Field determined hydraulic and chemical transport properties can be useful for the protection of groundwater resources from land-applied chemicals. Most field methods to determine flow and transport parameters are either time or energy consuming and/or they provide a single measurement for a given time period. In this study, we present a dripper-TDR field method that allows measurement of hydraulic conductivity and chemical transport parameters at multiple field locations within a short time period. Specifically, the dripper-TDR determines saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), macroscopic capillary length (λc), immobile water fraction (θim/θ), mass exchange coefficient (α) and dispersion coefficient (Dm). Multiple dripper lines were positioned over five crop rows in a field. Background and step solutions were applied through drippers to determine surface hydraulic conductivity parameters at 44 locations and surface transport properties at 38 locations. The hydraulic conductivity parameters (Ks, λc) were determined by application of three discharge rates from the drippers and measurements of the resultant steady-state flux densities at the soil surface beneath each dripper. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) was used to measure the bulk electrical conductivity of the soil during steady infiltration of a salt solution. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) for all sites were determined from the TDR measurements. The Ks and λc values were found to be lognormally distributed with average values of 31.4 cm h−1 and 6.0 cm, respectively. BTC analysis produced chemical properties, θim/θ, α, and Dm with average values of 0.23, 0.0036 h−1, and 1220 cm2 h−1, respectively. The estimated values of the flow and transport parameters were found to be within the ranges of values reported by previous studies conducted at nearby field locations. The dripper TDR method is a rapid and useful technique for in situ measurements of hydraulic conductivity and solute transport properties. The measurements reported in this study give clear evidence to the occurrence of non-equilibrium water and chemical movement in surface soil. The method allows for quantification of non-equilibrium model parameters and preferential flow. Quantifying the parameters is a necessary step toward determining the influences of surface properties on infiltration, runoff, and vadose zone transport.  相似文献

In situ x-ray data on molar volumes of periclase and tungsten have been collected over the temperature range from 300 K to melting. We determine the temperature by combining the technique of spectroradiometry and electrical resistance wire heating. The thermal expansion (α) of periclase between 300 and 3100 K is given by α=2.6025 10−5+1.3535 10−8 T+6.5687 10−3 T−1−1.8281 T−2. For tungsten, we have (300 to 3600 K) α=7.862 10−6+6.392 10−9 T. The data at 298 K for periclase is: molar volume 11.246 (0.031) cm3, α=3.15 (0.07) 10−5 K−1, and for tungsten: molar volume 9.55 cm3, α=9.77 (10.08) 10−6 K−1. A monostatic sodar was set up at Jodhpur, near the western end of the monsoon trough, to investigate the atmospheric boundary layer dynamics. A 30 m instrumented tower was also located close to the sodar antenna. Data were collected from June to August during the monsoon period of 1990, as also from July 1992 to September 1993. Thermal plumes, surface-based stable layers (both flat or short spiky top and tall spiky top), elevated/multi-layers with or without undulations and dot echo structures were seen; however, erosion of the morning inversion layer in the form of a rising layer with growing thermal plumes under it was rarely seen, and that too only during the winter period. The observed structure of the stable layer with tall spikes and its depth have been found to be correlated with the intensity of the monsoon spell; the dot echoes have been found to be correlated with the approach of a monsoon depression near Jodhpur; and the elevated/multilayers have been attributed to the formation of a subsidence (shear instability).  相似文献

Assessing disease risk has become an important component in the development of climate change adaptation strategies. Here, the infection ability of leaf blast (Magnaporthe oryzae) was modeled based on the epidemiological parameters of minimum (T min), optimum (T opt), and maximum (T max) temperatures for sporulation and lesion development. An infection ability response curve was used to assess the impact of rising temperature on the disease. The simulated spatial pattern of the infection ability index (IAI) corresponded with observed leaf blast occurrence in Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP). The IAI for leaf blast is projected to increase during the winter season (December–March) in 2020 (2010–2039) and 2050 (2040–2069) climate scenarios due to temperature rise, particularly in lower latitudes. However, during monsoon season (July–October), the IAI is projected to remain unchanged or even reduce across the IGP. The results show that the response curve may be successfully used to assess the impact of climate change on leaf blast in rice. The model could be further extended with a crop model to assess yield loss.  相似文献

A total of 59 rainwater samples were collected during the winter and monsoon (1991–92) at Dayalbagh, Agra. This site is relatively free from the influence of anthropogenic emissions and the volume-weighted average concentrations (VWA) of formate in the winter and monsoon were 22.5±6, 16.1±3 while acetate VWAs were 17.1±5 and 13.8±3 mol l-1, respectively. Although the VWAs varied between seasons, it was not statistically different. Total deposition (in mmol m-2) varied between season (winter formate, 1.4; acetate, 1.1; monsoon formate, 7.4; acetate, 6.4). A difference in VWA values may have occurred as a result of the dilution factor; the total rain depth from collected samples in the monsoon was 46 cm while that in winter was 6.3 cm. Sources at this site may be anthropogenic and natural; scavenging from the vapour phase, washout of soil particles and emissions from vegetative sources are probably important sources for formate and acetate.  相似文献

In this paper a method is proposed for computing the eigenfrequencies of small adiabatic barotropic modes of oscillations of rotationally and tidally-distorted stars. The method utilizes Kippenhahn and Thomas approach and concepts of Roche equipotentials to incorporate up to second-order the effects of rotation and tidal distortion terms on the eigenfrequencies. The proposed method has also been used to compute the eigenfrequencies of certain barotropic modes of oscillation of some rotationally and tidally distorted models of 10M , and 2.5M Main-Sequence stars.  相似文献

The bathymetry data of marine bodies have been collected over a century, and the collected data have a wide range of resolution and accuracy. Acquisition of bathymetry data is very costly and time-consuming. One can use the old, low-quality bathymetry data to fill the gap in high-quality, recently acquired bathymetry data after correcting the old data to improve its quality so that it is comparable to the high-quality data. The old data correction can be treated as a nonlinear inverse problem. Simulated annealing (SA) global optimization method was used here in solving this problem. The two sets of data that were used are project survey (PS) and Vietnamese Navy Chart (VNC) data. The PS data were collected in 2000 in an offshore survey from the Vietnam coast in the South China Sea (SCS). The VNC data were obtained by digitizing VNC that was published in 1981. Inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method was used for forward modeling. Weperformed the SA algorithm run starting at a high "temperature," then lowering the "temperature" gradually up to the "critical temperature" and then staying there for the rest of the run. The best model chosen by the algorithm showed an improvement of 63% from the original model. We then constructed a digital bathymetry model (DBM) of the study area with the combined corrected VNC and the PS data.  相似文献

Landform constitutes one of the important factors in establishing a firm relationship between soil development and pertinent morphological characteristics. Therefore, an understanding of the geomorphological processes helps to initiate studies in the characterisation of soil scapes. Landscape-soil relationships also assist in mapping soils rapidly and accurately. Remote sensing data products like aerial photographs and satelite imagery help in the recognition, delineation and satellite imagery help in the recognition, delineation and classification of landforms for genetical studies. Five sample areas selected from heterogeneous climatic environments distinctly reveal geomorphic-soil linkages. In the humid, highly weathered, sedimentary hilly terrain of Tripura, Udalfs, Ochrepts and Orthents are common while in the valleys Aqualfs, and Aquepts occur dominantly. In the arid and hilly terrain of Kutch, shallow Orthents and Orthids form the dominant soils but in the plains, deep Salorthids and Natrargids take a dominant place. The semihumid Malwa plateau and Nagpur consists of Ochrepts and Usterts.  相似文献
