Deformed marine terraces provide excellent measures of Quaternary tectonism along 400 km of the Pacific coast of Baja California between Ensenada and Punta Blanca. The nature and magnitude of deformation are well expressed by the present elevation of the marine limit, of Upper Pliocene or Lower Pleistocene age, which has been upwarped to 345m, 357m, and at least 195m in three separate localities, while occurring at lower levels elsewhere. Multiple terraces are found below this marine limit where appreciable uplift has occurred. Where relative subsidence has prevailed, fewer broader terraces or thick alluvial and eolian deposits occur. Terraces are further dislocated by NW-SE strike-slip faulting and by normal faults that trend NE-SW across the coast. Folding and faulting are less significant on the younger terraces than on the older features, and negligible for the Sangamonian terrace, except close to major faults. Crustal movements revealed by these terraces, and by similar features in southern California, Baja California Sur, and around the Gulf of California, are interpreted in terms of plate tectonics. Over the past 5 million years, the Peninsular Ranges have been carried northwestwards away from mainland Mexico, at an average rate of 6cm/yr, on the dis located limb of a spreading sea floor associated with the East Pacific Rise now found beneath the Gulf of California. The Pacific coast of the Peninsular Ranges comprises several discrete crustal slivers which, on the evidence of the marine terraces, have been warped and dislocated in response to tec tonic forces associated with rafting and subsequent crowding against transverse structures to the north. Uplift rates range as high as 1.0m/1000 yrs locally but are generally less, and are much less than rates found in the Transverse Ranges farther north. As in the latter province, basins typified by net sub sidence during Quaternary time are also found.  相似文献

Comparatively little is known about net aggradation on alluvial fans, despite fan construction wherever sediment-delivery rates from uplands exceed sediment-removal rates from receiving basins. In January 1983, 20 alluvial fans in the forested Cascade foothills, northwest Washington, experienced net aggradation in response to debris torrents and stream floods triggered by intense warm rains falling on antecedent snow. Five trenches were excavated to 5 m depth on the Mills Creek fan to place the 1983 event in temporal perspective. The deposits reflect normal streamflow, hyperconcentrated streamflow and debris torrent (flow) conditions. One trench revealed residues of 7 events since 1720 BP. Net rates of Holocene aggradation, based on sediments overlying late Pleistocene fluvioglacial deposits, average 0.42 m ka-1. Net rates for later Holocene time range from 2.17 m ka-1 since 1720 BP to 2.36 m ka-1 since 430 BP. These recent rates exceed the local value for the entire Holocene and rates for humid temperate fans elsewhere. This suggests that accelerated aggradation may characterize later Holocene times, a view that contrasts with the widespread belief that the later Holocene has been dominated by fan-head incision and net degradation. More comparative data are needed to test this observation. Locally, large debris-producing events in 1917 and 1983 are consistent with later Holocene recurrence intervals and thus appear to be independent of timber harvesting. In this paper, the third and final of a series, we present complete K -band imaging and some complementary I -band imaging of the filtered 6C* sample. We find no systematic differences between the K – z relation of 6C* radio galaxies and those from complete samples, so the near-infrared properties of luminous radio galaxies are not obviously biased by the additional 6C* radio selection criteria (steep spectral index and small angular size). The 6C* K – z data significantly improve delineation of the K – z relation for radio galaxies at high redshift ( z >2) . Accounting for non-stellar contamination, and for correlations between radio luminosity and stellar mass, we find little support for previous claims that the underlying scatter in the stellar luminosity of radio galaxies increases significantly at z >2 . In a particular spatially flat universe with a cosmological constant (ΩM=0.3 and ΩΛ=0.7) , the most luminous radio sources appear to be associated with galaxies with a luminosity distribution with a high mean (≈5  L *), and a low dispersion ( σ ∼0.5 mag) which formed their stars at epochs corresponding to z ≳2.5 . This result is in line with recent submillimetre studies of high-redshift radio galaxies and the inferred ages of extremely red objects from faint radio samples.  相似文献

We have quantitatively assessed the resurfacing sources and styles in eighteen mapped venusian quadrangles, about 30% of the venusian surface. Each quadrangle was split into 0.5° by 0.5° boxes, which were then identified as corona materials, large volcano materials (>100 km diameter), intermediate volcano materials (10-100 km), small edifice materials (<10 km), flow materials from rifts or fractures, plains without an identifiable source, impact crater materials and highly deformed materials, or data gaps. We find that coronae resurface approximately 21%, small edifices 22% and large volcanoes about 6% of the surfaces analyzed. Plains with no identifiable source account for an average of 35% of the surface assessed. Small edifices resurface on a scale of 10-100 s of km2; large edifices resurface areas of 104-105 km2. Coronae have greatly varying amounts of associated volcanism, with some coronae producing negligible flow deposits and others producing deposits of 104-106 km2. The areas identified as plains with no visible source occur on small scales (102 km2) to large scales (> 105 km2). Our results indicate that the majority of plains resurfacing by volcanism can be tied to an identifiable source, that fields of small edifices contribute more to resurfacing than we had anticipated, and that resurfacing styles do not appear to have evolved over the time period represented by the surface geology in the mapped quadrangles. All of the units that we quantified occur throughout the histories of the regions mapped. We favor plains resurfacing to have occurred over at least 100 myr, which implies terrestrially reasonable resurfacing rates.  相似文献

Geospatial information and technologies are widely used in South Africa, initially mostly with proprietary software but today, mature, open source alternatives such as QGIS are available. We wanted to find out if and why South African users accepted QGIS, globally the most widely used free and open source GIS. We adapted the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model to test several hypotheses regarding the acceptance and use of QGIS in South Africa. 205 registered members of the Geo‐Information Society of South Africa completed a structured questionnaire. Results show that habit has the most significant influence on behavioural intention to use QGIS, followed by facilitating conditions, price value and social influence. Performance expectancy, effort expectancy, hedonic motivation and access to source code played no significant role. The findings show that adoption of QGIS in South Africa is not primarily influenced by benefits attributed to open source software, such as cost benefits, customizability, improved reliability, quality and security. The results are useful for developers of any GIS product and for choosing a GIS product for an organization, because they provide insight into the behavioural intentions of users.  相似文献
