This paper addresses itself to one of the problems inherent in any spatial analysis of census data, namely the variable size of the enumeration units. This variation renders some proportions unstable, due to the small numbers involved. Attempts to overcome this, using visual methods, can be unsatisfactory, whilst doing nothing to aid statistical analysis. Chi-square maps are suggested as a satisfactory alternative in both contexts, and data for Reading, Berkshire are displayed to illustrate this. These maps suggest that some inferences, based upon indicators derived from proportions, may be unsound.  相似文献

A detailed study of particulate and dissolved cadmium distributions on 83 seawater samples from six profiles in the open North Atlantic Ocean showed a relatively homogenous distribution. The mean concentration of cadmium was 60 ± 27 ng/kg and the median concentration of particulate cadmium was 0.2 ng/kg. Although there are regional differences in dissolved cadmium concentrations among stations, it is suggested that cadmium behaves essentially as an inert element in sea water.Particulate cadmium is enriched by about a factor of four in samples from less than 400 m compared to samples from deeper than 1000 m. The high concentrations in surface waters are suggested to be due to aeolian transport of anthropogenically derived cadmium.Additional analyses of cadmium in the Gulf of Maine show a mean value of 230 ng/kg. The higher values in the Gulf of Maine are ascribed to the influence of continental runoff. Twelve sediment samples from the open North Atlantic show a relatively homogenous distribution, ranging from 0.13 to 0.21 ppm on a dry-weight basis.  相似文献

An influence of oil additions (0–3% w/w) on the vacuum filtration of fine coal has been investigated. The results show that an oil addition of 1% can lead to a lowering of filter-cake moisture from 26% (wet basis) to 16% (wet basis). This considerable lowering of filter-cake moisture is accompanied by an increase in both filtration rate and solids pick-up rate. The results are qualitatively interpreted in terms of a flocculation process in which oil droplets condense at the particle contact points to form pendular bridges.  相似文献

Surfboard-making is concentrated in regions with vibrant surfing subcultures, suitable waves and sufficient expertise in crafting boards, by hand, to suit prevailing coastal conditions. This article charts the rise of the Gold Coast as Australia's most concentrated cluster of surfboard-making, from its origins as do-it-yourself craft in backyards and sheds, to professional, export-oriented industry. Out of highly informal, subcultural origins, a regional cluster emerged in the 1960s, fuelled by the growth of surfing, tourism and suburban development, and by the needs of surfers for customised boards that suit their body size, surfing style and local wave conditions. What transpired was a vernacular form of coastal creative industry combining craft skills, subcultural knowledge and design flair. Nevertheless, a mix of factors, including automation, increased competition from cheap imports, increasingly aggressive retail trade, and mistrust among board-makers, has threatened viability. Some workshops overextended into export production, marketing and automation, and consequently suffered from exposure to risk (as well as a commensurate decline in regional tourism). Others survived, and in some ways turned full circle: those small workshops continuing to service local markets, within their means, were most able to ride out the industry's turbulent times. Small-scale cultural production persists despite the volatility of the larger brands, geared instead around loyal customers who want hand-crafted boards made by shapers who they know and trust.  相似文献

In order to determine the effect of Eulerian spatial resolution on the two particle statistics of synthetic drifter trajectories, we examine a hierarchy of ocean models, starting from 2D turbulence simulations, progressing to idealized simulations of a buoyant coastal jet with ROMS, and finally to realistic HYCOM simulations of the Gulf Stream. In each case, particle dispersion at large time and space scales is found to be controlled by energetic meso-scale features of the flow that are relatively insensitive to the resolution of finer scale motions. In all cases, time-distance graphs given in terms of computed Finite Scale Lyapunov Exponents show an expected increase in the extent of exponential scaling with increasing spatial smoothing of the velocity field. The limiting value of the FSLE at small separation distances is found to scale remarkably well with the resolution of Eulerian velocity gradients as given by the average of positive Okubo–Weiss parameter values.  相似文献

Type B CAIs are subdivided into B1s, with well-developed melilite mantles, and B2s, with randomly distributed melilite. Despite intensive study, the origin of the characteristic melilite mantle of the B1s remains unclear. Recently, we proposed that formation of the melilite mantle is caused by depletion of the droplet surface in volatile magnesium and silicon due to higher evaporation rates of volatile species compared to their slow diffusion rates in the melt, thus making possible crystallization of melilite at the edge of the CAI first, followed by its crystallization in the central parts at lower temperatures. Here, we present the results of an experimental study that aimed to reproduce the texture observed in natural Type B CAIs. First, we experimentally determined crystallization temperatures of melilite for three melt compositions, which, combined with literature data, allowed us to find a simple relationship between the melt composition, crystallization temperature, and composition of first crystallizing melilite. Second, we conducted a series of evaporation and cooling experiments exposing CAI-like melts to gas mixtures with different oxygen fugacities (fO2). Cooling of the molten droplets in gases with logfO2?IW-4 resulted in crystallization of randomly distributed melilite, while under more reducing conditions, melilite mantles have been formed. Chemical profiles through samples quenched right before melilite started to crystallize showed no chemical gradients in samples exposed to relatively oxidizing gases (logfO2?IW-4), while the near-surface parts of the samples exposed to very reducing gases (logfO2?IW-7) were depleted in volatile MgO and SiO2, and enriched in refractory Al2O3. Using these experimental results and the fact that the evaporation rate of magnesium and silicon from CAI-like melts is proportional to , we estimate that Type B1 CAIs could be formed by evaporation of a partially molten precursor in a gas of solar composition with . Type B2 CAIs could form by slower evaporation of the same precursors in the same gas with .  相似文献

Zr-in-rutile thermometry in HP/UHP eclogites from Western China   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Four Zr-in-rutile thermometry calibrations are applied to eclogites from Western China. Here, we show that if rutile grows in equilibrium with Qtz and Zrn, and is isolated inside garnet, it preserves its Zr composition and does not undergo compositional change due to cation exchange with the host garnet. It thus preserves the composition for the PT conditions of its formation and the growth zoning of the host garnet. For the HP/UHP metamorphic temperature, the Tomkins et al. (J Metamorph Geol 25:703–713, 2007) calibration yields temperatures that agree well with previous studies, whereas the other three calibrations (Zack et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 148:471–488, 2004; Watson et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 151:413–433, 2006; Ferry and Watson in Contrib Mineral Petrol in 154:429–437, 2007), which do not include a pressure correction, give systematically lower temperatures. Zr contents of rutile inclusions within garnet show systematic decrease from garnet core to rim. The rutile inclusions in garnet rims contain the lowest Zr content, similar to that in the matrix. Analyses confirm that the pressure plays a significant role in modifying the primary temperature dependence of the Zr content of rutile. Rutiles trapped in garnets are unable to re-equilibrate easily during retrogression, but those in the matrix can do so, providing retrograde PT path information.  相似文献
