We made comparative studies of three tropical ox-bow lakes in India with different trophic states. The species number of zooplanktons
was negatively correlated with the degree of water eutrophication, and lakes of similar trophic status had higher similarity
of species. The most significant differences of species composition were observed with rotifers and zoobenthos. The density
and biomass of phytoplankton, rotifers, oligochaetes and chironomids tended to increase with increasing nutrients. We observed
a significant difference of dominant species in different waters, especially the eutrophic lake, which was dominated by a
few species of oligochaetes. The abundance of Tanypus bilobatus showed a highly significant correlation with the degree of eutrophication. Rotifers and zoobenthos showed considerably lower

The strength and deformability of rock mass primarily depend on the condition of joints and their spacing and partially on
the engineering properties of rock matrix. Till today, numerical analysis of discontinuities e.g. joint, fault, shear plane
and others is conducted placing an interface element in between two adjacent rock matrix elements. However, the applicability
of interface elements is limited in rock mechanics problems having multiple discontinuities due to its inherent numerical
difficulties often leading to non-convergent solution. Recent developments in extended finite element method (XFEM) having
strong discontinuity imbedded within a regular element provide an opportunity to analyze discrete discontinuities in rock
masses without any numerical difficulties. This concept is based on partition of unity principle and can be used for cohesive
rock joints. This paper summarizes the mathematical frameworks for the implementation of strong discontinuities in 3 and 6
nodded triangular elements and also provides numerical examples of the application of XFEM in one and two dimensional problems

The passive Eastern Continental Margin of India (ECMI) evolved during the break up of India and East Antarctica in the Early Cretaceous. The 85°E ridge is a prominent linear aseismic feature extending from the Afanasy Nikitin Seamounts northward to the Mahanadi basin along the ECMI. Earlier workers have interpreted the ridge to be a prominent hot spot trail. In the absence of conclusive data, the extension of the ridge towards its northern extremity below the thick Bengal Fan sediments was a matter of postulation. In the present study, interpretation of high resolution 2-D reflection data from the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, located in the northern part of the ridge, unequivocally indicates continuation of the ridge across the continent–ocean boundary into the slope and shelf tracts of the ECMI. Its morphology and internal architecture suggest a volcanic plume related origin that can be correlated with the activity of the Kerguelen hot spot in the nascent Indian Ocean. In the continental region, the plume related volcanic activity appears to have obliterated all seismic features typical of continental crust. The deeper oceanic crust, over which the hot spot plume erupted, shows the presence of linear NS aligned basement highs, corresponding with the ridge, underlain by a depressed Moho discontinuity. In the deep oceanic basin, the ridge influences the sediment dispersal pattern from the Early Cretaceous (?)/early part of Late Cretaceous times till the end of Oligocene, which is an important aspect for understanding the hydrocarbon potential of the basin. 相似文献

The results of a number of laboratory model tests for the short‐term ultimate uplift capacity of a circular plate anchor embedded in saturated soft kaolinite and montmorillonite are presented. The tests were conducted with and without venting the bottom of the plate anchor in order to determine the variation of the suction force with embedment ratio. Seasonal prediction of Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) has been attempted for the current year 2011 using Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) developed at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). First, 30?years of model climatology starting from 1981 to 2010 has been generated to capture the variability of ISM over the Indian region using 30 seasonal simulations. The simulated model climatology has been validated with different sets of observed climatology, and it was observed that the simulated climatological rainfall is affected by model bias. Subsequently, a bias correction procedure using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 rainfall has been proposed. The bias-corrected rainfall climatology shows both spatial and temporal variability of ISM satisfactorily. Further, four sets of 10-member ensemble simulations of ISM 2009 and 2010 have been performed in hindcast mode using observed sea surface temperature (SST) and persistence of April SST anomaly, and it has been found that the bias-corrected model rainfall captures the seasonal variability of ISM reasonably well with some discrepancies in these two contrasting monsoon years. With this positive background, the seasonal prediction of ISM 2011 has been carried out in forecast mode with the assumption of persistence of May SST anomaly from June through September 2011. The model assessment shows an 11% deficiency in All-India Rainfall (AIR) of ISM 2011. In particular, the monthly accumulated rains are predicted to be 101% (17.6?cm), 86% (24.3?cm), 83% (21.0?cm) and 95% (15.5?cm) of normal AIR for the months of June, July, August and September, respectively. 相似文献

The relationship between trophic position through delta13C and delta15N and trace metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Cu and Hg) was investigated in the tissues of six marine mammal species from the Northeast Atlantic: striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba, common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, Atlantic white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus acutus, harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena, white beaked-dolphin Lagenorhynchus albirostris, grey seal Halichoerus grypus stranded on French Channel and Irish coasts. White-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises, white-sided dolphins, common and striped dolphins display the same relative and decreasing trophic position, as measured by delta15N values, along both the Irish and French channel coasts, reflecting conservative trophic habits between these two places. Hepatic and renal Cd concentrations were significantly correlated to muscle delta13C and delta15N values while Hg, Zn and Cu did not. These results suggest that Cd accumulation is partly linked to the diet while other factors such as age or body condition might explain Hg, Zn or Cu variability in marine mammals. Combined stable isotope and trace metal analyses appear to be useful tools for the study of marine mammal ecology. 相似文献

Continuous measurements of 3-dimensional winds, spectral parameters, and tropopause height for ~114 h during the passage of a tropical depression using mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere (MST) radar at Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E) are discussed. The spectral analysis of zonal and meridional winds shows the presence of inertia-gravity wave (IGW) with the dominant periodicity of 56 h and intrinsic period of 27 h in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The strengthening of easterly jet and associated wind shears during the passage of the depression is one of the causative mechanisms for exciting the IGW. A well-established radar method is used to identify the tropopause and to study its response to the propagating atmospheric disturbances. The significance of the present study lies in showing the response of tropopause height to the IGW during tropical depression for the first time, which will have implications in stratosphere–troposphere exchange processes. 相似文献

Our purpose is to examine the formation of different sheaths in rotating astroplasmas embedded in an ambient magnetic field.
Sequel to our recent work (Das and Chakraborty in Astrophys. Space Sci., 2011) we remodeled our present study with the view to finding of robust sheath over the Earth’s Moon along with the formation
of dust clouds therein. Based on using the pseudopotential analysis, a modified Sagdeev potential equation has been derived,
which, in turns, quantifies the interaction of Coriolis force and magnetic field and to derive the different natures of sheath
and dust atmosphere. The application of this result to the input numeric data of the lunar environment and dynamical behaviors
of dust levitation has been studied. Our study finds that the dust particles having a spatial segregation within the sheath

Monoclinic materials viz. quartz, lithium niobate and lithium tantalate are among the most abundant materials, finding numerous applications throughout the technological world. Moreover, the presence of irregularity, initial stresses, anisotropy and heterogeneity in a material medium is obvious. These facts motivate the study of magnetoelastic SH-wave propagation in an irregular monoclinic sandwiched layer between a heterogeneous isotropic layer and an isotropic half space, all under initial stress. The heterogeneity in the uppermost layer is caused due to exponential variation in rigidity, density and initial stress in terms of space variable pointing vertically downward. The dispersion relation has been obtained using first-order perturbation technique. The substantial effect of wave number, anisotropy, irregularity, width ratio of the layers, horizontal compressive/tensile initial stresses, heterogeneity and monoclinic-magnetoelastic coupling parameter associated with sandwiched layer on phase velocity of SH-wave has been studied and depicted by means of graph. Comparative study made for the case when pre-stressed irregular sandwiched layer is monoclinic-magnetoelastic to the case when it is isotropic magnetoelastic layer is one of the major highlights of the current study. 相似文献
