We present a new, expanded and improved catalog of Ultraviolet (UV) sources from the GALEX All-Sky Imaging survey: GUVcat_AIS (Bianchi et al. in Astrophys. J. Suppl. Ser. 230:24, 2017). The catalog includes 83 million unique sources (duplicate measurements and rim artifacts are removed) measured in far-UV and near-UV. With respect to previous versions (Bianchi et al. in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 411:2770 2011a, Adv. Space Res. 53:900–991, 2014), GUVcat_AIS covers a slightly larger area, 24,790 square degrees, and includes critical corrections and improvements, as well as new tags, in particular to identify sources in the footprint of extended objects, where pipeline source detection may fail and custom-photometry may be necessary. The UV unique-source catalog facilitates studies of density of sources, and matching of the UV samples with databases at other wavelengths. We also present first results from two ongoing projects, addressing respectively UV variability searches on time scales from seconds to years by mining the GALEX photon archive, and the construction of a database of ~120,000 GALEX UV spectra (range ~1300–3000 Å), including quality and calibration assessment and classification of the grism, hence serendipitous, spectral sources.  相似文献

Protection against flooding by the sea, drainage of rainwater and integrated management of groundwater and surface-water resources are key issues in low-lying coastal areas. However, under exceptional circumstances, knowledge to keep coastal areas dry and habitable can be used otherwise. Inundation for military purposes is such an example. The hydrogeology of the inundation at the Yser River, Belgium, during the Great War is studied. The inundation started in October 1914 to stop the German advance and lasted until 1918. A water balance and groundwater model are combined to derive the water balance before and during the inundation and to study the impact on the groundwater system. It is concluded that a number of hydrogeological factors contributed to the effectiveness of the inundation. Most importantly, the low-permeability subsoil facilitated loss of inundation water mainly by evaporation. Further, the normal water management strategy of the area (aimed at evacuating excess water towards the sea) was reversed to keep water between the opposing armies. However, the duration of the inundation meant a reorganization of the drainage of areas not inundated; truly an exercise in integrated water management.  相似文献

A wavetrain of high-frequency (HF) P waves from a large earthquake, when recorded at a distant station, looks like a segment of modulated noise, with its duration close to the duration of rupture. These wavetrains, with their bursts and fadings, look much more intermittent than a segment of common stationary random noise. We try to describe quantitatively this bursty behavior. To this end, variogram and spectral analyses are applied to time histories of P-wave envelopes (squared-amplitude or instant-power signals) in six HF bands of 1-Hz width. Nine M w = 7.6–9.2 earthquakes were examined, using, in total, 232 records and 992 single-band traces. Variograms of integrated instant power are approximately linear on a log–log scale, indicating that the correlation structure of the instant-power signal is approximately self-similar. Also, estimates of the power spectrum of the instant-power signal look approximately linear on a log–log scale. Log–log slopes of the variograms and spectra deliver estimates of the Hurst exponent H that are mostly in the range 0.6–0.9, markedly above the value H = 0.5 of uncorrelated (white-noise) signals. The preferred estimate over the entire data set is H = 0.83, still, this estimate may include some bias, and must be treated as preliminary. The inter-event scatter of H estimates is about 0.04, reflecting individual event-to-event variations of H. Many of the average log–log spectral plots show slight concavity that perturbs the approximately linear slope; this is a secondary effect that seems to be mostly related to the limited bandwidth of the data. Evidence is given in support of the idea that the observed approximately self-similar correlation structure of the P-wave envelope originates in a similar structure of the body wave instant-power signal radiated by the source, so that the propagation-related distortions can be regarded as limited. The facts presented suggest that the space–time organization of the earthquake rupture process is multiscaled and bears significant fractal features; it deviates from the brittle-crack model with its two well-separated characteristic scales. Phenomenologically, the high-frequency body-wave radiation from an earthquake source can be thought of as a product of stationary noise and the square root of a positive random envelope function with a power-law spectrum. From the viewpoint of applications, the self-similarity of body wave envelopes provides a useful constraint for earthquake source models used to simulate strong ground motions.  相似文献

We report a coordinated analytical study of matrix material in the Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrite in which the same small (?20 μm) fragments were measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). SIMS analysis reveals H and N isotopic anomalies (hotspots), ranging from hundreds to thousands of nanometers in size, which are present throughout the fragments. Although the differences in spatial resolution of the SIMS techniques we have used introduce some uncertainty into the exact location of the hotspots, in general, the H and N isotopic anomalies are spatially correlated with C enrichments, suggesting an organic carrier. TEM analysis, enabled by site-specific extraction using a focused-ion-beam scanning-electron microscope, shows that the hotspots contain an amorphous component, Fe-Ni sulfides, serpentine, and mixed-cation carbonates. TEM imaging reveals that the amorphous component occurs in solid and porous forms, EDS indicates that it contains abundant C, and EELS and XANES at the C K edge reveal that it is largely aromatic. This amorphous component is probably macromolecular C, likely the carrier of the isotopic anomalies, and similar to the material extracted from bulk samples as insoluble organic matter. However, given the large sizes of some of the hotspots, the disparity in spatial resolution among the various techniques employed in our study, and the phases with which they are associated, we cannot entirely rule out that some of the isotopic anomalies are carried by inorganic material, e.g., sheet silicates. The isotopic composition of the organic matter points to an initially primitive origin, quite possibly within cold interstellar clouds or the outer reaches of the solar protoplanetary disk. The association of organic material with secondary phases, e.g., serpentine and carbonates, suggests that the organic matter was susceptible to parent-body processing, and thus, isotopic dilution.  相似文献

Conceptual equations are presented for the net benefits, total risk, and total vulnerability associated with hazard zone occupation. It is shown that, as they are polycausal phenomena, landslides require a more sophisticated approach to this form of analysis than that employed for most other forms of hazard.Three examples of landsliding are examined. At Cuyocuyo, in the Peruvian Cordillera Oriental, slope instability is virtually inevitable, but human intervention may be disturbing some very fragile natural equilibria. At Calciano, in southern Italy, deforestation has resulted in a mudflow disaster, although man-made factors are not the only causes at work. Finally, in the Valle dell'Orco (also in southern Italy) demographic and agrarian change have aided the partial metamorphosis of the catchment into a large-scale mudflow complex (although the longer-term causes are natural, tectonic ones). These examples illustrate parts of the continuum that extends from dominant natural to dominant anthropogenic causes.Human intervention has played a key role in stimulating the natural antecedents of landslides occurring in the study areas. It is concluded that risk perception has not been wide enough to promote adequate risk mitigation, in part because of a failure properly to conceive of landslides as polycausal phenomena, in which man-made causes effectively cannot—and should not—be separated from natural ones.  相似文献

Four seasonal oceanographic cruises were carried out in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, within the framework of the CEC/MAST-MTP Project PELAGOS, during 1994–1995. The surveys covered the South Aegean Sea and the adjacent open sea regions (southeastern Ionian, northwestern Levantine). Analysis of CTD data revealed that a multiscaled circulation pattern prevails in the area. It differs from the circulations detected during the 1986–87, thus indicating interannual variability. Cyclonic and anticyclonic gyres and eddies are interconnected by currents and jets variable in space and time. Most of the features are persistent, others seem transitional or recurrent. The hydrological structure is also complex and apart from the upper layer does not present basinwide any significant seasonality. Dynamical and hydrological regimes are variable in the upper and intermediate layers at the Straits of the Cretan Arc, while the deep regime seems rather constant. Topographic control is evident on the flows through the straits. The new very dense deep water mass, namely the Cretan Deep Water (CDW) and a well-defined intermediate layer of minimum temperature and salinity, the so-called Transition Mediterranean Water (TMW), consists the new important structural elements of the South Aegean Sea. The CDW outflows towards the deep and bottom layers of the Eastern Mediterranean, thus considerably contributing to the formation of the new, denser Deep and Bottom Water of the Eastern Mediterranean, which sinks and displaces the Eastern Mediterranean Deep Water of Adriatic origin in the adjacent sea regions outside the Aegean Sea.  相似文献

This study back-calculated moduli and shear strength of soils in London Canal Ave., New Orleans, using full-scale load test data, and re-evaluated the behavior of the I-wall to explore how the existing levees and floodwalls may be reliably retrofitted and future levees and floodwalls may be designed. From the back-calculation, it turned out that the moduli of the field soils were mostly higher (1–12 times) than magnitudes appeared in Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET). But the shear strength of a water-glazed Marsh layer in the gap turned out to be substantially lower (0.2–0.25 times) than the magnitude appeared in IPET. This much strength reduction was confirmed by field vane shear tests: tests with artificial water infiltration into the field vane hole presented immeasurably low disturbed strength and resulted in very high sensitivity that might contributed to the failure. This study also shows that the gap development and strength reduction in the water-glazed Marsh layer are two main causes of levee failure, which have been predicted in previous research. The stiffer-than-expected moduli of underlain layers did not affect the failure mechanism of the levee substantially because these underlain layers remained elastic. Therefore, retrofitting solutions should be the ones that may prevent the gap development and to reinforce the Marsh layer.  相似文献

The next generation of climate-driven, disease prediction models will most likely require a mechanistically based, dynamical framework that parameterizes key processes at a variety of locations. Over the next two decades, consensus climate predictions make it possible to produce forecasts for a number of important infectious diseases that are largely independent of the uncertainty of longer-term emissions scenarios. In particular, the role of climate in the modulation of seasonal disease transmission needs to be unravelled from the complex dynamics resulting from the interaction of transmission with herd immunity and intervention measures that depend upon previous burdens of infection. Progress is also needed to solve the mismatch between climate projections and disease projections at the scale of public health interventions. In the time horizon of seasons to years, early warning systems should benefit from current developments on multi-model ensemble climate prediction systems, particularly in areas where high skill levels of climate models coincide with regions where large epidemics take place. A better understanding of the role of climate extremes on infectious diseases is urgently needed.  相似文献

Water temperature dynamics in High Arctic river basins   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Despite the high sensitivity of polar regions to climate change and the strong influence of temperature upon ecosystem processes, contemporary understanding of water temperature dynamics in Arctic river systems is limited. This research gap was addressed by exploring high‐resolution water column thermal regimes for glacier‐fed and non‐glacial rivers at eight sites across Svalbard during the 2010 melt season. Mean water column temperatures in glacier‐fed rivers (0.3–3.2 °C) were lowest and least variable near the glacier terminus but increased downstream (0.7–2.3 °C km–1). Non‐glacial rivers, where discharge was sourced primarily from snowmelt runoff, were warmer (mean: 2.9–5.7 °C) and more variable, indicating increased water residence times in shallow alluvial zones and increased potential for atmospheric influence. Mean summer water temperature and the magnitude of daily thermal variation were similar to those of some Alaskan Arctic rivers but low at all sites when compared with alpine glacierized environments at lower latitudes. Thermal regimes were correlated strongly (p < 0.01) with incoming short‐wave radiation, air temperature, and river discharge. Principal drivers of thermal variability were inferred to be (i) water source (i.e. glacier melt, snowmelt, groundwater); (ii) exposure time to the atmosphere; (iii) prevailing meteorological conditions; (iv) river discharge; (v) runoff interaction with permafrost and buried ice; and (vi) basin‐specific geomorphological features (e.g. channel morphology). These results provide insight into the potential changes in high‐latitude river systems in the context of projected warming in polar regions. We hypothesize that warmer and more variable temperature regimes may prevail in the future as the proportion of bulk discharge sourced from glacial meltwater declines and rivers undergo a progressive shift towards snow water and groundwater sources. Importantly, such changes could have implications for aquatic species diversity and abundance and influence rates of ecosystem functioning in high‐latitude river systems.
