Using magnetograms, EUV and Hα images, Owens Valley Solar Array microwave observations, and 212-GHz flux density derived from
the Solar Submillimeter Telescope data, we determine the spatial characteristics of the 1B/M6.9 flare that occurred on November
28, 2001, starting at 16:26 UT in active region (AR) NOAA 9715. This flare is associated with a chromospheric mass ejection
or surge observed at 16:42 UT in the Hα images. We compute the coronal magnetic field under the linear force-free field assumption,
constrained by the photospheric data of the Michelson Doppler Imager and loops observed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging
Telescope. The analysis of the magnetic field connectivity allows us to conclude that magnetic field reconnection between
two different coronal/chromospheric sets of arches was at the origin of the flare and surge, respectively. The optically thick
microwave spectrum at peak time shows a shape compatible with the emission from two different sites. Fitting gyrosynchrotron
emission to the observed spectrum, we derive parameters for each source.

Consolidation and deformation around stone columns: Numerical evaluation of analytical solutions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Coupled finite element analyses of the consolidation and deformation around stone columns have been performed to assess the accuracy of different analytical solutions. The numerical model reproduces the hypotheses of the closed-form solutions. In the model, a rigid load is applied to a unit cell formed by a fully penetrating column and its surrounding soil, and simple elastic or elasto-plastic soil models are used. The surface settlement, the dissipation of the pore pressure and the vertical stress concentration on the column are studied. These soil responses are accurately estimated with closed-form solutions that properly include the radial and plastic strains in the column. However, the surrounding soil does not yield for usual conditions, which reasonably justifies the elastic soil behavior assumed in the analytical solutions. The differences between drained and consolidation analyses are also evaluated. Comparing the numerical results with the closed-form solutions illustrates the implications of the assumptions of each approach. 相似文献

We investigate the origin of the increasing spectra observed at submillimeter wavelengths detected in the flare on 2 November
2003 starting at 17:17 UT. This flare, classified as an X8.3 and 2B event, was simultaneously detected by RHESSI and the Solar
Submillimeter Telescope (SST) at 212 and 405 GHz. Comparison of the time profiles at various wavelengths shows that the submillimeter
emission resembles that of the high-energy X rays observed by RHESSI whereas the microwaves observed by the Owens Valley Solar
Array (OVSA) resemble that of ∼50 keV X rays. Moreover, the centroid position of the submillimeter radiation is seen to originate
within the same flaring loops of the ultraviolet and X-ray sources. Nevertheless, the submillimeter spectra are distinct from
the usual microwave spectra, appearing to be a distinct spectral component with peak frequency in the THz range. Three possibilities
to explain this increasing radio spectra are discussed: (1) gyrosynchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons, (2) bremsstrahlung
from thermal electrons, and (3) gyrosynchrotron emission from the positrons produced by pion or radioactive decay after nuclear
interactions. The latter possibility is ruled out on the grounds that to explain the submillimeter observations requires 3000
to 2×105 more positrons than what is inferred from X-ray and γ-ray observations. It is possible to model the emission as thermal; however, such sources would produce too much flux in the
ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths. Nevertheless we are able to explain both spectral components at microwave and submillimeter
wavelengths by gyrosynchrotron emission from the same population of accelerated electrons that emit hard X rays and γ rays. We find that the same 5×1035 electrons inferred from RHESSI observations are responsible for the compact submillimeter source (0.5 arcsec in radius) in
a region of 4500 G low in the atmosphere, and for the traditional microwave spectral component by a more extended source (50
arcsec) in a 480 G magnetic field located higher up in the loops. The extreme values in magnetic field and source size required
to account for the submillimeter emission can be relaxed if anisotropy and transport of the electrons are taken into account. 相似文献

Air temperature and wind measurements on the surface and in the free atmosphere taken during the total solar eclipse of July 11, 1991, are analyzed. Surface air temperature decreased significantly, 2 to 5 °C in general, with the lowest values occurring 10 to 30 minutes after totality. In some places, surface wind speed decreased gradually during the eclipse, as a result of the decrease of air temperature and temperature gradients. In other places, it increased due to local atmospheric conditions. A radiosonde launched at 13:26 LT (local time) appeared to have been affected by the moon's shadow at about 13 km height. At this altitude temperature was relatively lower than usual and the balloon carrying the radiosonde experienced an upward acceleration. ABSTRACTWe coupled the hydrologic routing and flood dynamics model Terrestrial Hydrology Model with Biogeochemistry (THMB) to the Integrated LAND Surface Model (INLAND) and compared simulations of the discharge and flood extent area against gauge station and satellite-based information in the Amazon Basin. The coupled model represents well the seasonality of the flooding and discharge, but underestimates both of them. This can be related to an already discussed underestimate of the precipitation in the east of the Andes Mountains. A photosynthesis limitation on the flooded area was also included, showing changes in plant productivity and reduction in vegetation carbon stocks. Despite its limitations, the model proves to be a valuable tool for studies of the hydrological cycle and flood dynamics response to climate change projections, allowing it to be used to represent the feedbacks between continental surface water cycle and vegetation. 相似文献

Unlike other lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Lake Vida has a thick (~ 19 m) ice cover sealing a liquid brine body of unusually high salinity (~ 245 g/L) from the atmosphere. To constrain the conditions under which the atypical Lake Vida ice cover formed and evolved, 19 ice samples were collected down to a depth of ~ 14 m, together with three brine samples trapped in the ice at ~ 16 m for analysis of helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon concentrations. The broad pattern of noble gas concentrations for Lake Vida samples is fundamentally different from that of air saturated water (ASW) at 0 °C and an elevation of 340 m for salinities of 0 (ice) and 245 g/L (brine). Overall, ice samples are enriched in He and depleted in Ne with saturation relative to ASW averages of 1.38 and 0.82, respectively, and strongly depleted in Ar, Kr, and Xe with relative saturations of 0.10, 0.06, and 0.05, respectively. By contrast, brine samples are generally depleted in He and Ne (relative saturation averages of 0.33 and 0.27, respectively) but enriched in Ar, Kr, and Xe, with relative saturation averages of 1.45, 3.15, and 8.86, respectively. A three-phase freezing partitioning model generating brine, ice and bubble concentrations for all stable noble gases was tested and compared with our data. Measured brine values are best reproduced for a salinity value of 175 g/L, a pressure of 1.1 atm, and a bubble volume of 20 cm3 kg?1. Sensitivity tests for ice + bubble samples show an ideal fit for bubble volumes of ~ 1–2 cm3 kg?1. Our results show that the conditions under which ice and brine formed and evolved at Lake Vida are significantly different from other ice-covered lakes in the area. Our brine data suggest that Lake Vida may be transitioning from a wet to a dry-based lake, while the ice + bubble data suggest at least partial re-equilibration of residual liquid with the atmosphere as ice forms at the top of Lake Vida ice cover. 相似文献

Bubble coalescence is an important process that strongly affects magmatic degassing. Without coalescence, bubbles remain isolated from one another in the melt, severely limiting gas release. Despite this fact, very little has been done to identify coalescence mechanisms from textures of magmatic rocks or to quantify the dynamics of bubble coalescence in melts. In this paper, we present a systematic study of bubble-coalescence mechanisms and dynamics in natural and experimentally produced bubbly rhyolite magma. We have used a combination of natural observations aided by high-resolution X-ray computed tomography, petrological experiments, and physical models to identify different types of bubble?Cbubble interaction that lead to coalescence on the timescales of magma ascent and eruption. Our observations and calculations suggest that bubbles most efficiently coalesce when inter-bubble melt walls thin by stretching rather than by melt drainage from between converging bubble walls. Orders of magnitude are more rapid than melt drainage, bubble wall stretching produces walls thin enough that inter-bubble pressure gradients may cause the melt wall to dimple, further enhancing coalescence. To put these results into volcanogical context, we have identified magma ascent conditions where each coalescence mechanism should act, and discuss the physical conditions for preserving coalescence structures in natural pumice. The timescales we propose could improve volcanic eruption models, which currently do not account for bubble coalescence. Although we do not address the effect of shear strain on bubble coalescence, the processes discussed here may operate in several different eruption regimes, including vesiculation of lava domes, post-fragmentation frothing of vulcanian bombs, and bubbling of pyroclasts in conduits. 相似文献
