We present spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the luminous lensing cluster Abell 2390, using observations made with the Chandra observatory. The temperature of the X-ray gas rises with increasing radius within the central ∼ 200 kpc of the cluster, and then remains approximately isothermal, with kT =11.5−1.6 +1.5 keV , out to the limits of the observations at r ∼1.0 Mpc . The total mass profile determined from the Chandra data has a form in good agreement with the predictions from numerical simulations. Using the parametrization of Navarro, Frenk and White, we measure a scale radius r s ∼0.8 Mpc and a concentration parameter c ∼3 . The best-fitting X-ray mass model is in good agreement with independent gravitational lensing results and optical measurements of the galaxy velocity dispersion in the cluster. The X-ray gas to total mass ratio rises with increasing radius with f gas ∼21 per cent at r =0.9 Mpc . The azimuthally averaged 0.3–7.0 keV surface brightness profile exhibits a small core radius and a clear 'break' at r ∼500 kpc , where the slope changes from S X ∼ ∝ r −1.5 to S X ∼ ∝ r −3.6 . The data for the central region of the cluster indicate the presence of a cooling flow with a mass deposition rate of 200–300 M⊙ yr−1 and an effective age of 2–3 Gyr . 相似文献

The stratigraphy of the Eocene-Miocene peripheral foreland basin in Switzerland consists of basal deposits of Nummulitic Limestones and Globigerina Marls representing a phase of deepening, followed by two shallowing-up megacycles culminating in fully continental sedimentation. The onset of sedimentation was diachronous and took place on an unconformity surface with increasing stratigraphic gap to the north and west. In the Ultrahelvetic units, which were derived from the south and have a provenance between the Helvetic shelf and the Penninic ocean, the stratigraphic gap is minimal. This restricts the initiation of erosion of the southern European margin due to emersion to post-Maastrichtian and pre-late Palaeocene. This coincides with the final closing of the Valais trough and may therefore be interpreted as the point at which continental flexure s. s. started. In the autochthon, the subcrop map of the unconformity surface shows that the regional pattern of subcropping units is oblique to both neo-Alpine tectonic structures and Helvetic (Mesozoic) passive margin structures. There are local zones of disruption to the broad regional pattern suggesting that the basal unconformity was corrugated. Both the paliaspastic restoration of the autochthon relative to the thrust front during the Palaeocene, and the regional pattern of erosion indicate that the basal unconformity may be due to erosion of a flexural forebulge. Following deposition of the shallow water Nummulitic Limestones and the deeper water Globigerina Marls, clastic sediments were shed from the orogenic wedge in the south. These turbidites, the Taveyannaz Sandstones, filled both ponded basins at the contemporaneous thrust front and the frontal trench or foredeep. Evidently, early thrusts drove at a shallow level into the embryonic basin as ‘front-runners’, whereas most shortening and uplift continued to take place within the main part of the orogenic wedge further to the south. Eventually, the frontal palaeohighs, together with the turbidite basins, were buried by the northward emplacement of surface mud-slides, and sediment depocentres were translated northwards onto the foreland. The most likely cause of the underfilled ‘Flysch’ stage is the rapid advance of a submarine thrust wedge over the flexed European plate which resulted in (i) low sediment fluxes and (ii) high subsidence rates associated with the rapid migration of the load and depocentre. Later, as the rate of advance slowed and the wedge became subaerially exposed, the basin rapidly filled with coarse-grained detritus representing the ‘Molasse’ stage. 相似文献

Here we present the first proof of an impact origin for the Saqqar circular structure in northwestern Saudi Arabia (Neville et al. 2014 ), with an apparent diameter of 34 km, centered at 29°35′N, 38°42′E. The structure is formed in Cambrian–Devonian siliciclastics and is unconformably overlain by undeformed Cretaceous and Paleogene sediments. The age of impact is not well constrained and lies somewhere between 410 and 70 Ma. The subsurface structure is constrained by 2‐D reflection seismic profiles and six drilled wells. First‐order structural features are a central uplift that rises approximately 2 km above regional datums, surrounded by a ring syncline. The crater rim is defined by circumferential normal faults. The central uplift and ring syncline correspond to a Bouguer gravity high and an annular ring‐like low, respectively. The wells were drilled within the central uplift, the deepest among them exceed 2 km depth. Sandstone core samples from these wells show abundant indicators of a shock metamorphic overprint. Planar deformation features (PDFs) were measured with orientations along (0001), {103}, and less frequently along {101} and {104}. Planar fractures (PFs) predominantly occur along (0001) and {101}, and are locally associated with feather features (FFs). In addition, some shocked feldspar grains and strongly deformed mica flakes were found. The recorded shock pressure ranges between 5 and 15 GPa. The preserved level of shock and the absence of an allochthonous crater fill suggest that Saqqar was eroded by 1–2 km between the Devonian and Maastrichtian. The documentation of unequivocal shock features proves the formation of the Saqqar structure by a hypervelocity impact event. 相似文献

We present near-infrared (NIR) adaptive optics-assisted spectroscopic observations of the CO (Δμ= 2) absorption bands towards the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. The observations were made with NAOS-CONICA (on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope) and have a full width at half-maximum resolution of 0.15 arcsec (14 pc). Kinematic analysis of the observations reveals a decoupled core and strongly non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity profiles in the central 0.2 arcsec (19 pc). NIR imaging also indicates an asymmetric elongation of the central isophotes in the same region.
We use spherical orbit-superposition models to interpret the kinematics, using a set of orthogonal 'eigen-velocity profiles' that allow us to fit models directly to spectra. Analyses of Martian surface soil by Viking and Earth-based telescopes have been interpreted as indicating a regolith dominated by the weathering products of mafic or ultramafic rocks. Basaltic glass has previously been proposed as a more likely precursor than crystalline rock, given the low efficiency of surface weathering under present Martian conditions. On Earth large volumes of basaltic glass formed by quenching of magma by water. A similar interaction, between magma and ground ice, may have been a common occurrence on Mars. On the basis of this scenario palagonite, the alteration product of basaltic sideromelane glass, was studied as a possible analog to Martian soil. Samples from Iceland, Alaska, Antarctica, Hawaii, and the desert of New Mexico and Mexico were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, X-ray diffraction, spectrophotometry, and magnetic and thermogravimetric analysis. We suggest that palagonite is a good analog to the surface soil of Mars in chemical composition, particle size, spectral signature, and magnetic properties. Our model for the formation of fine-grained Martian surface soil begins with eruptions of basaltic magma through ground ice, forming deposits of glassy tuff. Individual glass shards are then altered by low-temperature hydrothermal systems to palagonitic material. Dehydration and aeolian abrasion strip the alteration rinds from the glass, and wind storms distribute the silt-sized palagonitic fragments in a planet-wide deposit. 相似文献

We investigate a potential field calculation for off disk-center vector magnetograms that uses all the three components of the measured field. There is neither any need for interpolation of grid points between the image plane and the heliographic plane nor for an extension or a truncation to a heliographic rectangle. Hence, the method provides the maximum information content from the photospheric field as well as the most consistent potential field independent of the viewing angle. In an endeavour to resolve reported discrepancies in the value of the branching ratio of176Lu at astrophysical energies, a new determineation of the175Lu (nγ)176mLu capture cross section has been measured as 958 ± 58 mb. This gives a value of the branching ratio of 0.21 ±0.05. This result
indicates that some reequilibration of the ground and isomeric states of176Lu occurs in stellar environments undergoing s-process nucleosynthesis, and confirms that176Lu is not a reliable cosmochronometer. However the very existence of176Lu in the solar system implies that the ground state of176Lu was not completely depopulated, and provides the possibility of using this nuclide as a sensitive thermometer for stellar
