A collision between the ships MSC Chitra and MV Khalijia 3 in the mouth region of Mumbai Harbour led to a leakage of around 800 t of fuel oil in August 2010, affecting the rocky intertidal region of Colaba. To evaluate the impact of this catastrophic event on the resident biota, a 15-month-long sampling programme was initiated in the oil-affected area immediately after the spill. Petroleum hydrocarbons in water and sediment organic carbon values were high just after the oil spill but subsequently decreased in the following months. In total, 70 macrobenthic taxa were identified. Univariate diversity indices indicated that while the ecological status of the site, albeit briefly, was affected during August 2010, a healthy environment prevailed subsequently. Cluster and multi-dimensional scale (MDS) analyses distinctly segregated the oil impacted monsoon months from the other sampling months. BIOENV analyses indicated that petroleum hydrocarbons and organic carbon were the anthropogenic parameters influencing macrobenthic community structure. Benthic Opportunistic Polychaetes Amphipods (BOPA) index was used to evaluate the ecological quality of the study area as the index is sensitive to oil pollution. Low BOPA values throughout the study period indicated that the environment was good with few opportunistic species. Comparison with past data revealed that the oil spill did not have long-term deleterious effects on the macrobenthic species diversity of this rocky beach, and reasons thereof are discussed. 相似文献

Springs are the only available source of water for domestic and agricultural use in mountainous regions of Dhouli Rao and Kandela in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. These springs are mainly gravity, contact or fracture and solution tubular (Karst) type. Drying of springs during summer causes much hardship to the inhabitants of this region. Hence, environmental isotopes (2H, 18O, 3H) were employed along with hydrogeochemistry and geomorphology to identify the recharge zones of the drying springs. From the stable isotope data of rainwater, the altitude effect was estimated (?0.3?‰ for δ18O per 100 m elevation) and used to determine the recharge zones of the drying springs (+1,000 to +1,430 m amsl). The geo-morphological setting of the valley indicated that either check dam, contour bunding or levees structures with gabion method of rainwater conservation can be implemented to augment the recharge of the springs. 相似文献

We present multiwavelength observations of a large-amplitude oscillation of a polar-crown filament on 15 October 2002, which
has been reported by Isobe and Tripathi (Astron. Astrophys.
449, L17, 2006). The oscillation occurred during the slow rise (≈1 km s−1) of the filament. It completed three cycles before sudden acceleration and eruption. The oscillation and following eruption
were clearly seen in observations recorded by the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The oscillation was seen only in a part of the filament, and it appears to be a standing oscillation rather than
a propagating wave. The amplitudes of velocity and spatial displacement of the oscillation in the plane of the sky were about
5 km s−1 and 15 000 km, respectively. The period of oscillation was about two hours and did not change significantly during the oscillation.
The oscillation was also observed in Hα by the Flare Monitoring Telescope at the Hida Observatory. We determine the three-dimensional
motion of the oscillation from the Hα wing images. The maximum line-of-sight velocity was estimated to be a few tens of kilometers
per second, although the uncertainty is large owing to the lack of line-profile information. Furthermore, we also identified
the spatial displacement of the oscillation in 17-GHz microwave images from Nobeyama Radio Heliograph (NoRH). The filament
oscillation seems to be triggered by magnetic reconnection between a filament barb and nearby emerging magnetic flux as was
evident from the MDI magnetogram observations. No flare was observed to be associated with the onset of the oscillation. We
also discuss possible implications of the oscillation as a diagnostic tool for the eruption mechanisms. We suggest that in
the early phase of eruption a part of the filament lost its equilibrium first, while the remaining part was still in an equilibrium

Extensive Cenozoic lignite-bearing sediments in the western part of Kutch, western India provide a unique opportunity to study the floral diversity at a crucial time of early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO). Rock samples representing a lignite-bearing sequence from the open cast mine at Matanomadh, Gujarat, western India were collected to study the palynofloral composition and to interpret the palaeoclimate and environment of deposition. The sequence mainly composed of lignites, shales and calcareous mudstones yielded rich assemblage consists of pteridophytic spores (7 genera, 10 species), angiosperm pollens (20 genera, 26 species), fungal remains (14 genera, 16 species) and dinoflagellate cysts. The palynofloral assemblage is marked with dominance of angiospermic pollen, particularly those having affinity with the family Arecaceae. Occurrence of fungal remains in high abundance is also noticed. Based on palynomorph contents, the studied sequence is divisible into two palynozones. It is inferred that lower part of the sequences was deposited in a near-shore environment with intermittent marine incursions whereas the depositional regime of upper part was shallow marine. The climate is found to be tropical-subtropical, humid with heavy precipitation during the deposition of Matanomadh lignite-bearing sequence. 相似文献

A total of 240 water-borne bacteria including 72 Escherichia coli, 83 Enterobacter, 30 Klebsiella, 36 Salmonella and 19 Shigella spp. isolates from drinking and recreational water sources were assessed for antibiotic resistance and genetic diversity. Escherichia coli (88.89 %) and species of Enterobacter (86.75 %), Klebsiella (83.33 %) and Salmonella (100 %) were resistant to cefadroxil, while >94 % Shigella spp. were resistant to cefaclor and cefuroxime. Ofloxacin was the most effective antibiotic against isolates of all the genera. Multiple antibiotic resistance index identified dug well, pond and piped water supplies as high risk sources of enteric pathogens. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis and restriction fragment length polymorphism of amplified 16S rRNA gene were studied for genetic relatedness of Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Primer P1254 identified 10, 16, 4, 4 and 1 distinct random amplified polymorphic DNA group(s) of E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella species, respectively. Unlike random amplified polymorphic DNA, restriction fragment length polymorphism using AluI and HaeIII could not segregate isolates in different genetic profiles. 16S rRNA gene of three Enterobacter spp. strains from different sources with similar restriction fragment length polymorphism but different random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns was sequenced, and identified as Enterobacter hormaechei strains skg0061, 0062 and 0063. The sequence information has been submitted to GenBank (HQ322393-95). Biochemically similar but genetically diverse Enterobacteriaceae members from drinking and recreational water sources exhibited varying antibiotic sensitivity. Contamination of water sources with such multiple antibiotic-resistant enteric pathogens poses threat to human health. 相似文献

Pitch-angle diffusion coefficients of electrons have been calculated for resonant interaction with electrostatic electron-cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves using quasi linear diffusion theory. Calculations have been performed for the planets Earth and Jupiter at three radial distances for each planet. Electron precipitation fluxes have also been calculated and compared with observed fluxes. At Earth, electrons of energy ≤200 eV may be put on strong diffusion at L = 10. At lower L values, observed ECH wave amplitudes are insufficient to put electrons on strong diffusion. At Jupiter, electrons can be put on strong diffusion at all L values. However, the energy of electrons which may be put on strong diffusion decreases from about 1 keV at L = 7 to ~100 eV at L = 17. It is concluded that ECH waves may be partly responsible for diffuse auroral precipitation of low energy electrons at Jupiter for lower L values. At Earth contribution of ECH waves to diffuse aurora is quite small. 相似文献

In this study the predictability of northeast monsoon (Oct–Nov–Dec) rainfall over peninsular India by eight general circulation model (GCM) outputs was analyzed. These GCM outputs (forecasts for the whole season issued in September) were compared with high-resolution observed gridded rainfall data obtained from the India Meteorological Department for the period 1982–2010. Rainfall, interannual variability (IAV), correlation coefficients, and index of agreement were examined for the outputs of eight GCMs and compared with observation. It was found that the models are able to reproduce rainfall and IAV to different extents. The predictive power of GCMs was also judged by determining the signal-to-noise ratio and the external error variance; it was noted that the predictive power of the models was usually very low. To examine dominant modes of interannual variability, empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was also conducted. EOF analysis of the models revealed they were capable of representing the observed precipitation variability to some extent. The teleconnection between the sea surface temperature (SST) and northeast monsoon rainfall was also investigated and results suggest that during OND the SST over the equatorial Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, the central Pacific Ocean (over Nino3 region), and the north and south Atlantic Ocean enhances northeast monsoon rainfall.
