Pollen analysis of sediments from the glacial Lake Trilistnika (2216 m) in the Northwestern Rila Mountains (Bulgaria), supplemented by 13 radiocarbon dates, allowed the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment and vegetation history in postglacial time. The exact time of the cirque glacier retreat is still under discussion but the lake was free of ice before 15,000 cal. BP, when sedimentation of gray silt began. The lateglacial vegetation, composed of Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae and Poaceae, with isolated stands of Pinus and JuniperusEphedra shrubland, dominated during the stadials and partly retreated during the Bølling/Allerød interstadial complex. The afforestation in the early Holocene (11,500–7800 cal. BP) started with the distribution of pioneer Betula forests with groups of Pinus (P. mugo, P. sylvestris and P. peuce) at mid-high altitudes, and Quercus forests with Tilia, Ulmus, Fraxinus, Corylus below the birch zone. The change to more humid and cooler climate ca. 7800–7500 cal. BP favored the vertical migration of Abies, P. sylvestris and P. peuce. The establishment of Fagus sylvatica took place after 5200 cal. BP, when pure or mixed beech communities were formed. The last tree which invaded the coniferous belt between 4300 and 3400 cal. BP was Picea abies. The first expansion maximum of spruce was recorded after ca. 2700 cal. BP. The vegetation development in historical times was also influenced by human interference, indicated by the continuous presence of pollen anthropogenic indicators such as Triticum, Secale, Hordeum, Plantago lanceolata, Rumex, Scleranthus, Juniperus.  相似文献

Detailed field study in southeast Queensland has resulted in the interpretation of an unconformity at the base of the Esk Trough sequence at its contact with the Yarraman Block (Maronghi Creek beds and associated intrusions). Previously this contact had been considered to be faulted. The nature of the unconformity is very variable with the Esk Formation resting on freshly eroded surfaces, on mature palaeosols and on an immature palaeosol. Immediately above the unconformity, the Esk Formation variably comprises scree breccia, fluvial conglomerate and arenite, and alluvial fan conglomerate and arenite. North‐northwest‐south‐southeast‐striking faults are associated with the unconformity. Where the unconformity parallels these faults, it retains a relatively constant character, but where it is cut by these faults, it shows greater variability, a relationship interpreted to result from contemporaneous tectonism. The Glen Howden Fault extends into structurally disturbed areas previously described as ‘fractured anticlines’ and ‘complex anticlines’, which are here interpreted as flower structures and associated features. The south‐southeast extension of the Glen Howden Fault strikes obliquely across the Esk Trough to finally pass into the South Moreton Anticline previously interpreted as a positive flower structure, and resolves structural and stratigraphic observations that previously appeared anomalous. Inferred strike‐slip movement in the Esk Trough resulted from Early to Middle Triassic north‐northwest‐south‐southeast oblique transtension followed by Late Triassic transpression, and similar tectonism probably affected adjacent portions of the Yarraman Block.  相似文献

The elastic properties of CaSnO3 perovskite have been measured by both ultrasonic interferometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction at high pressures. The single-crystal diffraction data collected using a diamond-anvil cell show that CaSnO3 perovskite does not undergo any phase transitions at pressures below 8.5?GPa at room temperature. Ultrasonic measurements in the multianvil press to a maximum pressure of ~8?GPa at room temperature yielded S- and P-wave velocity data as a function of pressure. For a third-order Birch-Murnaghan EoS the adiabatic elastic moduli and their pressure derivatives determined from these velocity data are K S0=167.2±3.1?GPa, K S0=4.89±0.17, G 0=89.3±1.0?GPa, G 0=0.90±0.02. The quoted uncertainties include contributions from uncertainties in both the room pressure length and density of the specimen, as well as uncertainties in the pressure calibration of the multianvil press. Because the sample is a polycrystalline specimen, this value of K S0 represents an upper limit to the Reuss bound (conditions of uniform stress) on the elastic modulus of CaSnO3 perovskite. If the value of αγT is assumed to be 0.01, the value of K S0 corresponds to K T0=165.5±3.1?GPa. The 10 P-V data obtained by single-crystal diffraction were fit with a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation-of-state to obtain the parameters V 0=246.059±0.013 Å3, K T0=162.6±1.0?GPa, K T0=5.6±0.3. Because single-crystal measurements under hydrostatic conditions are made under conditions of uniform stress, they yield bulk moduli equivalent to the Reuss bound on a polycrystalline specimen. The results from the X-ray and ultrasonic experiments are therefore consistent. The bulk modulus of CaSnO3 perovskite lies above the linear trend of K 0 with inverse molar volume, previously determined for Ca perovskites. This prevents an estimation of the bulk modulus of CaSiO3 perovskite by extrapolation. However, our value of G 0 for CaSnO3 perovskite combined with values for CaTiO3 and CaGeO3 forms a linear trend of G 0 with octahedral tilt angle. This allows a lower bound of 150?GPa to be placed on the shear modulus of CaSiO3 by extrapolation.  相似文献

The direction of convergence between the Rivera and North American plates becomes progressively more oblique (in a counter-clockwise sense as measured relative to the trench-normal direction) northwestward along the Jalisco subduction zone. By analogy to other subduction zones, the forces resulting from this distribution of convergence directions are expected to produce a NW moving, fore-arc sliver and a NW–SE stretching of the fore-arc area. Also, a series of roughly arc parallel strike-slip faults may form in the fore-arc area, both onshore and offshore, as is observed in the Aleutian arc.In the Jalisco subduction zone, the Jalisco block has been proposed to represent such a fore-arc sliver. However, this proposal has encountered one major problem. Namely, right-lateral strike-slip faulting within the fore-arc sliver, and between the fore-arc sliver and the North American plate, should be observed. However, evidence for the expected right-lateral strike-slip faulting is sparse. Some evidence for right-lateral strike-slip faulting along the Jalisco block–North American plate boundary (the Tepic–Zacoalco rift system) has been reported, although some disagreement exists. Right-lateral strike-slip faulting has also been reported within the interior of the Jalisco block and in the southern Colima rift, which forms the SE boundary of the Jalisco block.Threefold, multi-channel seismic reflection data were collected in the offshore area of the Jalisco subduction zone off Manzanillo in April 2002 during the FAMEX campaign of the N/O L'Atalante. These data provide additional evidence for recent strike-slip motion within the fore-arc region of the Jalisco subduction zone. This faulting offsets right-laterally a prominent horst block within the southern Colima rift, from which we conclude that the sense of motion along the faulting is dextral. These data also provide additional evidence for recent subsidence within the area offshore of Manzanillo, as has been proposed.  相似文献

Concentrations of manganese in 56 rain events in Wilmington, NC, USA rainwater from April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006 were 11 ± 3 nM for dissolved Mn and 1.2 ± 0.4 nM for particulate Mn. Concentrations of both forms of Mn were higher in terrestrial storms relative to marine events. This observation along with the positive correlation of Mn with pollutant indicators suggests anthropogenic inputs to rain at this location, as has been observed at other locations. The ratio of Mnpart/Mndiss was threefold larger in summer relative to winter rain, which matched the increase of particulate to dissolved Fe in rainwater suggesting influence of Saharan dust during the summer. Like Fe in rain, Mn undergoes photoreduction in rainwater, which has also been shown to be important in Mn cycling in seawater. The flux of Mn removed from the atmosphere via wet deposition is 1.5 × 10−5 moles m−2 yr−1 at this location, which is approximately twice the flux reported from two rainwater studies conducted in the early 1980s on Bermuda. Atmospheric input of Mn to the oceans is important because Mn like Fe is an essential and potentially limiting nutrient. Experiments mixing authentic rainwater and seawater demonstrate that rainwater dissolved Mn does not rapidly precipitate in seawater suggesting wet deposition is an important source of soluble, stable Mn to surface seawater.  相似文献

Tides and wind-driven mixing play a major role in promoting post-bloom productivity in subarctic shelf seas. Whether this is also true in the high Arctic remains unknown. This question is particularly relevant in a context of increasing Arctic Ocean stratification in response to global climatic change. We have used a three-dimensional ocean-sea ice-plankton ecosystem model to assess the contribution of tides and strong wind events to summer (June-August 2001) primary production in the Barents Sea. Tides are responsible for 20% (60% locally) of the post-bloom primary production above Svalbard Bank and east of the Kola Peninsula. By contrast, more than 9% of the primary production is due to winds faster than 8 m s−1 in the central Barents Sea. Locally, this contribution reaches 25%. In the marginal ice zone, both tides and wind events have only a limited effect on primary production (<2%). Removing tides or winds faster than 8 m s−1 promotes a regime more sustained by regenerated production with a f-ratio (i.e. the proportion of nitrate-based “new” primary production in the total primary production) that decreases by up to 26% (east of the Kola Peninsula) or 35% (central Barents Sea), respectively. When integrated over all Barents Sea sub-regions, tides and strong wind events account, respectively, for 6.8% (1.55 Tg C; 1 Tg C=1012 g C) and 4.1% (0.93 Tg C) of the post-bloom primary production (22.6 Tg C). To put this in context, this contribution to summer primary production is equivalent to the spring bloom integrated over the Svalbard area. Tides and winds are significant drivers of summer plankton productivity in the Barents Sea.  相似文献

A new generation of global geopotential models (GGM) is being developed. These solutions offer a file with fully-normalized spherical harmonic coefficients of the Earth’s gravitational potential up to a degree greater than 2000 with very low commission errors. This paper analyses the recent Earth Gravitational Model EGM2008, developed up to degree and order 2159 with additional coefficients to degree 2190 and order 2159, which means recovering the gravitational field up to approximately 20 km wavelengths. 223 GPS/levelling points of the new Spanish High Precision Levelling Network in the Valencia region (Eastern Spain) are used as external tool for evaluation in that particular region. The same evaluation has been performed to other different global (EGM96 and EIGENCG03C), continental (EGG97), regional (IGG2005 and IBERGEO2006) and local (GCV07) geoid models for comparison purposes only. These comparisons show that EGM2008 is the geoid model that best fits to the GPS/levelling data in that region.  相似文献
