible for the electron acceleration of the different components of the aurora such as the satellite footprints, the «main oval» or the polar emissions. The field of view of the ACS and STIS cameras on board HST is not wide enough to provide images of the full jovian disk. We thus compare the morphology of the north and south aurora observed 55 min apart and we point out similarities and differences. On one occasion HST pointed successively the two polar regions and auroral images were seen separated by only 3 min. This makes it possible to compare the emission structure and the emitted FUV power of corresponding regions. We find that most morphological features identified in one hemisphere have a conjugate counterpart in the other hemisphere. However, the power associated with conjugate regions of the main oval, diffuse or discrete equatoward emission observed quasi-simultaneously may be different in the two hemispheres. It is not directly nor inversely proportional to the strength of the B-field as one might expect for diffuse precipitation or field-aligned acceleration with equal ionospheric electron density in both hemispheres. Finally, the lack of symmetry of some polar emissions suggests that some of them could be located on open magnetic field lines.  相似文献

The Sun Watcher with Active Pixels and Image Processing (SWAP) is an EUV solar telescope onboard ESA’s Project for Onboard Autonomy 2 (PROBA2) mission launched on 2 November 2009. SWAP has a spectral bandpass centered on 17.4 nm and provides images of the low solar corona over a 54×54 arcmin field-of-view with 3.2 arcsec pixels and an imaging cadence of about two minutes. SWAP is designed to monitor all space-weather-relevant events and features in the low solar corona. Given the limited resources of the PROBA2 microsatellite, the SWAP telescope is designed with various innovative technologies, including an off-axis optical design and a CMOS–APS detector. This article provides reference documentation for users of the SWAP image data.  相似文献

Small-scale magnetic fields can be observed on the Sun in high-resolution G-band filtergrams as magnetic bright points (MBPs). We study Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) longitude and latitude scans of the quiet solar surface taken in the G-band in order to characterise the centre-to-limb dependence of MBP properties (size and intensity). We find that the MBP’s sizes increase and their intensities decrease from the solar centre towards the limb. The size distribution can be fitted using a log–normal function. The natural logarithm of the mean (μ parameter) of this function follows a second-order polynomial and the generalised standard deviation (σ parameter) follows a fourth-order polynomial or equally well (within statistical errors) a sine function. The brightness decrease of the features is smaller than one would expect from the normal solar centre-to-limb variation; that is to say, the ratio of a MBP’s brightness to the mean intensity of the image increases towards the limb. The centre-to-limb variations of the intensities of the MBPs and the quiet-Sun field can be fitted by a second-order polynomial. The detailed physical process that results in an increase of a MBP’s brightness and size from Sun centre to the limb is not yet understood and has to be studied in more detail in the future.  相似文献

In this paper, we have constructed a five dimensional LRS Bianchi type I cosmological model with wet dark fluid (WDF) in general relativity with the matter field described as bulk viscosity. It is found that in presence of bulk viscosity an inflationary effective stiff fluid cosmological model is obtained, whereas in absence of bulk viscosity the wet dark fluid degenerate to stiff fluid. Some physical and geometrical properties of the model are also discussed.  相似文献

A number of small, cyclic molecules containing several carbon atoms in their ring structure has been identified in different astrophysical environments. It is the aim of this work to study important molecular properties of such heterocyclic species bearing an iron atom, which is one of the most abundant cosmic elements. Quantum theoretical calculations based on a density functional approach have been employed to investigate physical properties of six small cyclic carbon and hydrocarbon molecules containing iron as a hetero atom, viz. FeC2H n and FeC3H n (n=0,2,4). The full geometry optimisation at the chosen level of electronic structure theory (B3LYP/6-31G(d)) including vibrational anharmonicities and non-rigidity, has furnished values for the rotational constants of these species to an expected accuracy of about one per cent. We present structural, electronic, vibrational, and rotational molecular properties including line frequencies, line strengths, and transition probabilities. These results may be helpful for identifying these molecules in future laboratory experiments in view of tentative astronomical observations.  相似文献
