In the past two decades, optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in marine environments have been
extensively studied. Many of these studies report CDOM properties for the offshore environment where this complex mixture
of optically active compounds is strongly diluted. Nevertheless, autochthonous and allochthonous sources have been identified
and sinks related to photodegradation and bacterial activity have been demonstrated. The calculation of the spectral slope
of the CDOM absorption curve has been proven to be useful and is often reported. However, a rigorous uncertainty analysis
of the slope calculation is rarely reported. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the uncertainty of CDOM spectral
slope calculated between 270 and 400 nm, using both naturally sampled and artificial solutions. We use these results to study
the ultra-oligotrophic waters of the Mediterranean Sea (central eastern basin), where little is known about CDOM spatial distribution.
We show that dilutions of both artificial and natural samples produce a Gaussian distribution of spectral slopes, indicating
that consistent values may be determined, with a typical uncertainty of ±0.0004 nm−1 when absorption at 300 nm was greater then 0.1 m−1 (0.1 m pathlength). Comparing the distribution of spectral slopes from central eastern basin samples to a Gaussian distribution,
we show differences between measurements that were significantly different. These values allow us to distinguish possible
sources (algal derived CDOM), sinks (e.g. photo-bleaching) at different depths. We propose a subdivision of CDOM compounds
into refractory and semilabile/refractory pools and evaluate the CDOM spectral slope of algal derived CDOM released at or

The design of a pump and treat (P&T) system for the hydraulic control of a contaminated plume in a confined aquifer is presented here. Being the system designed for the emergency containment of a nonaqueous phase liquid plume, the evaluation of the system’s short-term efficiency was considered an important issue. For this reason, both time-related and ultimate capture zones were defined. They were traced using the automatic protection area (APA) model, a capture-zone delineation tool based on a hybrid forward-backward particle tracking algorithm, that provides an automatic post-processing encirclement of capture zones. Two simple indexes are here proposed for the evaluation of the performance of the hydraulic barrier, that is, the efficacy and efficiency indexes, calculated from the capture areas provided by APA. The discharge rates of the wells were dimensioned applying the APA algorithm, maximizing efficacy and efficiency of the barrier. Results proved both visually (via plotting of capture zones) and numerically (via calculation of the indexes) that the P&T system can provide a complete capture of the contaminated area and minimizes the volume of extracted water. Consequently, the APA algorithm was proved to be a useful tool in capture zone delineation. As a future perspective, it could be coupled with the real-time measurement of pumping rates and water levels and be implemented as a part of a tuning tool for the management of the hydraulic barrier. 相似文献

The swath bathymetric data acquired during the “Sumatra Aftershocks” cruise from the Sunda trench in the Indian Ocean to the
north of the Sumatra Island imaged several scars and deposits. In situ pore pressure measurements using the Ifremer piezometer
and coring demonstrate that high excess pore pressure and sediment deformation was generated by a recent event in the scar
of the slope failure zone identified by J.T. Henstock and co-authors. This excess pore pressure is localized in the upper
sedimentary layers and is not related to an interplate subduction process. Numerical simulations of the hydrological system
that take into account the hydro-mechanical properties of the upper sediment layer show that the excess pore pressure and
sediment deformations could be generated at the time of the December 26, 2004 Great Sumatra Earthquake.

We present the first winter (December to March) rainfall reconstruction based in a novel proxy, the thickness of annual calcite laminations preserved in Lake La Cruz (central–eastern Spain). A previous calibration analysis between laminae thickness and the instrumental data series (1950 to present) indicated a highly significant correlation with winter rainfall. Therefore this study attempts the winter rainfall reconstruction since the onset of laminations (1579 a.d.) by means of the calibration function previously developed. The verification analysis between inferred annual values and earlier instrumental data (1859–1949) confirms the suitability of this novel proxy and the reliability of the series reconstructed. The reconstructed series show the fluctuating character of winter rainfall in the western Mediterranean area; interdecadal dry periods alternated with wetter periods following, in a board sense, the pattern recorded by documentary sources in other regions of the Iberian Peninsula. At present times regional winter rainfall anomalies are highly correlated with the phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). However the time series analysis showed the dominance of nonstationary components at high frequencies of the climate signal over the last four centuries suggesting that the connection between winter rainfall and the NAO has not been stable over time and also other modes of variability, not only NAO, may have conditioned winter rainfall variability. 相似文献

The aims of this research are: (i) to check availability of weather observations from automated stations in Spain, (ii) to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the networks identified, (iii) to analyze availability of the observations gathered for 3 different networks [two government (GOV): AEMET with national coverage and CASTILLA Y LEÓN on a regional level; and METEOCLIMATIC, a network of volunteer weather observation (VWO) stations on a national level], and (iv) to undertake a spatial redundancy and lacunarity analysis of them. The results reveal: the existence of heterogeneous VWO networks complementing the GOV, differences within and among networks as far as data acquisition frequency, varying delays in their publication, and semantic differences in the observations made. An inventory was made of 24 networks (16 GOV and 8 VWO) with 3,908 stations deployed in Spain. An analysis of observations from 3 networks reveals that 88 % of the stations in the volunteer network record more than two observations per hour. 56 % of the AEMET stations report more than 48 observations every day, 31 % report between 25 and 48 observations a day. Conversely, the CASTILLA Y LEÓN network records data every half hour. The redundancy analysis reveals a 3,429-drop in the number of unduplicated stations. Following the lacunarity analysis of spatial distribution, it is possible to conclude that 60.72 % of the cells do not contain any stations. 相似文献

for environmental sciences. The density, distribution and hazard functions, moments and properties of this new model are presented.
A graphical analysis of the density is also provided. Furthermore, we estimate parameters, propose asymptotic inference and
discuss influence diagnostics by using likelihood methods for the new distribution. An illustrative example with real data

We present new high-pressure temperature experiments on melting phase relations of Fe-C-S systems with applications to metallic core formation in planetary interiors. Experiments were performed on Fe-5 wt% C-5 wt% S and Fe-5 wt% C-15 wt% S at 2-6 GPa and 1050-2000 °C in MgO capsules and on Fe-13 wt% S, Fe-5 wt% S, and Fe-1.4 wt% S at 2 GPa and 1600 °C in graphite capsules. Our experiments show that: (a) At a given P-T, the solubility of carbon in iron-rich metallic melt decreases modestly with increasing sulfur content and at sufficiently high concentration, the interaction between carbon and sulfur can cause formation of two immiscible melts, one rich in Fe-carbide and the other rich in Fe-sulfide. (b) The mutual solubility of carbon and sulfur increases with increasing pressure and no super-liquidus immiscibility in Fe-rich compositions is likely expected at pressures greater than 5-6 GPa even for bulk compositions that are volatile-rich. (c) The liquidus temperature in the Fe-C-S ternary is significantly different compared to the binary liquidus in the Fe-C and Fe-S systems. At 6 GPa, the liquidus of Fe-5 wt% C-5 wt% S is 150-200 °C lower than the Fe-5 wt% S. (d) For Fe-C-S bulk compositions with modest concentration of carbon, the sole liquidus phase is iron carbide, Fe3C at 2 GPa and Fe7C3 at 6 GPa and metallic iron crystallizes only with further cooling as sulfur is concentrated in the late crystallizing liquid. Our results suggest that for carbon and sulfur-rich core compositions, immiscibility induced core stratification can be expected for planets with core pressure less than ∼6 GPa. Thus planetary bodies in the outer solar system such as Ganymede, Europa, and Io with present day core-mantle boundary (CMB) pressures of ∼8, ∼5, and 7 GPa, respectively, if sufficiently volatile-rich, may either have a stratified core or may have experienced core stratification owing to liquid immiscibility at some stage of their accretion. A similar argument can be made for terrestrial planetary bodies such as Mercury and Earth’s Moon, but no such stratification is predicted for cores of terrestrial planets such as Earth, Venus, and Mars with the present day core pressure in the order ?136 GPa, ?100 GPa, and ?23 GPa. (e) Owing to different expected densities of Fe-rich (and carbon-bearing) and sulfur-rich metallic melts, their settling velocities are likely different; thus core formation in terrestrial planets may involve rain of more than one metallic melt through silicate magma ocean. (f) For small planetary bodies that have core pressures <6 GPa and have a molten core or outer core, settling of denser carbide-rich liquid or flotation of lighter, sulfide-rich melt may contribute to an early, short-lived geodynamo. 相似文献

Since the birth of X-ray astronomy, spectral, spatial and timing observation improved dramatically, procuring a wealth of information on the majority of the classes of the celestial sources. Polarimetry, instead, remained basically unprobed. X-ray polarimetry promises to provide additional information procuring two new observable quantities, the degree and the angle of polarization. Polarization from celestial X-ray sources may derive from emission mechanisms themselves such as cyclotron, synchrotron and non-thermal bremsstrahlung, from scattering in aspheric accreting plasmas, such as disks, blobs and columns and from the presence of extreme magnetic field by means of vacuum polarization and birefringence. Matter in strong gravity fields and Quantum Gravity effects can be studied by X-ray polarimetry, too. POLARIX is a mission dedicated to X-ray polarimetry. It exploits the polarimetric response of a Gas Pixel Detector, combined with position sensitivity, that, at the focus of a telescope, results in a huge increase of sensitivity. The heart of the detector is an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip with 105,600 pixels each one containing a full complete electronic chain to image the track produced by the photoelectron. Three Gas Pixel Detectors are coupled with three X-ray optics which are the heritage of JET-X mission. A filter wheel hosting calibration sources unpolarized and polarized is dedicated to each detector for periodic on-ground and in-flight calibration. POLARIX will measure time resolved X-ray polarization with an angular resolution of about 20 arcsec in a field of view of 15 × 15 arcmin and with an energy resolution of 20% at 6 keV. The Minimum Detectable Polarization is 12% for a source having a flux of 1 mCrab and 105 s of observing time. The satellite will be placed in an equatorial orbit of 505 km of altitude by a Vega launcher. The telemetry down-link station will be Malindi. The pointing of POLARIX satellite will be gyroless and it will perform a double pointing during the earth occultation of one source, so maximizing the scientific return. POLARIX data are for 75% open to the community while 25% + SVP (Science Verification Phase, 1 month of operation) is dedicated to a core program activity open to the contribution of associated scientists. The planned duration of the mission is one year plus three months of commissioning and SVP, suitable to perform most of the basic science within the reach of this instrument. A nice to have idea is to use the same existing mandrels to build two additional telescopes of iridium with carbon coating plus two more detectors.
