Abstract– LaPaz Icefield (LAP) 04581 is a shock‐stage S2 LL5 chondrite that initially consisted of unrecrystallized LL3 material with a moderately abundant fine‐grained porous matrix (on the order of 15 vol%). A rare oblique impact created shearing stresses that produced a petrofabric in the rock, induced frictional melting of troilite (thereby forming a large troilite vein), and caused chondrule flattening. The latter process was facilitated by impact‐induced collapse of matrix pores. Chondrule flattening could not have occurred if the rock had been impacted after it had been metamorphosed to type 5 levels because the fine‐grained matrix would have previously recrystallized and developed low porosity. Ar‐Ar dating of LAP 04581 yields an age of 4175 Ma. This date is long after 26Al had decayed away and most likely reflects the timing of a second impact event that shocked the rock to S4–S5 levels. The troilite vein became polycrystalline at this time and the whole rock was annealed to petrologic type 5, perhaps by being buried beneath hot ejecta of low thermal diffusivity. After annealing, the rock was weakly shocked to S2 levels. LAP 04581 serves as an example of impact‐induced heating being a viable mechanism for chondrite metamorphism. 相似文献

Abstract— Lewis Cliff 85332 (LEW85332) is a highly unequilibrated (type 3.0–3.1) unique carbonaceous chondrite. It resembles CI and “CR” chondrites in its abundance ratios of refractory lithophiles and refractory siderophiles, but differs significantly from these groups in important ways: relative to CI chondrites, LEW85332 has low abundances of Mn, Se, Zn and most volatile siderophiles; relative to “CR” chondrites, LEW85332 has high abundance ratios of Mn and most volatile siderophiles. Although several petrologic characteristics of LEW85332 resemble those of CO chondrites, LEW85332 differs from this group in having lower abundance ratios of refractory lithophiles and higher abundance ratios of common and volatile siderophiles. Chondrules (mean diameter of 170 μm) are smaller than those in CV and CM chondrites and bigger than those in most CO chondrites. Two melilite-rich (Åk 22) fluffy type-A refractory inclusions were observed. Weathering of LEW85332 has resulted in the formation of 6.2 vol.% limonite; 3.9 vol.% metallic Fe-Ni remains. The inferred original metallic Fe-Ni abundance (13–15 wt.%) is very high for a carbonaceous chondrite and is most similar to those of Kainsaz and Colony (both CO3). LEW85332 is a breccia: the one thin section we examined contains (a) ≥ 10 primitive carbonaceous chondrite clasts (with both C1 and C2 affinities) that contain magnetite framboids and platelets, (b) two clasts containing numerous 10-μm-size clusters of troilite grains, and (c) one clast containing small needles of schreibersite embedded in fine-grained silicate matrix. The unique nature of LEW85332 underscores the wide diversity of materials produced in the solar nebula. 相似文献

We report on the detection of H2 as seen in our analysis of twilight observations of the lunar atmosphere observed by the LAMP instrument aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Using a large amount of data collected on the lunar atmosphere between September 2009 and March 2013, we have detected and identified, the presence of H2 in the native lunar atmosphere, for the first time. We derive a surface density for H2 of 1.2 ± 0.4 × 103 cm−3 at 120 K. This is about 10 times smaller than originally predicted, and several times smaller than previous upper limits from the Apollo era data. 相似文献

Despite expanding research activity in gravitational lens modeling, there is no particular software which is considered a standard. Much of the gravitational lens modeling software is written by individual investigators for their own use. Some gravitational lens modeling software is freely available for download but is widely variable with regard to ease of use and quality of documentation. This review of 13 software packages was undertaken to provide a single source of information. Gravitational lens models are classified as parametric models or non-parametric models, and can be further divided into research and educational software. Software used in research includes the GRAVLENS package (with both gravlens and lensmodel), Lenstool, LensPerfect, glafic, PixeLens, SimpLens, Lensview, and GRALE. In this review, GravLensHD, G-Lens, Gravitational Lensing, lens and MOWGLI are categorized as educational programs that are useful for demonstrating various aspects of lensing. Each of the 13 software packages is reviewed with regard to software features (installation, documentation, files provided, etc.) and lensing features (type of model, input data, output data, etc.) as well as a brief review of studies where they have been used. Recent studies have demonstrated the utility of strong gravitational lensing data for mass mapping, and suggest increased use of these techniques in the future. Coupled with the advent of greatly improved imaging, new approaches to modeling of strong gravitational lens systems are needed. This is the first systematic review of strong gravitational lens modeling software, providing investigators with a starting point for future software development to further advance gravitational lens modeling research. 相似文献

Abstract— We derive values for the number and size distributions of meteorites landing on Earth from a study of photographic observations of bright fireballs with the Canadian camera network. The observations cover 11 years from 1974 to 1985. This analysis is an extension of a previous study and represents a 30% increase in the data base. The cumulative plot of numbers vs estimated mass of the largest fragment for each event shows a change in slope near 0.6 kg due to a deficiency of small meteorites surviving from the group of slow fireballs. The change can be explained by a mass dependence of the fraction of the incoming object that survives as the largest fragment. For larger falls, the main mass appears to represent a decreasing fraction of the total mass of the surviving meteorites and estimates of these effects are used to derive the final distribution of both main masses and total masses of meteoritic events. For total masses greater than 1 kg the population index is 1.82, close to previous estimates. About 9 events per year drop at least 1 kg of meteorites in an area of a million square km and the same area receives an annual influx of 54 kg from meteorite events with total masses between 0.01 and 100 kg. There is sufficient confidence in these results that they may be used for comparison of the present flux of meteorites with values inferred for other times, in particular the long accumulation times of the Antarctic meteorite collections. 相似文献

Several aubrites (e.g., LAP 03719, Bishopville, Khor Temiki, ALH 83015) contain orthopyroxene grains that exhibit more‐pronounced shock effects than associated olivine grains. The orthopyroxene grains in these samples have clinoenstatite lamellae on (100) and exhibit weak mosaic extinction, characteristic of shock stage S4; the olivine grains exhibit either sharp optical extinction, characteristic of shock stage S1 (as in LAP 03719), or undulose extinction (shock stage S2), as in Bishopville and ALH 83015. The Khor Temiki regolith breccia contains S1 and S2 olivine grains. Because literature data show that diffusion is much slower in orthopyroxene than in olivine, it seems likely that aubrites experienced postshock, impact‐induced annealing. After differentiation, the aubrite parent asteroid suffered major collisions that caused extensive brecciation of near‐surface materials and damaged orthopyroxene and olivine crystal lattices. As a result of these impact events, some aubrites were shocked and buried within warm ejecta blankets or beneath fallback debris under the crater floor. Entombed olivine crystal lattices healed (and became unstrained, reaching shock stage S1), but orthopyroxene lattices retained their S4‐level shock‐damaged features. Aubrites with S4 orthopyroxene and S2 olivine were probably very weakly shocked again after olivine was annealed to S1. 相似文献

The linearized theory for the parallel propagation of magnetoacoustic-gravity surface waves is developed for an interface of a horizontal magnetic field above a field-free medium. The media either side of the interface are taken to be isothermal. The dispersion relation is obtained for the case of a constant Alfvén speed. In the absence of gravity the interface may support one or two surface modes, determined by the relative temperatures and magnetism of the two media. The effect of gravity on the modes is examined and dispersion diagrams and eigenfunctions are given. In the usual - k
x diagnostic diagram, the domain of evanescence is shown to be divided into two distinct regions determining whether a given mode will have a decaying or growing vertical velocity component. In the absence of a magnetic field the transcendental dispersion relation may be rewritten as a polynomial. This polynomial possesses two acceptable solutions only one of which may exist in any given circumstances (depending on the ratio of the densities). If the gas density within the field exceeds that in the field-free medium, then the f-mode may propagate. The f-mode exists in a restricted band of horizontal wavenumber and only when the field-free medium is warmer than the magnetic atmosphere. An analytical form for the wave speed of the f-mode is obtained for small values of the Alfvén speed. It is shown that the f-mode is related to the fast magnetoacoustic surface wave, merging into that mode at short wavelengths. 相似文献

The EH and EL enstatite chondrites are the most reduced chondrite groups, having formed in nebular regions where the gas may
have had high C/O and/or pH2/pH2O ratios. Enstatite chondrites (particularly EH) have higher CI- and Mg-normalized abundances of halogens (especially F and
Cl) and nitrogen than ordinary chondrites and most groups of carbonaceous chondrites. Even relative to CI chondrites, EH and
EL chondrites are enriched in F. We have found that literature values for the halogen abundance ratios in EH and EL chondrites
are strongly correlated with the electronegativities of the individual halogens. We suggest that the most reactive halogens
were the most efficient at forming compounds (e.g., halides) that were incorporated into EH-chondrite precursor materials.
It seems plausible that, under the more-oxidizing conditions pertaining to the other chondrite groups, a larger fraction of
the halogens remained in the gas. Nitrogen may have been incorporated into the enstatite chondrites as simple nitrides that
did not condense under the more-oxidizing conditions in the regions where other chondrite groups formed. Literature data show
that unequilibrated enstatite chondrites have light bulk N (δ 15N ≈ −20‰) compared to most ordinary (−5 to +20‰) and carbonaceous (+20 to +190‰) chondrites; this may reflect the contribution
in enstatite chondrites of nitride condensates with δ15 N values close to the proposed nebular mean (~−400‰). In contrast, N in carbonaceous chondrites is mainly contained within
15N-rich organic matter. The major carrier of N in ordinary chondrites is unknown. 相似文献

The long time photometric observations were carried out for eight asteroids: (122) Gerda, (153) Hilda, (190) Ismene, (221) Eos, (411) Xanthe, (679) Pax, (700) Auravictrix, (787) Moskva. New rotation periods have been determined for the asteroids (153) Hilda (5.959 h) and (411) Xanthe (11.408 h), and known rotation periods for some of the others have been confirmed. The known close approach of Asteroid (99942) Apophis in April 2029 provides the opportunity for the case study of a potentially hazardous asteroid in advance of its encounter. The visible to near-infrared (0.55 to 2.45 μm) reflectance spectrum of Apophis is compared and modeled with respect to the spectral and mineralogical characteristics of likely meteorite analogs. Apophis is found to be an Sq-class asteroid that most closely resembles LL ordinary chondrite meteorites in terms of spectral characteristics and interpreted olivine and pyroxene abundances, although we cannot rule out some degree of partial melting. A meteorite analog allows some estimates and conjectures of Apophis' possible range of physical properties such as the grain density and micro-porosity of its constituent material. Composition and size similarities of Apophis with (25143) Itokawa suggest a total porosity of 40% as a “current best guess” for Apophis. Applying these parameters to Apophis yields a mass estimate of 2×1010 kg with a corresponding energy estimate of 375 Mt for its potential hazard. Substantial unknowns, most notably the total porosity, allow uncertainties in these mass and energy estimates to be as large as factors of two or three. 相似文献
