Rainfall distribution patterns (RDPs) are crucial for hydrologic design. Hydrologic modeling is based on Soil Conservation Services (SCS) type RDPs (SCS type I, IA, II, and III). SCS type II method is widely used by hydrologists in arid regions. These RDPs were designed for the USA and similar temperate regions. There is no scientific justification for using SCS type II method in arid regions. The consequences of using SCS type II have impacts on the hydrologic and hydraulic modeling studies. The current paper investigates the validity of the SCS type II and in arid regions. New temporal RDPs were applied and compared with SCS type II RDPs. The produced peak discharges, volumes, maximum inundation depths, top widths, and velocities from both approaches were analyzed. An application is made on the protection channel in Taibah and Islamic Universities campuses in Medina, Saudi Arabia. A methodology was followed which included frequency analysis, catchment modeling, hydrological modeling, and hydraulic modeling. Results indicated that there are considerable consequences on infrastructural design, and hydrologic and hydraulic parameters if inappropriate RDPs are used. The investigation confirmed that the SCS type RDPs do not reflect the actual flood features in arid regions.  相似文献

Toxic organic compounds in wastewater are serious threats for both human and environment healthy states. This study investigates the potential sources of surface water, sediment and groundwater pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) as discharged by wastewater into the River of Oued El bey in northeastern Tunisia. Analysis indicates that the concentration of PAHs and PCBs are high in wastewater and vary from 0.37 to 0.83 mg/L and from 0.28 and 1.18 mg/L, respectively. The spatial distribution of PAHs and PCB in surface water showed a variation between 0.37 to 9.91 mg/L and between 0.1 to 0.47 mg/L, respectively. However, the quality of surface water is changed after wastewater evacuation at Oued Tahouna. The determination of PAH and PCB pollutants in groundwater shows a great interest in the development of water resources. The Concentration of these pollutants varying from 0.0204 to 1.93 mg/L and from 0.0052 to 0.196 mg/L, respectively. For PAH, analysis reveals also that naphtelene, fluorene, anthracene and chrysene are the most detected PAHs compounds in water and sediment samples while benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene are less present and in trace level. Higher concentrations of PAHs and PCBs are found in samples taken close to industrial areas of Bouargoub and Soliman, and wastewater discharge locations in Soliman. Analysis of the spatial distribution of PAHs and PCBs clearly link their higher concentration in water and sediments to wastewater and manufacturing discharges in the study area. In surface sediment, the organic pollutants are present. The cluster analysis for organic pollutants in different state and different matrix highlight a relationship between the wastewater evacuation and the water qualities which confirmed the direct response of the pollution sources on the surface water and groundwater organic pollution quality.  相似文献

Flood mapping is a powerful asset that allows drawing better strategies to contain possible economic repercussions and to rescue the affected population. This work is directly unfolded after the rainfall events that occurred in the north of the country, in February 2015, during which certain cities located in the vicinity of the Tunisian basin of Medjerda were flooded by the overflow of the Medjerda river, causing important damage to the towns of Jendouba and Bou Salem. The present research illustrates the potentiality of Sentinel-1 sensor in detecting flood areas in the upstream of Medjerda river. The Medjerda is the most important river in Tunisia, with an annual water potential reaching 0.8 billion m3. We compared the signature of flood water in vertical transmit and horizontal received (VH) and vertical transmit and vertical received (VV) polarizations of radar data. The study proves that the segregation of land/water areas with a threshold technique is better observed in VH polarization rather than VV polarization.  相似文献

Due to the non-linear coupling between flow and transport equations the simulation of real density driven flow problems requires a lot of computational time and/or heavy equipments. This paper studies the interaction of linear water waves with a moored floating breakwater with a leeward boundary composed from a vertical wall. This describes a real modelling for the case of ports in contrary to the problems of unbounded domains. It involves the application of a partial reflection boundary condition for this sidewall. In fact, the partial reflection problem in practical application is of great importance in the design of a harbour or breakwater and mainly for short waves. The reflection coefficient of the harbour boundary (sidewall) plays an important role in modifying the performance of the floating breakwater. Moreover, it reduces the resonant peaks appearing inside the ports due to the energy accumulation in an enclosed domain. The effects of the variation of structural parameters of the breakwater on the transmitted wave height are discussed in details for various values of partial reflection.  相似文献

Landfilling is a common practice worldwide for solid waste management. The leachate generated at landfill sites contains various organic and inorganic pollutants while it should be treated properly. In this study, the electrocoagulation (EC) process was recognized for its simplicity and effectiveness which was used for the treatment of leachate from the Djebel Chakir landfill site in northern Tunisia. In addition, we investigated the effect of microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi, spore) on sludge production by the application of autoclaving treatment on raw leachate. The application of low current density (15 mA/cm2) within 2 h of treatment and using Al-Al electrodes revealed significant improvement of performance when autoclaving was applied. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen removal increased from 39 to 64% and from 13 to 30%, respectively. The sludge volume was reduced from 40 to 10%, and thus, its handling and disposal costs would be significantly decreased. The energy consumption rate was stable after 40 min of treatment at about 0.8 kWh/kg COD removed. Our study shows that removal of microorganisms by autoclaving prior to the EC process is promising for landfill leachate treatment. However, since autoclaving is far from being practical and cost-effective at full-scale plant, research on coupling EC with an alternative disinfecting process might be of great interest.  相似文献

The present work deals with the groundwater aquifer of the Lower Cretaceous sandstone and its sustainable development in Sinai. The studied aquifer system is the most promising groundwater system in Sinai due to its wide extension, hug storage, and good quality. The objective of this paper aims to elucidate the hydrogeological characteristics of the Lower Cretaceous aquifer. The aquifer system occurs under confined conditions. The top surface of the Lower Cretaceous dips steeply towards the southwest direction with step faults. The average sand percent of the penetrated aquifer attains 54%. The main direction of groundwater flow is generally from southwest and locally is concentric to the center of study area related to the influence of the graben block. The aquifer has a hydraulic gradient generally reaches 0.0011 m/m and attains 0.0028 in central portion of study area. The aquifer parameters (effective porosity, transmissivity, and hydraulic conductivity) increase towards the northeast direction with increasing of the sand percentage. Durov diagram plot revealed that the groundwater has been a final stage evolution represented by a NaCl water type. The groundwater salinity increases towards the central of study area coinciding with groundwater flow. The groundwater salinity of the Lower Cretaceous aquifer is brackish water and varies from 2,510 to 5,256 ppm and unsuitable for drinking and domestic purposes.  相似文献

The use of electro-osmosis in geotechnical engineering has been considered since 1930. Its application has been tested in several sectors like the fight against rising damp in porous materials, the consolidation of soils as well as the remediation of the soils contaminated by oil and heavy metals, etc. The paper presents an experimental study of the electrokinetic phenomena resulting from the application of an electric field to argillaceous sandstones. The electroosmotic tests required the development of a completely new experimental device composed of a confining cell, of a system of measurement and control of the pH of the electrolyte near the electrodes, of a system of control and measurement of the voltage and current at the edges of the sample, and of a system of measurement of inlet (anodic) and outlet (cathodic) flows. Various boundary conditions are considered with and without control of pH. In addition, a micro structural modelling of the electrokinetic phenomena makes it possible to quantify the electro osmotic conductivity with a good agreement with experiments.  相似文献

Fracture network modeling is an essential part of the design, development and performance assessment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems. These systems are created from geothermal resources, usually located several kilometers below the surface of the Earth, by establishing a network of connected fractures through which fluid can flow. The depth of the reservoir makes it impossible to make direct measurements of fractures and data are collected from indirect measurements such as geophysical surveys. An important source of indirect data is the seismic event point cloud generated by the fracture stimulation process. Locations of these points are estimated from recorded micro-seismic signals generated by fracture initiation, propagation and slip. This point cloud can be expressed as a set of three-dimensional coordinates with attributes, for example Se ijk ={(x,y,z);?a|x,y,zR,?aI}. We describe two methods for reconstructing realistic fracture trace lines and planes given the point cloud of seismic events data: Enhanced Brute-Force Search and RANSAC. The methods have been tested on a synthetic data set and on the Habanero data set of Geodynamics’ geothermal project in the Cooper Basin of South Australia. Our results show that the RANSAC method is an efficient and suitable method for the conditional simulation of fracture networks.  相似文献

Traditional flood‐frequency analysis involves the assumption of homogeneity of the flood distribution. However, floods are often generated by heterogeneous distributions composed of a mixture of two or more populations. Differences between the populations may be the result of a number of factors, including seasonal variations in the flood‐producing mechanisms, changes in weather patterns resulting from low‐frequency climate shifts and/or El Niño/La Nina oscillations, changes in channel routing owing to the dominance of within‐channel or floodplain flow, and basin variability resulting from changes in antecedent soil moisture. Not recognizing these physical processes in conventional flood‐frequency analysis probably is the main reason that many frequency distributions do not provide an acceptable fit to flood data. In this paper, we use long‐term hydroclimatic records from the Gila River basin of south‐east and central Arizona in the USA to explore the extent and significance of mixed populations. First, we discuss the probable causes of heterogeneity in the frequency distribution of annual flood and present evidence of its occurrence. Second, we investigate the implications of using various popular homogeneous distributions for predicting peak flows for basins that exhibit mixed population characteristics. Third, we demonstrate how alternative frequency models that explicitly account for floods generated by a mixture of two or more populations are both hydrologically and statistically more appropriate. We illustrate how the selection of the most plausible distribution for flood‐frequency analysis also should be based on hydrological reasoning as opposed to the sole application of the traditional statistical goodness‐of‐fit tests.
