The limiting surface Bowen ratios are calculated which maintain mixed-layer saturation pressure and relative humidity, both with and without boundary-layer entrainment. The equations are formally the same as those of Culf (1994) for equilibrium evaporation, but differ numerically because the coefficients are calculated at the mixed-layer saturation temperature (at the lifting condensation level) rather than at the surface temperature. Devils Hole, in southern Nevada, is a surface collapse into a deep, planar, steeply dipping fault-controlled fissure in Cambrian limestone and dolostone. The collapse intersects the water table about 15 m below land surface and the fissure extends at least 130 m deeper. Below water, most of the fissure is lined with a >30-cm-thick layer of dense maxillary calcite that precipitated continuously from groundwater for >500,000 yr. The thick mammillary calcite coat implies a long history of calcite-supersaturated groundwaters, which, combined with the absence of dissolutional morphologies, suggests that Devils Hole was not formed by karst processes. Devils Hole is located in a region of active extension; its tectonic origin is shown by evidence of spreading of its planar opening along a fault and by the orientation of its opening and others nearby, perpendicular to the northwest-southeast minimum principal stress direction of the region. Most Quaternary tectonic activity in the area, including seismicity and Quaternary faults and fractures, occurs on or parallel to northeast-striking structures. The hydrogeologic implications of this primarily structural origin are that fracture networks and caves opened by extensional tectonism can act as groundwater flowpaths functionally similar to those developed by karst processes and that, during active extension, transmissivity can be maintained despite infilling by mineral precipitation. Such extensional environments can provide conditions favorable for accumulation of deposits preserving long, continuous paleoenvironmental records. The precipitates in Devils Hole store chronologies of flow system water-level fluctuations, hydrochemistry, a half-million-yr proxy paleoclimate record, evidence of Devils Hole's tectonic origin, and probably atmospheric circulation. 相似文献

This paper suggests that the threat to existing property investments was a key reason why funds for development were slow to materialize. By the time the movement gathered pace, the British government became worried by the scale of proposals. Since the consumer boom that followed the expansionary budget of 1988 was short lived, it follows that many potential investors were relieved that they did not become involved with schemes that might have had little economic viability. Nutrient and trace element distributions were determined in the outflow region of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers during high river discharge. This outflow region can be divided into two physiographic areas: the broad, shallow Louisiana Shelf off the Atchafalaya River and the narrow shelf off the Mississippi Delta. The physiographic differences between these two areas lead to observable differences in the chemical distributions. During high discharge conditions, nutrient depletion occurs at lower salinities on the Louisiana Shelf, relative to the delta outflow plume, and significant uptake of nickel and cadmium is apparent in these shelf waters, too. Important factors that appear to connect the physiographic to the chemical include the fate of the fluvial suspended load, rates of mixing, and the extent of productivity supported by recycled nutrients. The results suggest that the Mississippi-Atchafalaya outflow region may provide a natural laboratory for examining the possible effects of sea-level change on the biogeochemistry of estuarine and coastal environments. 相似文献

The Bovedy L-group chondrite contains a light-colored poikilitic lithic fragment with olivine, low-Ca pyroxene and kamacite compositions characteristic of porphyritic chondrules from unequilibrated ordinary chondrites. Its texture, compositional similarities to porphyritic chondrules, and low Na2O, K2O and P2O5 content indicate that the fragment represents a solidified, slightly fractionated impact melt formed from a source that was rich in porphyritic chondrules. The fragment is heterogeneous, with a progressive increase in the bulk ratio and in MgO content of olivines and low-Ca pyroxenes across its length. analyses of the fragment and host indicate that the meteorite experienced extensive degassing due to reheating. The approximate age of 0.5–0.94 Byr dates the reheating event and not the formation of the lithic fragment or the Bovedy breccia. This reheating event renders the fragment's and host's metallographic cooling rate of ~ 5 C/Myr (through 500°C) imprecise. However, the absence of martensite and the presence of kamacite. zoned taenite and tetrataenite in the fragment and host are consistent with such slow cooling through 500°C. This cooling rate must have resulted from burial of the fragment-host assemblage beneath insulating material on the Bovedy parent body. If the thermal diffusivity (κ) of this overburden was approximately comparable to that of the lunar regolith (10?4cm2/sec), then the fragment was buried at a depth ≌ 6.5 km; if K = 10?2 cm2/sec (similar to chondritic material), then the fragment was buried at a depth ?65 km. 相似文献
