We invert ISC PcP and PKP absolute and differential traveltimes in an attempt to infer the long-wavelength topography of the core-mantle boundary (CMB). The data selection and processing methods are described and evaluated. These travel-time data are very noisy and the geographic distribution of the data is highly non-uniform, inhibiting reliable inference of CMB topography. Spatial averaging enhances the coherent component of the residual variance (related to heterogeneity), however, the random component of the variance is much larger than the coherent component. We show that for PcP data the coherent signal due to mantle heterogeneity overshadows that arising from the CMB, and that the effects of mantle heterogeneity are mapped into our inferred CMB solutions. The PcP data are not correlated across the spatial averaging bins and seem to have a strong bias due to small-scale structure and/or noise. The non-uniform geographic sampling of the data plays a role in the mapping of mantle heterogeneity onto the CMB. Spatial patterns of CMB models inferred from different phases do not agree. Amplitudes of seismically inferred CMB undulations vary greatly. The sensitivity of inferred CMB models to the processing, spatial averaging procedure, and inversion techniques are investigated. Topographic amplitudes increase strongly with increasing input residual variance. The power spectrum of inferred topography indicates that there are unmodelled heterogeneities that must be described with spherical harmonics of degree 6 and higher. Based on this work, we conclude that reliable inference of long-wavelength CMB topography is not likely with the current ISC data set or with a spherical harmonic expansion truncated to degree and order 6. 相似文献

Studies were conducted in the central Mojave Desert to quantify how creosote bushes (Larrea tridentata) respond to physical damage during large-scale military training exercises. Creosote bush possesses a resilient growth form that recovers from repeated physical damage via resprouts arising from meristems in stem bark below severed or crushed canopy units. At high levels of disturbance by heavy vehicles, nearly all individuals showed measurable breakage, but without additional damage each plant can regain a full canopy within 5 years under arid field conditions. Resprouts exhibited more vigorous growth and doubled the biomass accumulation stimulated by high rainfall of 1998, an El Niño year, vs. a normal year. New shoots of resprouted individuals were markedly different in morphological traits than canopy old growth and had slightly higher predawn shoot water potentials. The natural ability of this evergreen species to recover from cutting and crushing bodes well for re-establishment of creosote bush desert scrub communities following episodes of severe damage by vehicles. 相似文献

Diffusive boundary layers (DBL), sediment oxygen flux, and natural passive flow through model macrofauna burrows were compared
in two benthic chambers: one with a conventional rotational stirrer and the other with a two-dimensional flow diffuser system.
Oxygen microprobe profiles showed that at similar velocities the mean diffusive boundary layer (DBL) thickness induced by
a conventional rotor stirrer (453±118 μm) was not significantly different to that produced by the diffuser system (403±53
μm). The rotor produced twice as much DBL spatial variability (coefficient of variation 27%) as the diffuser (CV 11%). Variability
between the rotor system’s DBL transect replicates was also two times greater (average CV of 22%) compared to the diffuser
(CV 14%). At equivalent stirring speeds over experimental sediments, mean O2 consumption rates were also not significantly different between the two systems. The diffuser induced consistently greater
(16–37%) passive Bernoullian flow through model macrofauna borrows irrespective of the position of inhalant-exhalent openings.
The rotor stimulated anomalous burrow flow regimes over a greater area of the chamber floor (36%) compared to the diffuser
(23%). Depending on vent orientation the rotor was shown to reverse (exhalent to inhalant) burrow flow regimes in the central
9% of the chamber floor. This artifact of radial pressure and velocity differentials may have severe implications for tube
dwelling infauna that rely on unidirectional flow. The diffuser system more closely mimicked natural two-dimensional water
flow over the sediment surface and structures therein and is likely to give more representative results when measuring benthic

Coastal waters are severely threatened by nitrogen (N) loading from direct groundwater discharge. The subterranean estuary,
the mixing zone of fresh groundwater and sea water in a coastal aquifer, has a high potential to remove substantial N. A network
of piezometers was used to characterize the denitrification capacity and groundwater flow paths in the subterranean estuary
below a Rhode Island fringing salt marsh.15N-enriched nitrate was injected into the subterranean estuary (in situ push-pull method) to evaluate the denitrification capacity
of the saturated zone at multiple depths (125–300 cm) below different zones (upland-marsh transition zone, high marsh, and
low marsh). From the upland to low marsh, the water table became shallower, groundwater dissolved oxygen decreased, and groundwater
pH, soil organic carbon, and total root biomass increased. As groundwater approached the high and low marsh, the hydraulic
gradient increased and deep groundwater upwelled. In the warm season (groundwater temperature >12 °C), elevated groundwater
denitrification capacity within each zone was observed. The warm season low marsh groundwater denitrification capacity was
significantly higher than all other zones and depths. In the cool season (groundwater temperature <10.5 °C), elevated groundwater
denitrification capacity was only found in the low marsh. Additions of dissolved organic carbon did not alter groundwater
denitrification capacity suggesting that an alternative electron donor, possibly transported by tidal inundation from the
root zone, may be limiting. Combining flow paths with denitrification capacity and saturated porewater residence time, we
estimated that as much as 29–60 mg N could be removed from 11 of water flowing through the subterranean estuary below the
low marsh, arguing for the significance of subterranean estuaries in annual watershed scale N budgets. 相似文献

The proposed Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) project is described. This multi-institution collaboration aims to produce arcminute-resolution and micro-Kelvin sensitivity maps of the microwave background temperature over 200 square degree of the sky in three frequency bands. We give a brief overview of the scientific motivations for such a map, followed by a design outline of our 6-m custom telescope, an overview of our proposed bolometer array detector technology, and site considerations and scan strategy. Recent observations show the existence of an increasing number of collimated outflows ejected by young, low-mass stars which are embedded in H ii regions. At distances of a few tens of au from the star, at least one lobe of these outflows will be shielded from the ambient ionizing radiation by the compact, high-extinction circumstellar disc. Within these shielded regions, the jets are probably mostly neutral, similar to the jets in 'normal' Herbig–Haro (HH) objects. At larger distances, these jets emerge into the photoionized nebula, and start to be photoionized by the radiation from the ionizing photon source of the nebula.
In this paper, we model the photoionization of an initially neutral HH jet. This process begins as an ionization front at the side of the jet, which is directed towards the ionizing star of the nebula, and progresses into the beam of the jet. There are two possible solutions. In the first solution, the jet beam becomes fully ionized through the passage of an R-type ionization front. In the second solution, the ionization front slows down enough to become a D-type front (or is already a D-type front at the point in which the jet emerges into the photoionized nebula), forming a partially ionized jet beam, with an expanding photoionized region and a compressed neutral region.
We explore these two types of solutions both analytically and numerically, and discuss the observational effects introduced by this jet photoionization process, concentrating in a region of parameter space that straddles the parameters deduced for HH 444 (the jet from V 510 Orionis). 相似文献

The simplest, conventional, and original form of the circular restricted problem of three bodies is briefly described in sidereal and synodic systems using dimensional and non-dimensional variables. This dynamical system is generalized to n2 primary bodies (from n=2) with masses Mi, 1in, interacting with arbitrary force laws (instead of only gravitational forces). The number of bodies of small mass mMi not perturbing the primaries is increased from =1 to 1 where 1 and the minor bodies are allowed to interact with one another under arbitrary force laws. While the minor bodies (m) do not affect the motions of the primaries (Mi), the primaries influence the motions of the minor bodies with arbitrary force laws.For the case where n=2, 1, and only gravitational forces act on the system, an integral of the system is derived. It is shown that the energy integral of the general problem of N bodies and the Jacobian integral of the classical restricted problem of three bodies are limiting cases of this integral. The role of the integral in bounding the motion of the minor bodies is discussed. Several applications of this system are given. 相似文献
