Summary. Synthetic great circle Rayleigh wave phase velocities are generated from a 3-D upper mantle model for two great circle distributions: a uniform random distribution and an experimental distribution arising from a real set of sources and receivers. Given a tectonic regionalization, the retrieval of the pure path velocities from these great circle data sets leads to a strongly biased solution when the uniform distribution is used, whereas the results from the experimental distribution are closer to the true values. An analysis of the data importances and the information distribution in the data indicates that the great circles introduce coupling between tectonic regions; thus the degeneracy of the solution inherent in great circle data cannot be completely overcome by introducing a tectonic regionalization. It is shown that a satisfactory solution is obtained by selecting data as pure as possible, i.e. data that over-sample one tectonic region without oversampling the others. This condition is better fulfilled by the experimental distribution than by the uniform distribution.  相似文献

Abstract

We propose that international climate change policy would be strengthened by the development and adoption of targets for atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases 25–50 years in the future in addition to near- and long-term targets. ‘Interim concentration targets’, which could be accommodated under the current Convention/Protocol framework, would provide several advantages over the current focus on either the short term (e.g. Kyoto Protocol) or the long term (e.g. ultimate stabilization targets). Interim targets would help constrain rates of climate change (which are not sufficiently addressed by short- or long-term targets, even when paired together). They would also provide a means for keeping open the option of achieving a range of long-term goals while uncertainty (and political disagreement) over the appropriate goal is resolved. We substantiate a number of rationales for such an approach, discuss the use of interim targets in other contexts, and illustrate how such targets for climate change policy might be set.  相似文献

In order to properly assess the climate impact of temporary carbon sequestration and storage projects through land-use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), it is important to consider their temporal aspect. Dynamic life cycle assessment (dynamic LCA) was developed to account for time while assessing the potential impact of life cycle greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. In this paper, the dynamic LCA approach is applied to a temporary carbon sequestration project through afforestation, and the results are compared with those of the two principal ton-year approaches: the Moura-Costa and the Lashof methods. The dynamic LCA covers different scenarios, which are distinguished by the assumptions regarding what happens at the end of the sequestration period. In order to ascertain the degree of compensation of an emission through a LULUCF project, the ratio of the cumulative impact of the project to the cumulative impact of a baseline GHG emission is calculated over time. This ratio tends to 1 when assuming that, after the end of the sequestration project period, the forest is maintained indefinitely. Conversely, the ratio tends to much lower values in scenarios where part of the carbon is released back to the atmosphere due to e.g. fire or forest exploitation. The comparison of dynamic LCA with the ton-year approaches shows that it is a more flexible approach as it allows the consideration of every life cycle stage of the project and it gives decision makers the opportunity to test the sensitivity of the results to the choice of different time horizons.  相似文献

Rb-Sr whole rock data for gneisses and granites from the oriental Pyrénées yield cadomian ages for the basement gneisses and hercynian ages for the granites. Granites occur in two generations. An alkaline granite dated at 335±15 m.y. is syn.—or slightly post-tectonic, and a later calcalkaline granite dated at 275±12 m.y, is clearly intrusive and marks the end of hercynian tectono-metamorphism. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the granites put limits on the proportion of juvenile contribution from the mantle to their formation. Petrogenetic models are tested using Rb and Sr as tracers.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on Am(III), Pu(IV), Np(V), and U(VI) sorption was investigated with natural water (pH ∼8) and zeolitized tuff samples collected from the Rainier Mesa tunnel system, Nevada Test Site, where the USA detonated underground nuclear tests prior to 1992. Perched vadose zone water at Rainier Mesa has high levels of DOM as a result of microbial degradation of mining debris (diesel, wood, etc.). The Am and Pu sorption Kds were up to two orders of magnitude lower in water with high DOM (15-19 mg C/L) compared to the same water with DOM removed (<0.4 mg C/L) or in naturally low DOM (0.2 mg C/L) groundwater. In contrast, Kds of Np and U were less affected by DOM at these solution conditions. Uranium sorption decreased as a result of high dissolved inorganic C (DIC) resulting from microbial degradation of DOM. Thermodynamic model predictions, based on actinide-humic acid stability constants available in the literature, are in general agreement with measured Kd data, correctly predicting the effects of DIC and DOM on actinide retardation. This agreement is encouraging to future modeling efforts and suggests that effects of DOM and DIC can be incorporated into reactive transport modeling predictions. The Am and Pu transport rates in Rainier Mesa tunnel waters will be substantially faster as a result of the elevated DOM levels. Low diffusion rates of actinide-DOM macromolecular complexes may focus Pu and Am transport into fractures and minimize retardation via matrix diffusion. The resulting transport behavior will affect actinide distribution patterns and associated risk estimates.  相似文献

Models of population synthesis for the Galaxy have been developed in order to understand galactic structure and evolution. They allow to test scenarii of evolution by comparisons between model predictions and observed distributions. Forthcoming near-infrared surveys will enormously increase the amount of information about the distributions of late type stars in the Galaxy. We show here how population synthesis models will help to analyse these surveys and to interprete them in terms of mass function, star formation history and stellar evolution.  相似文献

Novaya Zemlya nuclear test records at the seismic station DRV, Antarctica, are analysed in order to obtain further constraints on a possible differential rotation of the inner core with respect to the mantle. These data allow the sampling of the inner core along a nearly polar path in very stable conditions over more than two decades, from 1966 to 1990. The PKP (BC)– PKP (DF) traveltime residuals, which reflect the inner-core anisotropy and/or heterogeneities sampled along the path, exhibit a great stability through time. A computation of the residuals that are expected for various differential rotation rates and the same rotation axis as the mantle has been performed using the worldwide residual catalogue of Engdahl et al . (1997) for summary rays that include the time as an additional parameter in data stacking. Comparison of data and predictions shows that an eastward differential rotation with a rate as large as 3°  yr−1, as suggested by some authors, is not possible, but an eastward rotation at 1°  yr−1 or lower cannot be rejected.  相似文献

The microfacies of a Lower Cretaceous carbonate drillcore from Oman are characterized using optimizing matrices of Jaccard's similarity coefficients of community. Other than systems tract boundaries, there is no obvious evidence of individual parasequences in the core. However, diagnostic patterns in microfossil distribution identify environmental gradients recording changes in water depth. These gradients are used to define individual parasequences, parasequence sets, stacking patterns and key surfaces. The patterns suggest that deposition was controlled by successive fourth‐ to fifth‐order (high‐frequency) relative sea‐level cycles superimposed on an underlying third‐order relative sea‐level rise. Although the correlation of these depositional subunits to systematic changes in water depth and the rate of carbonate accumulation alone is not incontrovertible proof of such a sea‐level control, concurrent multiorder relative sea‐level cyclicity provides by far the most likely explanation. A microfacies deposited when the water depth was shallowing is characterized by a relay of microfossils with affinities that shallow upwards. Conversely, a microfacies that records a gradual increase in water depth has a relay of microfossils with affinities that deepen upwards. Microfacies characterized by an assemblage of microfossils with similar affinities record deposition when the benthic environmental conditions remained stable, either because of an equilibrium between shallow water carbonate deposition and rising sea level, or in deeper water where sediment composition was relatively insensitive to changes of water depth. Microfacies characterized by mixed affinity assemblages record syndepositional reworking. During periods of embedded multiorder sea‐level changes, individual parasequences within systems tracts are shown to record more complex environmental gradients than simply the repetition of successive shallowing‐up units as traditionally represented in carbonate sequence stratigraphic models. The microfacies of an individual parasequence may shallow up, or may record both deepening‐up and shallowing‐up depositional phases, as well as periods of sedimentation when benthic environments remained stable. Individual parasequence boundaries may be submarine or subaerial unconformities, or be conformable, as part of a predictable stratigraphic pattern related to the temporal position of an individual parasequence within the underlying third‐order cycle of relative sea‐level change. The hitherto ubiquitous use of assemblages to describe carbonate microfacies, coupled with the widespread use of the metre‐scale shallowing‐up template to identify parasequences, may have led to such complexities previously being overlooked.  相似文献
