Physicochemical behavior of tropical laterite soil stabilized with non-traditional additive 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Non-traditional soil stabilizers are widely used for treating weak materials. These additives are cost- and time-effective alternatives to more traditional materials such as lime and cement. It has been well established that the treatment of natural soil with chemical additives will gradually affect the size, shape, and arrangement of soil particles. Furthermore, the degree of improvement is dependent on the quantity and the pattern of new products formed on and around the soil particles. In this paper, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test was performed as an index of soil improvement on mix designs treated with calcium-based powder stabilizer (SH-85). The time-dependent changes in shear strength parameter and compressibility behavior of treated soil were also studied using standard direct shear and one-dimensional consolidation tests. In order to better understand the shape and surface area of treated particles, FESEM, N2-BET, and particle size distribution analysis were performed on soil-stabilizer matrix. From engineering standpoint, the UCS results showed that the degree of improvement for SH-85-stabilized laterite soil was roughly five times stronger than the untreated soil at the early stages of curing (7-day period). Also, a significant increase in the compressibility resistance of treated samples with curing time was observed. Based on the results, less porous and denser soil fabric was seen on the surface of clay particles. FESEM images of the treated mix designs showed the formation of white lumps in the soil fabric with the cementitious gel filling the pores in the soil structure. 相似文献

One of the most important scientific concerns of the last few decades is climate change, which is the result of a great many factors like global warming. Although a number of studies have been dedicated to understand the phenomenon of climate change, more attention is required to understand the potential effects of global warming on the ecosystems as well as on human life. The present study was designed to survey the trends of minimum, maximum and mean temperatures, relative humidity, and the time series of annual precipitation and 10-year moving average low-pass filter in the 13 synoptic weather stations of Iran’s arid and semi-arid regions during the last 55 years by using τ Kendall test. The analyses indicate a significantly increasing trend for the minimum and mean temperatures while a decreasing trend for the mean relative humidity in the arid and semi-arid regions, especially during the last few years up to the year 2000. Any clear increasing or decreasing trend was not found for the maximum temperature, while the precipitation did not show any increasing/decreasing trend for most of the surveyed stations. Further studies, with long-term programming, are recommended to be carried out to evaluate the climate change and its effects on such regions. 相似文献

Ore grade is the most important source of uncertainty in a mining operation which plays an important role to classify run-of-mine (ROM) material into ore and waste parcels. As a widely used method, kriging estimator is used to estimate the grade of ore blocks. In conventional mining practices, if the estimated grade of a parcel is above the cut-off grade, this parcel is classified as ore, otherwise, is labelled as a waste parcel. An alternative approach is to simultaneously consider the grade of parcels and the economic consequences of sending parcels to destinations by applying simulation-based methods. In this study, kriging and simulation-based methods including loss and profit functions are applied on a real-world case study to classify ore/waste material based on the initial exploration data. Then, the actual known data, collected from blast holes samples, are compared with the estimated results in order to validate the performance of the presented methods. The 2004 tsunami that struck the Sumatra coast gave a warning sign to Malaysia that it is no longer regarded as safe from a future tsunami attack. Since the event, the Malaysian Government has formulated its plan of action by developing an integrated tsunami vulnerability assessment technique to determine the vulnerability levels of each sector along the 520-km-long coastline of the north-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The scope of assessment is focused on the vulnerability of the physical characteristics of the coastal area, and the vulnerability of the built environment in the area that includes building structures and infrastructures. The assessment was conducted in three distinct stages which stretched across from a macro-scale assessment to several local-scale and finally a micro-scale assessment. On a macro-scale assessment, Tsunami Impact Classification Maps were constructed based on the results of the tsunami propagation modelling of the various tsunami source scenarios. At this stage, highly impacted areas were selected for an assessment of the local hazards in the form of local flood maps based on the inundation modelling output. Tsunami heights and flood depths obtained from these maps were then used to produce the Tsunami Physical Vulnerability Index (PVI) maps. These maps recognize sectors within the selected areas that are highly vulnerable to a maximum tsunami run-up and flood event. The final stage is the development of the Structural Vulnerability Index (SVI) maps, which may qualitatively and quantitatively capture the physical and economic resources that are in the tsunami inundation zone during the worst-case scenario event. The results of the assessment in the form of GIS-based Tsunami-prone Vulnerability Index (PVI and SVI) maps are able to differentiate between the various levels of vulnerability, based on the tsunami height and inundation, the various levels of impact severity towards existing building structures, property and land use, and also indicate the resources and human settlements within the study area. Most importantly, the maps could help planners to establish a zoning scheme for potential coastline development based on its sensitivity to tsunami. As a result, some recommendations on evacuation routes and tsunami shelters in the potentially affected areas were also proposed to the Government as a tool for relief agencies to plan for safe evacuation. 相似文献

Due to the widespread use of granites as building and ornamental materials, measurements of natural radioactivity for a total 27 selected samples of commercial granites used in Egypt were carried out by using a high pure germanium detector. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K of commercial granites ranged from 25 to 356, 5 to 161, and 100 to 1,796?(Bq?kg?1), respectively. The concentrations of these radionuclides are compared with the international recommended values. To evaluate the radiological hazard of the natural radioactivity, the radium equivalent activity, the absorbed dose rate, the effective dose rate, and the hazard index have been calculated. The radium equivalent activity Raeq varied from 41 to 669?(Bq?kg?1) which exceeds the permitted value (370?Bq?kg?1) and the internal hazard index H in varied from 0.2 to 2.8 which is higher than 1. The absorbed dose rate due to the natural radioactivity in the samples under investigation ranged from 19 to 310?(nGy?h?1). The complexity of the evapotranspiration process and its variability in time and space have imposed some limitations on previously developed evapotranspiration models. In this study, two data‐driven models: genetic programming (GP) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), and statistical regression models were developed and compared for estimating the hourly eddy covariance (EC)‐measured actual evapotranspiration (AET) using meteorological variables. The utility of the investigated data‐driven models was also compared with that of HYDRUS‐1D model, which makes use of conventional Penman–Monteith (PM) model for the prediction of AET. The latent heat (LE), which is measured using the EC method, is modelled as a function of five climatic variables: net radiation, ground temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in a reconstructed landscape located in Northern Alberta, Canada. Several ANN models were evaluated using two training algorithms of Levenberg–Marquardt and Bayesian regularization. The GP technique was used to generate mathematical equations correlating AET to the five climatic variables. Furthermore, the climatic variables, as well as their two‐factor interactions, were statistically analysed to obtain a regression equation and to indicate the climatic factors having significant effect on the evapotranspiration process. HYDRUS‐1D model as an available physically based model was examined for estimating AET using climatic variables, leaf area index (LAI), and soil moisture information. The results indicated that all three proposed data‐driven models were able to approximate the AET reasonably well; however, GP and regression models had better generalization ability than the ANN model. The results of HYDRUS‐1D model exhibited that a physically based model, such as HYDRUS‐1D, might be comparable or even inferior to the data‐driven models in terms of the overall prediction accuracy. Geological, petrological and geochemical studies indicated that there are two distinct types of granitoid rocks: older quartz diorites to granodiorite assemblage and younger granitoids, the latter occurring in two phases. The older granitoids have a meta-aluminous chemistry and a calc-alkaline character, with high MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, P2O5, Sr and low SiO2, K2O, and Rb.
